Um. Am I the only one to notice that this laptop from Dell is actually BIGGER than the current MacBook line?

Taking an average thickness of 1.1in for the Dell, I'm getting 129.25 cu.in.
A macbook measures in at 123.11 cu.in.

Sure, the 1-pound difference is notable, but it's not an earth-shattering design. If Apple were to make a macbook in a carbon-fiber casing and called it an ultraportable just because it's 1 pound lighter, I'd be disappointed.
However, it would be a nice addition to the MacBook line. It could replace the black model (and justify the premium price for it!)

Dear MacRumors please can we stick to news about Apple products.
If this continues then this forum will become seriously diluted and full of opposing fanboys flaming each other.
We surley cannot talk about every product that emerges from every competitor to Apple....even if they are somewhat similar.
Mahalo.

It's not just that they are similar, but that these are the specs that people have been looking for... and here they are. With Apple's switch to Intel architecture, it means that there is no real reason that these specs can't be apple's specs in the near future.

I think of particular note is the commercial feasibility of the LED-backlit display which always seemed a bit farther off than rumors would suggest.

just checked that out: amazing price. it is sad how the apple books and all pro models are prices competitively in the pro arena, but the non-pro stuff aka macbook is somewhat overpriced. it is as if apple is charging extra for the old combo drive, the skimpy 512mb ram, the lack of extra ports and of course, the big 950 gma.

no sense does it make

The stock price of the XPSM1210 isn't really "amazing", even with the discounts they were doing to clear them out to make way for the replacement.

I don't see how the MacBook is overpriced compared to a stock XPSM1210 (which, despite having a smaller screen, is still pretty thick compared to a MacBook).

And the XPSM1210's I've used at the Dell kiosk had pretty terrible keyboards and pretty crappy screens too.

The XPSM1210 only gets interesting when you do beef up the specs and add a GeForce 7400, but at that point it costs close to $2000.

Nice specs and options, but as usual Dell F**k*d up with the design.

That thing looks like a bootleg VAIO case with Dell hash marks. Apple will put out a better designed book. If not... then start the whining. :D

By the way... hardware is fluff without the software to back it up... and Vista is crap.... now Ubuntu... hmmm...maybe.

That's how I understood it - 0.87 inches thick on the front edge and 1.33 on the back edge. A bit deceiving, I think. Nevertheless, nice specs!

If the MBPs are updated tmmw, expect a ridiculously puny update. If not, expect a more major one in a week.

They are not going to do a minor update this week and a major update next week. That idea is simply foolish

The D630 starts at 4.47 lbs.

Hrm. 4.37, says Dell's site (but: you're right, I stand corrected).

The 420 seems to be the only ultralight option at this point, at 3 lbs. On the other hand, it might be more accurate to claim that Dell's trying to shave some weight off the mid-range, rather than make more powerful (albeit heavier) light laptops.

if dell has brought an amazing laptop, imagine how our apple's wait will be worth !!!!!!!

Whats the big deal. The article said they've "got the scoop on some early marketing materials." EARLY MARKETING MATERIALS! You can't buy this today. You can't buy this tomorrow. Who knows when you will be able to get your hands on one. You don't even know what it will cost you when it does materialize.

Apple is using the best chipset and the best CPU available at this time in their portables. I can understand the complaints about the GPU but that doesn't matter to most users.

In my opinion, Dell knows that Apple is going to introduce a spec very similar to this very soon and they wanted to beat them to the punch so these "marketing materials" were leaked.

That is what I'm thinking as well... Hopefully they will have something almost as iPhone-riffic for the MBP's this month. This week? WWDC?? Who the heck knows. And it's only one week anyway...

Ummmm....
Apple MacBook: 5.1 lbs.
Apple MacBook Pro: 5.6 lbs.

How is 4.0 lbs heavy? Bloated compared to what a piece of paper?

Compared to the 3 lb laptop they already sell, a 2.8 lb laptop from Sony, a 2.1 lb laptop from Toshiba, etc.

Apples to Dells

I'm sure Macs will be released with similar specs soon. Probably cost a bit more, but then again, you get what you pay for, especially considering what the Macs come preinstalled with ... unless you're all about the Minesweeper.

Chill out everyone, Apple won't dissapoint.

.

My wife has a Dell Inspiron 6000 whatever. Crap-o-la!!!

Plastic case design. If it fell it would be lake dropping a Lego spaceship. Cuh-rashhhhhhhh!!!!

All I can say is if you want to spend over 2 hours on the phone with 3 different tech people based in India for a stupid $15 replacement part, then go ahead my friend and buy a Dell.

AppleCare alone is worth whatever a Mac costs.:) :) :)

I really don't see that as a big improvement over the MB. OK it has the 8400 GPU and an LED backlit display but really: 4lbs vs 5lbs, 2.4 C2D vs 2.13 C2D. Come on.

The big improvement is Dell's warranty. Onsite repair and accidental damage coverage vs. Send it into Apple or have the Apple store keep your system for 3+ days and Apple reps laughing at you.
