Didn't say it wouldn't happen
Just said it is surprising
Not the direction I would have anticipated

Oh, I wasn't trying to correct you or say that you were doubting it. Just posting that as additional info as I got it coming through on Twitter. I agree that it's not a direction I saw coming, but then again Muschamp would be an idiot to wait until Brown's contract is up in...what...2016 or something?

That's a great move for him! I don't think Mack Brown is going anywhere soon - might as well jump to where the big money is. I think he'll be a good coach for Florida.

Wow, that hire came out of left field. Either Foley is good at faking out everybody, or they some big names turn them down. He said their search was going to take two weeks because their top guy was on a team in a bowl. He said they wanted a proven coach and comes up with this. That takes a lot of guts for a big name program to hire a coordinator with head coaching experience.

So, who becomes the "coach in waiting" (I hate that term) for Texas now? And the offensive coordinator? And the offensive line coach?

They need proof first.

So many people are so eager to pronounce him guilty, but so far, the proof isn't there.
Bush held on to it for a few years before giving it back so who knows. His talent on the field he deserves the award I don't think there is argument there but who knows what the future holds.

I'd be more curious about what is going on in that program. Mass firing (uh, "retiring/resigning") of assistants rarely turns on well. It usually just leads to the head coach being gone soon afterward.

Yeah, it doesn't look good. I think we'll be in rebuilding mode soon enough. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Mack Brown better hope he isn't rebuilding long. Another losing season or even a 6 or so win season will probably find him with a Bobby Bowden style retirement.

From Cam Newton's speech: "My parents do a lot of things behind the scenes that go unnoticed." Yeah, Cam, and a couple to went VERY noticed.

Could be. I've stopped trying to figure out what the magical ingredients for success are. A lot of it seems to be a crapshoot (remember what people initially thought of Auburn's Gene Chizik hire?). I've been pretty spoiled - I can deal with sucktitude for awhile. :p

I think the longhorns will actually be better off in the long run. I don't know that they'll be able to get anyone better (muschamp is a damned good coach) but it really seemed like there was a lot of infighting going on this year when things started to go south. Brown is still relatively young and doesn't need a "head coach in waiting" lurking around making everyone second guess him.

But I'll gladly accept suckitude for a while, too.

We will see how good the Chizik hire was with Newton gone. Without Newton, Auburn was a 7-5 or 6-6 team at best. Much like Florida without Tebow this year.

The Heisman has become merely a media event over the years with little meaning whatsoever, and the Bush incident took even more away from it. This year has shown it to be irrelevant to me. Honestly, Bush and Newton winning the Heisman has about as much appeal to me as Bonds home run record. And as far as evidence and proof is concerned, I don't need to look past the OJ verdict to see how that works.

You can look at Texas as a team in disarray or with real opportunity. They have a chance to make a real overhaul now, on both sides of the ball. What Mack Brown does with these hires will likely make the difference for the rest of his time with the Longhorns.

The Muschamp hire is surprising. I think he is a good coach and his value would never be higher than now, in fact, I think this season took a little bit off his resume and he knew it. Hot coaches and hot assistants have a window to work through, and with Texas' season, it was time to jump. If the suffered next year too, Muschamp would have suffered. As far as Florida is concerned, this will be interesting. A defensive coach at an offensive school. He has the energy and passion, no doubt. It will be fun to watch him mature as a head coach now. I still hate the Gators, but Muschamp is a Dawg and will always be a Dawg.

And in other news, WTF is up with Miami LOL?!?
So much for big time program and big time coach and big time contract
:p

Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt met with Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman in North Carolina on Saturday to discuss the Hurricanes' current vacancy, the Miami Herald reported Saturday.

Trestman, a graduate of Miami's law school, was an offensive assistant at the school from 1981 to 1984.

The Herald reported that Hocutt was expected to meet with Temple coach Al Golden on Saturday, as well. Golden was in Philadelphia for the team banquet Saturday afternoon.

So which is it Urban? Family or health?

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Urban Meyer is walking away from Florida because of health concerns, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Meyer has a recurring burning sensation in his chest that doctors told him last week would raise cardiovascular risk factors if he continued to coach, the person told The Associated Press Sunday on condition of anonymity because Meyer's health issues are confidential.

It's like that video I posted a while back with all the Auburn so-called fans booing him at the airport. I bet those same idiots are proudly wearing their Auburn shirts and bragging now. We'll see how good a coach he is after Newton is gone next year, and especially if Malzahn takes a head coaching job.

Like I said, we'll see how good he is post-Newton next year, especially if Malzahn is gone as well. I've long believed most head coaches are only as good as their assistants. If Brown chooses...wisely with these hires, I think they will be ok. If not, I think he gets the Bobby Bowden treatment, although that may be a bit harder now with no coach in waiting.

As for the Heisman, it's a popularity contests. I do have to say, though, that I believe Newton was the best player on the field this year. Some of the stuff he did was amazing. He has a rare combination of running and passing ability.

And you are a lot nicer than some Georgia people I have been reading online. Backstabber and traitor come up a lot. :)

Nah, I think it is a great opportunity for Muschamp, and I am glad for him. Not sure how much success he will have, he is somewhat of an unknown quantity. When the Gator's hired Spurrier, he had made Duke a winner... DUKE! And Urban Meyer had success at Bowling Green and Utah. Zook on the other hand... not so much. He had never been a Head Coach either.

So the question is... who do they get in Muschamp?

I would have rather seen him take a lesser stage and be successful as a Head Coach and move up as he grew. The expectations would have been more easily managed. The year Spurrier quit, the Gators were 10-2 and second in the nation. The fans were saying "hope we bounce back next year". It is going to be hard to start your Head Coaching career at the pinnacle. He will be expected to win the SEC and the BCS Championship every year. And if he doesn't, he will be tossed aside like Zook after going 8-5, 8-5 and 7-4. He has climbed Mt. Everest in his first climb. He has no where to go now but down.

It is a little bitter-sweet, cause I hate the Gators, but I like Muschamp.

Reminds me of the story about Vince Dooley after he won the National Championship in '80. He was an Auburn grad and they came calling wanting him and Erk Russell was ready to take the UGA job. It is reported that Dooley was ready to jump when his son (Derek, the Vols coach??) came to his Dad crying saying, "but Dad, we hate Auburn". It was only then that Dooley truly realized he was no longer a Tiger, but a Dawg at heart.

AFAIK, he's got another year left at Auburn. Given that a lockout of the NFL next year is still up in the air, it seems unlikely that he'll try to go pro early if there's not a pro to which to go.

The better question is how good he will be when his offensive line graduates next spring.

I think he turned pro when he went to Auburn ;)

I would be surprised if he stays, especially with the investigation continuing
I will not be surprised if the infamous "more information" strips both Auburn and Newton

With a Heisman and a BCS Championship (possibly), what motivation does he have to stay? And with the looming NCAA sanctions and the possibility of injury... I doubt Cecil will want to risk his investment.

And if he is innocent, then he has every reason to stay.

Don't be so quick to dismiss him as guilty. Let's see some solid evidence first.

well with everything that has come out about Newton he has tons of reasons to be guilty. He cheated at flordia. The Mississippi thing and I am willing to bet many others. Aulburn is going down that much is known the question is when.

Solid evidence like his dad admitting he pimped him out? The NCAA actually overruled their rules by ruling Newton eligible already, so we know this whole thing is a sham.

Besides that, you've got to be a complete moron to think that Newton demanded money from one school but went to another for free.

No...everyone knows that Newton's and Auburn's 2010 seasons will be erased in due course. Only an institution as corrupt as the NCAA would allow this mockery to go forward (simply because of the money) knowing they're going to wipe it all out eventually.
