It's more about prestige and showboating than any crude economic calculation. There's also the regenerative aspect, given that most of the Olympics is taking place within one of the most deprived boroughs in the UK. The Commonwealth Games was quite a success in regenerating what was, in all honesty, a pretty awful part of east Manchester. I hear about how it's going a lot because my mums family all come from or live in that area. Although it takes decades to properly assess the success of such schemes, all the signs indicate its working.

I considered that but I don't believe it's worth the billions going into it.
I'm all for improving such areas but I think it's quite amusing that they're trying to cover the cost with that excuse; I'd rather see the money poured into projects such as regeneration directly.

it does look better (not that hard to do though), but the accompanying BS is from the same stock.
and why can't you use the torch? Atlanta and Albertville did.

I heard on the news a while back here the IOC has a new rule regarding the use of the torch...

looking at that video, it looks so cheesy and lame. looks like it came straight out of sesame street 1980's edition. also a bit of a cheesy alien invasion/techology skit, does it give them powers?

how about incorporating parts of london and putting big ben on it or something? and some of the british mr crowds probably have better than me since they live there.

olympic committee: 1980's called, it wants it's logo design back.

"We've had a huge reaction to the launch of the new logo - most of it negative"

So let's hope they listen up.

Now I understand why Seb Coe didn't want to talk about it during yesterdays episode of 'Inside Sport'.

Truly hideous.

LOL! WTFfzors! There were the alternatives? I thought the official one was bad enough. Did they assign these logos to be made by 5th graders in study hall? It hurts! 😀

And what's this crap? It gave me a good laugh.

They were made by BBC website readers. 😉

Link.

Unfortunately they've removed the most amusing one, but is still captured for posterity on Boingboing (Not work safe link if your boss has a knowledge of disgusting internet phenomena).

I'd pick the userones over the "official one"

The first one is pretty nice.

Our bid logo was better than the official end result. The colours are correct and the "ribbons" form the rough shape of the Thames as it flows through London connecting the Logo to the City.

ribbons = shape of the Thames - that's cool!

Interesting how instead a random placement of triangles are "fine and dandy"...

I tried fixing the original one. Did it help? Nope. Nope. Nope.
