I said that as a blanket statement, but what I meant was someone of his talent level...

Maybe I'm just not giving Keenum enough credit? I don't consider his talent (and leadership) level to be nearly as high as those three.

That's very true. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Hopefully he can come back if he wants to. Injury is a sad way to end your career.

It's not, but the fact that (at least) 3 of the top 30 picks from last year's draft missed a big chunk of their final season with injury means that it's not nearly as impossible as you made it seem.

Colt McCoy is another player you can add to that list, an he is someone less talented (though from a far more successful program) than Keenum who still got drafted despite being injured in his last game and had to prove to NFL scouts that he was over said injury before the draft.

Keenum redshirted in 2006, so he would need to apply for a medical hardship to get that sixth year, but I would imagine he would rather jump to the NFL than try to come back unless his draft prospects look really dim.

Former UT-Austin wide receiver Jordan Shipley is a recent example of a player who got six years of eligibility, so it's not unheard of for the NCAA to grant it. But then again, Shipley missed two seasons with injury, not just part of one, so it's a little more unique. And, of course, UH doesn't have the clout UT-A does...

That's kind of what I was saying. Most of the cases I have heard of have been through multiple injuries. It's very rare for someone to have a regular redshirt and a medical redshirt. I also think Keenum will try out for the NFL draft rather than come back. As starved for QBs as the NFL is, someone will pick him up. As I watched him pick us apart last year, I could see he is a good QB. The question, of course, is if it is because of the system or his talent.

Probably a little of both. I think he's better than his predecessor, who is a middle-of-the-road NFL starter. Or at least he was until Michael Vick reminded everyone what he could do while Kolb was injured.

Meh, I think he's a tad overrated as an NFL caliber talent. Saw him up close and personal during the Armed Forces Bowl last January at TCU's stadium and Air Force's secondary made him look average at best. Granted he may have grown over the Spring, etc but overall just mediocre.

A LOT of the success is based on the system rather than his talent level. See Timmy Chang from Hawaii, Graham Harrell from Texas Tech, and Chase Daniel's from Mizzou from a few years back. All of which lit up scoreboards but did not translate into NFL caliber talent. Although Chase is currently Drew Brees' backup in New Orleans.

SEC is probably still the best...

But...

Ohio State
Nebraska
Wisconsin
Iowa
Penn State
Michigan
Michigan State

All in top 25. The bad thing is that we're going to beat each other up, making an undefeated champion that much more unlikely.

Hey Boise State, wanna come play with the big boys? I know I don't want to play you, but would you really want to play with us? Really? My guess is you wouldn't like 5 and 6 loss seasons.

Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State and Michigan are all VERY overrated. Michigan State is riding an incredible high after needing a fake FG to beat a very mediocre Notre Dame team, so I feel pretty comfortable saying that they are overrated, as well. Last time I checked, Nebraska was still playing in the Big 12 for another year, so it's a little cheeky to include them in a "Big 10 is great" post, don't you think? Ohio State, however, looks very good this year. We'll see how they fare against an SEC team in a bowl game, but so far they do look better than they have recently, for sure.

Wow, you read my mind.

Look, Michigan's defense is downright terrible. It was no fluke that UMass scored that many points on them. Penn State's offense isn't very good and they have a true freshman QB. He may have a lot of talent, but some things only come with experience. Arizona showed that Iowa is overrated. They embarrassed their offensive line, especially on the last Iowa drive. And Arizona isn't even the best team in the Pac10. Honestly, I haven't seen enough of Wisconsin and Michigan State to have an opinion.

Of course, the SEC isn't in much better shape. While Alabama is far and away the best team in the conference, it goes downhill from there. Florida is shaky, Tennessee and Georgia are down this year. LSU and South Carolina are undefeated, but I'm not sold on them. Had we not gift wrapped 5 turnovers to LSU, we very well could have beaten them. We outgained them on offense. With all that said, I still think Bama is the best team in the country. I really hope Saban gets bored and decides to try the NFL again. :)

We must have one heckofa non-conference schedule in this little fantasy world of yours, because those 5-6 losses certainly wouldn't be coming from that sorry bunch!

The only team I'll give you is Ohio State, but I'm certainly not going to roll over and say we couldn't beat them. Nebraska? As has been pointed out, they're not in the Big 10 yet, but I'm still confident that we could beat them.

As for the rest of those.... riiiiight....

Keep dreamin, ya Hater! ;)

I'm not suggesting all of those particular teams would beat Boise State, but that the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, etc... have a lot of good teams, and they tend to beat up on each other. Even a mediocre big conference team will beat you up when they lose a game.

I certainly wouldn't want my team to play Boise State, they look incredibly talented. That being said, they do play a lot of cream puffs, and I think it's hard to really compare them to teams that play a lot of very good teams.

I'd love to see Boise State kick butt in another bowl game, but even when they do, how does that translate to a comparison to other teams? I'm really not "hating" on Boise State, I'm just questioning how they would do in a conference where week in and week out they play high quality teams.

As for the Big 10, yes, I know there are some teams that are over-rated, and there are some teams that have a lot of problems, but that doesn't change the fact that they are still good teams, and more likely to win than many other teams ranked below them.

(edit) Oh, and Nebraska is not in the Big 10 this year, but after they join, the schedules look brutal.

Apparently the paint was paid for by an "anonymous donor"... That's a lot of money for paint!

Here's an article about it from our local paper.

A local DJ named Big J unintentionally made everyone pee from laughing today when he said this on the air:

Pete: In a story that has been gaining steam, it seems Oregon State has painted one of their practice fields blue to help acclimate their players to the blue field. When told about it, Coach Pete said, "I guess we have them where we want them if they're painting their field blue."

Big J: Yeah! And it doesn't matter anyway, because come Saturday the field is going to be painted RED with BEAVER BLOOD!

It took everyone a couple of minutes to compose themselves enough to keep going. I was laughing so hard I could barely see the road through my tears! ...partly because I was laughing at them laughing, but it's still hilarious! And disgusting.

It looks like the Big 12(10) will be starting its nine-game conference schedule next year with the official departures of both Nebraska and Colorado at the end of this school year (there was talk that CU would not start Pac-12 play until 2012). With NU paying $9.255M and CU paying $6.863M to leave, it's hard to figure out how Big 12 commissioner is going to come up with the $20M per season he promised Texas A&M to keep them from bolting for the SEC.

I think this is going to get much nastier in the coming months and I give the new Big 12 two years, maximum, before it dissolves.

I think it's good riddance at this point. The ten teams that remain don't make a very compelling stand alone conference, IMO.

I heard one analyst say that if the Big 12 does dissolve that he could see Texas becoming an independent like Notre Dame. They certainly have the TV draw power to do it, but I'm just not sure I see that happening.

It's certainly possibly that they've been positioning themselves to do just that. They are starting up their own TV network and have scheduled BYU and ND in football for the years immediately following the end of the current Big 12 TV deal (which will most likely be the end of the Big 12 itself).

I agree that it's a bit of a longshot, but any time you have the sort of clout they have right now, it's possible. If you think about what UT-Austin athletic director DeLoss Dodds has said in the past, it speaks volumes about this very thing...

"We don't keep up with the Jones," Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds once famously said. "We are the Joneses."

As athletic director DeLoss Dodds so succinctly summed it up the other day, "We didn't start this, but if we need to finish it, we'll finish it."

Ugh. I can not stand Texas' pompous attitude...

I don't blame you. I just hope you can separate the attitude of the program from that of the fans. Or at least some of the fans. I bet it's pretty brutal if you're in Texas. I'm sure IgnatiusTheKing knows all about it. :p

We were pretty crappy while I was in college. Mention UCLA and I get the shivers.
