Legends and Leaders to stay through 2011

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany made some surprising comments last month to WGN Radio in Chicago about the league's new division names, Legends and Leaders.

Delany sounded a little defeated following the public outcry about the names and said the league would "probably revisit it after the first of the year."

These words elevated hopes for change.

But the real surprise would have been the Big Ten scrapping the names just weeks after revealing them.

League officials confirmed Thursday that Legends and Leaders will remain through the 2011 season, although the evaluation process Delany referenced last month will continue.

I'm not surprised by this one bit. The Big Ten isn't the type of league to dump something new just because the first reaction isn't positive.

"We can't test them until we play a season," Big Ten chief communications officer Diane Dietz told me today. "We have to see them through."

The Big Ten will continue to conduct market research and evaluate the response to the divisions both during and after the 2011 season. Perhaps we could see a change if the outcry remains, but I doubt it.

I hate to break it to you, but division names really aren't all that important. It's much more important which teams are in what divisions.

Although I don't like the Big Ten's selections, the league's real mistake was trying to make the division names announcement such a big deal, especially during a time (mid December) when no games are being played. The league paid a price with the backlash, but I'd expect the focus to shift to more important topics going forward.

The bad news... the Legends and Leaders titles really are lame

The good news... nobody really cares because the Big 10/12 is really lame
:p

Looks like A&M dodged a bullet yesterday. Our defensive coordinator, Tim DeRuyter, interviewed for the Tulsa head coaching job, but it looks like he was beaten out by Arkansas OC Garrick McGee. That's pretty huge for us (if it comes to pass that way) because, while our improvement this year was beyond dramatic on the defensive side of the ball, there's still a lot of work to be done. As evidenced by the Cotton Bowl, there's a huge drop off between our starters and our backups, and another year under TD can only help rectify that.

On another note, I went to a dinner last night where the keynote speaker was Jackie Sherrill. He made some interesting comments (of course), but perhaps the most interesting thing he said all night was near the beginning, when he told us unequivocally that:

-A&M and a few other teams will end up in the SEC in the next couple of years
-there will be a split in Division 1, where 64-72 teams split off to form four super conferences and the rest merge with the FCS.
-the BCS will add the Cotton Bowl to the rotation and create a plus-one playoff

While they're just predictions, Sherrill is still really keyed in and connected, so it's not like it's just some Joe blow spouting off. To the partisan Aggie crowd, it was music to our ears (well, those of us who weren't 75+ and longing for the old SWC days).

I think there will definitely be more changes in the works
How it all shakes out is anybody's guess at this point
As strong as the SEC and Big 10 brands are though, it will be hard to strip them of their identity and autonomy

And some people love blindly no matter the evidence. Tebow was the #1 QB recruit coming out of high school and the first person Urban Meyer talked to when he took the job at FU. No one tells that kind of player that he a) can't get a D-1 scholarship b) can't win a Heisman trophy and c) can't win a national championship. In fact, everyone tells that kind of player the exact opposite.

Really? I am the ignorant one huh?

Tebow didn't even play QB in HS until his Junior Year...He was told by the first school he went to that he was a MLB and they didn't want him at QB. So he transferred to Nease where the coach let him play QB. He was then while being recruited always by critics said to be only a scrambler and would never be able to be a functional QB in the SEC.

Even after a stellar freshmen campaign at UF it was highly doubted he would ever been as good as Chris Leak..Yes..Chris Leak!

The fans knew he would be good because if you paid attention, he always threw in games great with limited chances. I really feel Urban was saving him to bombard him on the SEC in 2007 like he did.

Even after a performance like no one in CFB has seen his true sophmore year, thousands of people said he wasn't good enough, wasn't a good passer, and should not win the Heisman. Mind you this was after playing a Top 5 SOS schedule on a team that lost 27 seniors and 3 early to transfers. He still managed to put up 55 TD's and outscored alone many of Floridas rivals entire team...He was also the first QB ever to run for 20+ TD's and pass for 20+ TD's in a season.

In 2008, all the media hyped on was how he is good but cant lead his team to victories, kindly leaving out the fact the team was playing 20 some freshmen in the two deep and had 10 players starting who had never started before. The loss to Miss State came, then the promise, and then the utter destruction of the rest of CFB ensued..At least this killed the myth he couldn't lead his team to victory after two of the most impressive performances on big stages I have ever seen in leading a comeback in the SEC Championship game against Alabama, and then Oklahoma in the National Title Game. This accomplished something that has never been done in CFB history, a team beating the #1 ranked team in the country in two straight weeks.

In 2009, he merely had another great year stat and record wise, but lost to Bama, and then went out to destroy Cincy in the Sugar Bowl for a "lackluster" 13-1 season.

So in 4 years at UF, he was

13-1
9-4
13-1
13-1

48-7...not to shabby..He was also a part of the winningest class in SEC history.

At the end of his CFB career, he had more rushing TD's than Hershel Walker, more passing TD's than Peyton Manning...Just think about that..

Here are the other accomplishments he had while at UF...

SEC All-Freshman Team[111]

Sorry, but that is about as impressive as a resume as one can have...And after all of that, he still got **** on and bashed for 4-6 months before the draft saying they don't know if he is good enough for the NFL and would never be taken in the first round...

After he is taken in the first round, "they" say he will never play for 2-3 years and will be nothing but an H-back if he does play...Well imagine that, he is starting by the end of the year, and even manages to win NFL Rookie of the Week TWICE during this season in which he would be useless. While amassing a humble record so far in the NFL, he led a great 17 point comeback against the Texans in which he played nearly flawless the fourth quarter and ran in the game winning touchdown with a minute and a half left...

Yea, the kid has had it easy and was never doubted his entire life...

Exactly. He was a 5-Star recruit who was promised championships and individual awards in college. He lived up to it but is now trying to portray himself as an underdog. He may be that now but he wasn't that at any point previously. The commercial is total BS.

How was he promised anything? He has been told for years he would fail at everything he has done.....

1) They lost to Ole Miss that year. AKA University of Mississippi or That School Up North if you are Dan Mullen :), NOT Mississippi State. Yes, they are completely different schools and we do, in fact, have more than one university in the state. Florida lost to Mississippi State THIS year. In the Swamp. Just a friendly reminder. :)

2) In case you missed it the first time I posted it, here is Tebow's Scout.com recruiting profile. #3 rated QB in the country and a 5 star recruit.

And you can put me in the "Tired of hearing about Tebow" group.

Oh look, other rational souls, like Yahoo's Tom Dienhart and ESPN's Doug Gottlieb, agree with me...

@DanWetzel: In commerical Tebow claims he was told he'd never scholarship, Heisman, etc. Umm, he was a 5-star recruit http://tinyurl.com/4cpv2h5

@DanWetzel: Tebows Rivals profile: No. 1 QB, chose UF over Bama, USC. Yep, no one believed in him http://tinyurl.com/4cpv2h5

@GottliebShow: @DanWetzel Teebow has also said he went through adversity, like when Dr's told his mom not to have him? How is that adversity? U r in a womb

Yeah, that's old news now
Came out Saturday before the deadline

Both Houston and Green were expected to leave, so no surprises there
Both should be high draft picks, not that we used them to their potential :(

Fine. See if I report anything again. Ungrateful little....

I was moving all weekend, so I was way out of the loop. We got to move these refrigerators, we got move these color TVs.

Anyway, I saw this article on the rule change next year that will take touchdowns off the board for excessive celebration. Lame! Yeah, let's let the refs decide if the TD stays on the board or not. It's like what happened to K-State in the bowl game, only instead of moving back the conversion try for a lame penalty, they wipe the TD off the board completely.

Reminds me of how the Dawgs were robbed in the LSU game 2 years ago
Worst penalty call I have ever seen
