I'm not sure what is going to be released but I think a tapered edge on the front of the laptop, near the trackpad would be a good idea.

I'm a student and when typing assignments, the edge of my mb digs into my wrist leaving a 'dent', apart from not being good for wrist, the squareness is a bit boring.

ideas anyone?

I like the idea of a matte black back with a glossy black apple, and a outline of light around it.

My car has aluminum trim mainly around the center console and part of the arm rest. It dents (they are tiny, but there are a few) and scratches easily....I don't know if there is a more sturdy type, but I can't see it holding up to use on the outside/shell of a laptop. I do think it would look nice though.

Actually the I've been working with and aluminium powerbook G4 for 4 long years and it looks like new, no scratches at all, it is incredibly resilient. It does have a dent, I dropped it on a marble floor! But it survived and nothing was damaged to my surprise.

Same here... it doesn't dent when you drop it, it just bends:)

13" Aluminum MacBook Pictured on Invitation?

BoingBoing post in 9to5mac claims that, the macbooks will be made of plastic and not aluminum...seems they have come to this conclusion considerin the Macbook in the invitation...

But heres my interpretation...

Jus have a look at the spotlight frm the top-right corner. Its tryin to lighten the top corner of the macbook... So, Considering spot light is a white one, the bright side of the laptop looks like the Aluminum... coz, if it where a black plastic, it wudnt get lit like a grey aluminum moreever, and the reflection from it will be sharp... but here the reflection looks smooth... So it primarily suggests that macbook wud be made of Aluminum, and the color of the macbook in the invitation is not Black...

LOL, I'll be upgrading from my 2000 PII 433Mhz

Yes, you read that right. I've been hogging my wife's laptop since she got it last year. Hell, my Touch is faster than that thing.

I upgraded from iMac 266 G3 to my MacBook Black (2006). Needless to say, whichever model you buy I think you will appreciate it!

Looks like a current-gen MBP to me...

Has Apple ever shown a new product in an invitation before? Granted, it's just a metal slab with an :apple: in the middle, but it looks just like a current-gen MBP.

Ugh, I hope they don't make it a black plastic-aluminum hybrid. It will look like my HP dv9000 that I'm replacing. Seems very un-:apple:, design-wise.

talk about smoke and mirrors :D

Fingers crossed for price drop and refresh on the 14th! I'm in the market for a new laptop and would like to go Macbook with Dual Boot/Parallels with Vista, but if the 14th turns out to be nothing and the refresh is happening sometime in the future", I'll be getting a PC laptop.:(

Apple, just one 12" version please. I would kill for a new 12" laptop.

Well, maybe not. But something drastic, I can assure you.

having used a 12" LG laptop and a 13" MacBook for a year I can say this, 13" is way way better for almost everything you would use the laptop for. Both at same resolution, 12" is really not very comfortable at all when used extensively. 13" is really not much bigger either.

If I had to buy another laptop, which I probably will in the 14th, it will be 13" and definately nothing smaller. I have my iPhone (which I am using to write this post) for that light use.

the apple logo on the back of my touch isn't 1.5" wide... what i mean is that if apple was to release a netbook i doubt they would keep their logo that size...

^^^ Yeah, that.

More aluminum, I can't wait!

I love crappy Wifi! In my house, I simply adore how my PowerBook's signal it gets off of my router is terribly slow, while my MacBooks is blazing fast, while my PowerBook is a room away from the router.

The Wifi reception is aluminum products if so extremely amazing that at work where I use a MacBook Pro, it can't keep a signal and when it has one, it lasts for five minutes or so and moves terribly slow, meanwhile my MacBook can pick up the same signal from the same location, faster than I can at home!

Ethernet is so much better anyway, after all, Apple always cares about the environment, eliminating all of those "useless" cables is crazy talk, very clearly they believe that they are perfect to use and mobility is for losers.

[/sarcasm]

I hope to God in the next MacBooks Apple fixes the Wifi issues (which I doubt) otherwise my next computer in three years or so may not be one.

It's not been an issue for a long time. Apple solved it with the MBP by moving the WiFi antenna to the screen hinge which isn't covered by aluminium.

At my parents place (1920's building with thick brick walls) there's a couple of bad spots in the house. I get a better WiFi signal on my MBP than with any other laptop with an internal antenna.

Where did the iSight go?

So, seems that the general consensus is that the picture on the invite is a 13ish inch MacBook in aluminum...

...Which makes the height / width ratio a bit out in comparison with the current MacBook line. It seems to have lost almost 2cm off the height.

The ratio (around .665 width/height) is considerable less than the current MacBook (.698), or either the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros (.681 and .676 respectively).

Are Apple cutting out the iSight? Or have they built it into the screen itself, something they have been working on for a while now?

Only four days until we know for sure...

Please for the love of all that is holy let there be a BLACK ALUMINUM!!! I never want to buy silver again.

Does anyone expect an increase in battery life for the MacBook, at all? I guess the consumption will go down if they use those oleds screens, but how about the Nvidia story?

Who here wants to wager that "The Spotlight Turns to Notebooks" is really just some new Spotlight feature that pulls up search related content from the "cloud" (like GENIUS) that they are adding to notebooks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????? Think about it.... why would the light be shining from THAT corner??

I actually believe this, because if all 3 of Apple's notebooks are Aluminium then they will look too similar. Apple needs a way to distinguish between them.

Those pictures are not anything like what Apple would design or sell. Why would they so suddenly change their design language? If you like this then go buy a HP.

Also - Plastic is so much weaker and vulnerable to scratching, denting, cracking. We just heard that Apple is going to be cutting their new cases from aluminium blocks - not plastic (though I am still to be convinced that this is true)

Any new MacBook is going to be a cross between the current model and the MBA. Maybe a slightly curved edge, more rounded, the black keyboard etc. And thinner.
