I know that most of the higher end NVIDIA desktop cards are able to use the Mercury Playback Engine for CS5 tasks that can benefit from GPU acceleration, and I was puzzled why Apple went with the Radeon 5870 for last year's MacPro.

Is this true to some extent for the top tier NVIDIA mobile cards as well, or are they on equal footing with AMD mobile cards for CS5?

When the Arrandales came out, they were only online at first. Then 3 days later stores had them and 2 days after that BB got them. Just going by past history with the Arrandales.

Damn. I was planning on driving over to my local best buy that sells macs to get one. It's like an hour drive and I don't want to waste 2 hours of my day if they don't even have the new ones.

light usage

So my fiance has converted me from a PC user to drooling over the MBPs. Then I see new ones are on the verge, awesome! But I'm left being a little uninformed.

I'm not a power user, but I do a little bit of light graphic design, photoshop, that kind of thing. I only want a 13" for portability (and price) but I'm disappointed that the quads aren't going to be in the 13". Think that might be an option? Or considering my light - moderate usage, would quad be overkill for me anway?

Thanks so much!

You know, lots of goobers will probably argue, but considering what the price difference will likely be, you will be fine with a 13" if you are legitimately light user. HOWEVER, i wouldn't get less than the lower end 15" myself if I were you.

I just noticed that theirs only 2 versions of the 15inch macbook pro.. Theirs usually 3... Could this mean a slight price reduction..

I plan on going to bestbuy to return my macbook pro that i bought last week.. I do think that the Bestbuy store will have them for 2 reasons.. The first.. When I went last week.. I got the last Macbook they had in stock.. And also, from a picture that they had earlier this week, showing a cart of new macbooks at a BestBuy store..

What exactly you will use lightpeak for??? There is "zero" products out there. HDDs are not fast enough to fully take advantage of the bandwidth, so what is left?

Me too. When I said something to wife about these new MBP's coming out and I was really wanting to upgrade to one, she said why you already have one!
She just doesn't get it....<grins>

Just tell her that the new facebook won't work on the old macbook. :)

The ol' ball and chain gets off work in a bit, so we'll probably grab breakfast and stop by Best Buy when they open. She's gonna be PISSED if she has to listen to me talk about the new MBP's another couple days!

I just hope the Apple store comes back up before then, so I can at least see if I even want to go by or simply go ahead and BTO.

Nope your wrong. The very FIRST day that the arrandales came out, I went to go to my local Galleria and I exchanged my core 2 duo 15" mbp for a high end 17" i7 2.66GHz MBP.

I'm guessing the same thing can be said about today. Looks like I'm headed to the Apple store around late this afternoon again. :D

my mom doesnt get it either, i'd still be using a PC with worse specs than the iPhone 4 if it were up to her and a video tape recorder instead of blu ray

Well if that's the case, I guess my Best Buy in NYC should have them.

Performance bump aside, there's nothing terribly exciting about this upgrade. Maybe Thunderbolt will amount to something, but how many devices are available now?

I called 3 apple stores in NC and none of them had stock initially. I guess it depends.

The 6490m is slower than the 330m in last gen's gpu, concessions had to be made for the quad core processor. IIRC the dual core arrandale's from last year's model uses 35 watts, the quad core uses 45 watt's. The 330m uses 24 watts, I don't know how much the 6490m uses but it is almost certainly 5 watts or more.

Also the 2.0 ghz guad core shown is almost certainly the low or mid end 15 incher. The high end 15" might have a 6750m like the 17".

You're wrong too. I upgraded my non-unibody from the stock 5400RPM to a 7200RPM and now the fans can't be heard until 3000RPM. It is much louder. All drives vary, but common sense tells you that the faster it spins the more noise it gives off. I returned the WD 7.2k for a Seagate 7.2k and it's quieter than the WD, but still louder than the stock Fujitsu 5.4k.

Most people are not bothered by such subtle sound differences, but people like me and a few others on here notice it quite boldly.

I'm talking about the Apple's BTO one. I don't care how noisy it is with an aftermarket drive. I have an Apple computer with a 7200 rpm drive that makes no sound AT ALL. My previous one is noisier than this one and it had a 5400 rpm drive.
