We live in twenty-first century.
Today is new, in 1 month is something we learn on history's books at school.
400 days in informatic's world is a generation.
Especially when you ask 1168 euro to 1800 euro for an imac.

that C64 boxed in my grandma's attic is prehistoric (it loads programs in 5 minutes or so from tapes.) that has prehistoric functions. I can load programs in less than a second on 2011 iMac and connect Thunderbolt devices to it. far from prehistoric.

you know there was this time, back in 2009 when Apple released Mac mini after almost 600 days of no update. guess what? it looked exactly like the 2007 model! omg, shocker, one wonders how they can still sell computers, right? RIGHT? it was so prehistoric with it's Core2Duo processor and dedicated (mobile) GPU. it also shipped with this ancient operating system called Leopard.

It was crazy times...

(it can run Mountain Lion, the latest operating system. I know because I own one.)

I think most people would agree with you. I think it's just that NOBODY wants to pay full price for older tech when there is a possibility that a new iMac with newer tech that WON'T be MORE EXPENSIVE will soon be released.

In saying that, gawd I hope it's sooner rather than later. My Parents in Law need a new computer and I told them I'll give them my iMac as I'll get the new one. I don't want them to waste money on a computer when they can have mine for free. BUt there is no way I'm paying full price for a 2011 iMac. That is nothing short of throwing money away.

So, are you suggesting that Apple and others move to a monthly new release schedule?

My C64 loads programs in seconds thanks to the '1541 Ultimate'. The C64 is a big deal for many people who make music.

Yeah I do believe but apart from chiptune scene/demo scene it doesn't have any real world uses. But I must say I absolutely love C64, such a capable machine at the time (I got it pretty late, around 89/90).

This is probably old news but I didn't know there was any speculation regarding GPU for new iMacs. Wondered if those old benchmarks are really the deal:

Please provide links to the "more concrete discussions about an upcoming iMac in 2013" than in 2012.
Apple never gave any forewarning about new releases, the only notable exception being the Mac Pro that is scheduled to be released in 2013.

As for the iMacs on stage, you say the were 2011 iMacs and not new ones, which incidentally nobody has seen and may very well share the same form factor.
Would you really be able to distinguish a 2010 iMac from a 2011 iMac from the distance in a small video? The 2009, 2010 and 2011 iMacs share the same case, so it's pretty much impossible to tell them apart just by looking at them (especially from the side in a video.)

What is it that you need in a 2012 iMac?

USB3? a retina screen? no optical drive?

The ivy b cpu won't be much better;

top of the line iMac would have an i7 3770s vs an 2600s.

My guess for the problem of why the machine has don't dropped to sell is this;

top of the line would have to use a gtx 680m

apple made a switch to nvidia and as far as I have found the 680m is the best nvidia mobile gpu

my guess is nvidia fff'd up and promised a better gpu to apple for the iMac across the line and now they have failed to deliver.

if you think about this it has happened to apple nvidia screwed up a few years ago and they had a falling out.

to me this is a sticking point for apple and the 2012 imac. it may be that nvidia can't build enough gpus for apple

this is the TOL hd7970m

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4298982 score is 7258

________________________________________________________________________

Here is the TOL 680m

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/3940464 score is 8456

Here is the 675m

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4437365 score is 3604

the 670m

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/3294535 score is 3450

lastly the 650m
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/3300303 score 2263

The problem is only the 680m is really good so all imacs would need it or suffer with less power for graphics then the 2011 models .

_-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I left out the scores for the 660m as there may be an error on 3dmarks site. The 660m's score was over 11000.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the current top end imac has this gpu 6970m here is its score.

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/1213795 5692

so a 2012 imac needs the i7 3770s cpu over the i7 2600s cpu for 5 to 10% improvement

and it needs the gtx 680m gpu over the hd6970 gpu for a solid jump of about 50% 8456 vs 5692.

So basically if they don't put in gtx 680m's the graphics will fall off a lot.

since apple made the switch back to nvidia the graphics could be the problem. BTW the rMacbook pro has the 650m and it is really not a good graphics card. if you go on a retina macbook and start the screen in motion it struggles a lot.

Does anyone have still energy to persuade other forum members why we want 2012 iMacs? I mean most of us have pretty good grasp of computers and have good reason to wait for updated iMacs.

I need USB3 in my machine. Don't tell me USB2/FW800 is enough for me, I have good reason to choosing USB3 over other buses (including TB).

What I don't understand is those who keep trying to persuade everyone that the 2011 iMac is good enough. There's a reason why we are here nagging about the new model...because we don't want to settle with old hardware. I'm not trying to persuades anyone to do the same. In fact I don't mind those buying the current. I just know I would not feel comfortable buying 500+ days old hardware knowing something new is on the horizon.

The annoying thing right now is that the iPhone is eating up every news blog around. No one has time to write anything about the iMac right now. It's frustrating. The tiny news about stock shortage and digitimes info from the assembly line at least held me warm while waiting. Now there's nada, nothing, zip...it's just frustrating. I wish I could fast forward through October so I could go back to my life without macrumors again... With or without a new iMac.

Amen.

I bought a $500 mac mini to tide me over... It runs great - doesn't have what I want, but it puts an image on a screen and responds to user input :)

It will do until the new iMac comes out.

You both seem to share the delusion that there is some form of bandwidth limitation on rumours. The iPhone is news, but just because it's getting a lot of coverage doesn't mean that iMac rumours would not be reported. The reason we're not seeing iMac rumours is not because of the iPhone, it's because there are no rumours to be reported.

wrong, because when there's no news to report of anything, rumor sites seems to barf up stuff like "shortage of imacs" and other news that probably doesnt mean anything, but at least they help me stay optimistic. Now there's no point for anyone writing the same BS until this iphone s.hit-storm is over.

lol i dont care if they talk about other crap besides the iphone i just want something other than the iphone because we already know everything that needs to be known what else do you want from iphone? its been overkill and all the rumors sites are keep wacking off to the iphone thats all, we need to move on to other stories, i dont care what those are as long as they are not iphone stories because they are just pushing it now. I do know something for sure whether you want to believe it or not, other stories are getting overshadowed by the iphone pointless stories.

Was thinking about that too. I recently got tempted by a very good offer, the mid model with GPU/8 gig RAM/SSD + few month warranty left for the price of base mini. Skipped on it to see what October brings.

This is my first post here on MacRumors. I sold my mac pro 2008 a few months ago to buy a new Imac 2012. Bummer no new Imac yet. last weekend is decided i really need a new Imac so i went to the local Apple reseller and asked the question, buy a Imac 2011 or wait?
The guy told me, there is NO Imac coming this year, so if you really need a new Apple computer get an Imac 2011. So i said oke, but what if.....

Then the guy surprised me, he said ok, if there's a new Imac showing up in 2012 you can return your 2011 model and switch it for the 2012 version, he said, i can do this because i am sure there is no Imac coming this year.

So i bought an 2011 Imac with a written note in case......

Dunno how sure this guy is but im not confident about a 2012 model any-more.

Doesn't really help if you need something with a bit of power. I all ready have a maxed out 2009 iMac. The reason why I wait isn't just because I hope something cool is coming or because the current is too expensive for its specs...it's simply because its not powerful enough, even maxed out. I'm always it a search for a machine were all my tasks will go as knife in warm butter. And I don't have to use boot camp when needing windows, because the machine performs well enough with an emulator using 3d software and games (such as parallels) . I guess a maxed out MP could do the job, but the price tag for a Maxed out MP is just a big joke - it's such a bloated price I do t even have words for it... So not a very good option either

Do you work for the "get rid of the trash" department at apple?

Dude, first of all learn to quote. To answer your question: yes, USB 3 is the main reason for me to need a 2012 iMac. And I don't care if "IB won't be much better than SB" or any of the GPU blabber because I'm coming from a 2006 iMac so even a 2010 iMac would be incredibly faster than what I have. The reason I'm holding off buying an iMac is that the 2011 iMac cost €1158 when it came out in May 2011 and guess what? It still costs €1158. It'd be a very stupid purchase at this stage for me. For others it may be just what they need.

I wish, then i would probably own the new 2012/2013 proto type.

Funny how some official apple store employees recommend customers to hold of while others do the opposite. From what I understand this was a reseller store, not even an apple store. This guy knows less than nothing probably... We are more educated than him. Funny how such a guy can think he's so sure... You should ask to get it written on paper and then buy the iMac. Guess he will be pissed when you come back 4 weeks later.
