Yep - how about a price cut across the board???

Well, how is it carrying around a 17" MacBook anyways? I know people that purchased 17" Windows Laptops (that would be $900 17" laptops ;)) and they all returned them for 15" ones...

I'm 6ft, non-small (not fat, but not exactly lean ;) ) with a big lap and a very large briefcase that I carry a ton of crap in anyway. For me weight and size isn't really an issue, but I can certainly see where it could be for others, my wife refuses to give up her 12' iBook G4, and doesn't want to replace her 17 inch iMac because the "20 inch is too big." Go figure.

Just the quick math and it's not a lot of money [for me]. Currently it's costing me $0.50/hour to use my computer and every hour, every day that goes by that amount goes down. If I plan on keeping the new one for three years it drops to about $0.25/hour which to me seems pretty good considering I will be working on a great machine.

Not to mention that have a 17" with more power will probably increase productivity by 10-20% at least so it will pay for itself in a few months. :)

..

Apple products are WAY too expensive. I remember reading in an older thread that Steve Jobs wants nothing less than something like a 28% margin on all products. I don't mind companies making a little profit, but 28 freaking % ?!?!? If I were him, I'd go with a 5-10% profit margin. That way, Apple can have a little extra money for growth, plus they'd get a few more sales since it won't be so expensive. WHat they lose on margin, they'd probably make up for in volume. Which then means higher market share.

Yet without taking your approach Jobs and his top management have some how managed to become very wealthy and build a company that has cash reserves equal to Microsoft and no debt.

There is a bigger lesson here, sometimes the more rewarding approach to running a business is to forgo being the market share leader, and develop products that delight yourself and your customers, that create insanely loyal followers who share your set of values and design sensibilities. Apple has never been about being the market share or price leader, they have been about creating products people desire.

The actual frustration I read here is not that the new MBP 17 is not desirable, it is that people do not have the disposable income to purchase it.

Great, thanks Apple, for a new $3000 laptop in today's economy...

I've got considerable lust for one of these machines. I have no idea why. It's completely impractical for me. Looking forward to pictures and fondling one at the Apple store :).

Not every country in the world is suffering. Apple has customers worldwide.

Which countries are not suffering? I'd like to think about relocating.

Why don't you complain about the profit Starbucks makes? 500%? 900%?

So much profit they just announced 300 store closures. I'm worried about the havoc all these caffeine addicts going through withdrawal symptoms will cause.

Folgers contains the exact same amount of caffeine and is available at any grocery store. If you're really hard up (and you want it to taste like **** similar to starbucks coffee) you can just eat the grounds with a spoon.

So why is mine not coming until March?
Is it simply a demand issue?

Anyway, it's my first post – howdy, and please be gentle :p

*snip*

But maybe those of us that prefer matte option aren't such a majority.

Finally, someone gets it...

Oh, and I'm just off skiing for a week. Hopefully, by the time I return, some of you will have your machines and mine may even be sitting in stores, waiting for me. Peace out, dudes!

I can accept Apple's prices on computers, however the amount of stuff that is disappearing from the package is disturbing. Used to be you got a screen adapter and a remote. now these will set you back an extra $40. Apple is make a bit too much in profit here as is and yet is still leaving out accessories that cost them a dollar to make.

Soon Apple will be charging for the power cord as well...

They probably did a survey and realized only 10% of the people used either one of those so it's better for everything to not give them to the other 90%. I've never used either one of those so if they included them with ever computer it would just be waste.

Apple is overpriced. They know how to make profit!
Lets see how well they go when the US economy continues its long downward spiral this year (which will be much worse than last year). Either Apple will make their computers completely elite (and lose the power of selling to masses) or they will make them much cheaper, but something will be cut - thats in the short term though. What happens in long term is even more interesting. Next 5 years will be amazing, and it will fascinating to see what happens to Apple.

Why use the analogy of Ferrari's vs Fords? Apple is not a Ferrari - its running at the same speed as anything else if not even slower in some respects. The only ferrari attribute they have is their industrial design.

Apple can't make a cheap product. They make high quality gear.

One thing I've noticed in this down market (that and Apple's BIGGEST EVER QUARTER) is that people are spending more discriminately. They're looking for quality and value for money rather than just absolute bottom-line cheap.

People are getting smarter with their money, not just stingier.

Everyone is trying to compare a mabook pro 17" to a cheap Dell or HP. They are after different markets, if you're in the market for a cheap computer you're not going to be looking at Apple. If you want a nice computer Apple still sells a create macbook for under $1000 which to me is pretty affordable. 95% of computer users could get away with this computer just fine.

To to dell.com and thinkpad.com and price out a computer with the same specs as the 17" macbook pro and check the price. :D
