Probably wishful thinking. He hasn't coached in college or recruited in 20 years. If he does get hired, he's going to find out very quickly that the college game is dramatically different than the NFL. 2011 will be an eye-opening experience (for reference, see Mike Sherman's 2008 A&M team or Bill Callahan's 2004 Nebraska team).

Even Nick Saban went 6-6 his first year at Bama, including a loss to UL-Monroe.

And its their past glory that still keeps them in the recruiting game. Miami runs a pro style offense, and still is one of the best schools in the country, in terms of getting their players ready for the NFL. They are two years removed from the #1 recruiting class in the nation, had a solid class last year, and have some high ranking recruits for next season. Talent hasnt been an issue the past couple of seasons, coaching has. They have good relationships with most of the top high schools in the county, and a Gruden hire would be extremely beneficial for recruiting, which is just as important as coaching in CFB. And IIRC, Gruden is a pretty good coach as well.

And this is why I don't think they will try to get Mullen. He is a dedicated spread guy. And I don't put much stock in recruiting rankings. Texas has a roster full of 4 and 5 star recruits, and we see what happened this year. The same thing happened at Florida. I also would be shocked if Gruden went back into the college ranks. The transition from NFL to college isn't always successful. For every Pete Carroll, you get someone like Bill Callahan. The jury is still out on Mike Sherman.

I wonder if Tommy Tuberville would be interested in the Miami job. He has said that is his dream job, and I bet he is kicking himself for not taking it when they hired Shannon. I wonder if he would leave Texas Tech after one year to take the Miami job. I know one poster around here who would be happy if that happened. :)

5 LSU
6 Stanford
7 Wisconsin (BIG 10)
8 Ohio State (BIG 10)
9 Oklahoma State
10 Michigan State (BIG 10)

what a TERRible football conference :p

so we're smart, we don't cheat and we can play :D

Double yaaawnnn! The top 10 is littered with SEC and Big 12 teams too big deal. How's about a stat that actually matters? Check out the Big 10's bowl record for most of the past decade:

2003: 3-5
2004: 3-3
2005: 3-4
2006: 2-5
2007: 3-5
2008: 1-6
2008: 4-3

Mediocre much.? :)
Regardless, the facts will speak for themselves come 01/01/2011. TCU will be giving Wisconsin all they can handle. ;)

Wow, I knew the Big11 had been pretty bad in bowl games, but I had no idea it was that bad.

In other news, it seems there is some truth behind that Jon Gruden to Miami rumor. Check out this story from the Miami Sun-Sentinel that says Gruden contacted Miami expressing his interest in the job.

TCU is headed to the Big East. Announcement expected today at noon Central time. Another blow to Boise in what has turned into a disastrous weekend for the Broncos.

That’s quite a stretch to say they’re “East.” They might as well change the name of the conference.

Yeah but they're not "Mountain" either.

Just saw this too and man does this leave me conflicted. A part of me was hoping for a MWC automatic BCS birth with Nevada and Boise coming on board; also was wishing the Big12 would finally try and invite TCU with all the changes. We'll see if the rumors hold up on this one... :(

TCU finished their season last Saturday with the scrimmage vs. New Mexico. Unless something fishy happens in Corvallis or Auburn gets lit up by South Carolina they are going bowling at the Rose Bowl vs. the Badgers.

I was really hoping for a TCU-OSU Rose Bowl, but it doesn't look likely now.

As for TCU to the Big East, I think it's the best thing for them right now. The Little X won't be expanding anytime soon (and will probably be dissolving after the 2012-13 sports year anyway) and the MWC's shot at an auto-berth was as good as dead when Utah and BYU split.

problem I see with that is I do not think the other Big 12 schools want Texas to get any more power. It already has 4 schools in it and it is not like they want to hit 5 or more.

And Nick Saban said he wasnt going to coach the Tide. This happens all the time. I wont believe it until the Canes introduce their next head coach. Hocutt said he wont speak of the matter or answer questions until the decision is revealed, so nobody will know anything until it happens. There are also articles saying that Gruden initiated the interest by calling Hocutt, and that a deal was nearly made last night, with a 2pm press conference scheduled today, which obviously didnt happen. I still think he is very much in the mix, and from what I have read/heard, money is not an issue. The Hurricanes have already done the research on what kind of economical impact Gruden would have with the Canes.

I'm not saying they should be number one, they should be number 3 or 4 at the absolute lowest. TCU just doesnt deserve their ranking playing weak nancy teams :p

Dang bro still no love for TCU eh?! :)
Let me try and win you over with some perspective and my purely empirical logic. TCU deserves to be the #3 team in the nation for the following reasons:

*They are undefeated...[undefeated regular season two years in a row]. Every team ahead of them is also undefeated and everyone in their rear view has at least one loss, considering this is still Division-I football going undefeated should count for something. Respect will suffice. :D

*"Quality" wins [applying the term loosely] include Oregon State [then ranked #24], Utah [then ranked #5], Baylor [then undefeated and picked to upset TCU by 'experts' week 3], SDSU [only two losses each by 3 points or less when they faced TCU]

*TCU leads the nation in many defensive categories and in the top 5 for offense.

*Secondary nugget on an unrelated note. Nevada beating Boise is not that far off the mark if you look at their historical trend. That same Nevada team beat Cal 52-31, which in turn nearly beat #1 Oregon and held them to their lowest point total of the season

In short they are well coached, play well, and can take the field with any team from any conference and give them a good game. Let me be frank and say this....I'm a Frog Fan at heart but also a realist. As long as Oregon and Auburn stay undefeated TCU does not, repeating, DOES NOT deserve to play for the BCS Championship over either of those schools. For now, they are right where they deserve to be at #3. ;)

I don't consider any of these wins higher quality than what the badgers did, n=and they scored over 70 points 3 times

*TCU leads the nation in many defensive categories and in the top 5 for offense. again, because they played nancy teams

*Secondary nugget on an unrelated note. Nevada beating Boise is not that far off the mark if you look at their historical trend. That same Nevada team beat Cal 52-31, which in turn nearly beat #1 Oregon and held them to their lowest point total of the season stretchingggggg

It's too bad, since I had a great idea for the Big 12. They could invite, I dunno, TCU and Houston, and rename it to the Southwest conference. Oh, wait... :)

I really don't understand this TCU to the Big East thing. Other than football, they don't bring much to the Big East. Even then, I don't know how much they bring. And there aren't any really compelling rivals.

Anyway, is evilgEEk harassing BSU kicker Kyle Brotzman? This is sad.

(Just kidding, EG! :))
