It's more about prestige and showboating than any crude economic calculation. There's also the regenerative aspect, given that most of the Olympics is taking place within one of the most deprived boroughs in the UK. The Commonwealth Games was quite a success in regenerating what was, in all honesty, a pretty awful part of east Manchester. I hear about how it's going a lot because my mums family all come from or live in that area. Although it takes decades to properly assess the success of such schemes, all the signs indicate its working.

Our bid logo was better than the official end result. The colours are correct and the "ribbons" form the rough shape of the Thames as it flows through London connecting the Logo to the City.
