This is Apple we're talking about here. They don't give hardware away for free, and why would they reduce the cost of hardware when the market has clearly demonstrated a willingness to pay the current prices? People view the services costs as separate from the hardware costs. Nobody is going to say "Gee, I really like the look of the Apple streaming service, but I did just pay $1000 for my iPhone. I'll go with DirecTV Now instead just to spread the wealth."
Think about it for a second. Services are high margin.

When you think about how Apple views average revenue per user and services, I think you’ll understand why Apple would give away a box that costs them $60 in exchange for a customer that is willing to pay $40/month, year after year after year.

What's the difference to the average Joe? Why do I care about OLED over LCD?

Just the contrast. For example the HDR content on OLED in dark room is a sight the no LCD currently in existence can even come close to.

Other than that, there is no much difference. In fact, during the daylight hours, the difference in contrast between the LCD and OLED is barely noticeable.

The high margins from iPhone X helped carry Apple through the previous quarters. But when you look at growth of the iPhone in terms of units, it's starting to plateau. What worked for the past 12 months doesn't mean it will work for the next 24.

Look at the way iPad grew during 2010-2014 then completely stumbled. As @PickUrPoison mentioned, there's a fine point between max revenue and growth.

I would grab 2 new unlocked SE's immediately along with 2 new updated mini's if they come out. All my devices are now off apple care. Haven't upgraded specifically because Apple isn't selling what I want. Lot's of people are looking to buy, but Apple just wont see the tree's from the forest.
If there’s sufficient demand, Apple will be only to happy to sell it. Sufficient can be a pretty large quantity, however.

I do think the iPad mini (and Mac mini, for that matter) will be updated, but they don’t sell enough to be updated yearly. Only larger iPhone, larger iPad, MacBook Pro, iMac and Apple Watch are updated yearly.

The new X+ MIGHT be worth $999, let’s hope. I had my eyes on the X until it was released at that price point, and I simply didn’t think it commanded that price point with what it offered.

The original iPhone was what, $600? And people were freaking gasping and oohing when Steve Jobs showed how easy it was to control with your finger. I miss exciting iPhone releases.

Steve Jobs was known to change his mind often, no one can say for sure that he wouldn’t be doing the same (obviously that’s if the rumour is true).

We will have to see what Apple announce, it’s only about a month away now.

I wonder if Samsung will worry tho if Apple do decide to do a stylus since their sales are already not very good, does Apple want to launch a bigger blow or do they just not care, it’s interesting to see what happens.
This is probably very far-fetched.... Personally, I do not see that happening this year atleast with the "inbuilt" Pencil support. Maybe the pencil will be supported for a select few apps... if nothing more.

Will Samsung Worry, may be not... As they have a good following of users of the note series and the functionality provided, I am not sure Apple would release (like the Dex support where connecting to a display will make it a working computer).

Now wheres that guy who kept crying on about why Samsung was stupid to have a stylus on their phones?

Now the best thing since sliced bread.
That's not the way it works. If Apple came up with it first, then they get credit for implementing it first. If it's not that great, they pass it off as a "version 1". If someone else comes up with it, Apple just claims they'll do it better. Hence, Apple is infalliable ;)

Nah if Apple came up with it first it would be like the AirPods “Your gonna lose it!!!” “Why would they not put a cord between it and the phone?”

I thought Steve Jobs (may he Rest In Peace)did not like the idea that phones should not have a pencil?
No, he didn’t like the idea that phones would require a pencil. Instead, he thought they should be usable with just your finger. So that’s what Apple brought to market with iPhone, and iPad soon thereafter.

699 wouldn’t be surprising if it’s essentially replacing the spot that the iPhone 8 Plus (and previously 7 Plus) occupied.

Nah, Apple increased the starting price of the iPhone 8 with $50 relative to the 7 just for the introduction of wireless charging and specbump. This update is at least worth $50 start price increase.

For me personally, even 256 GB storage has been a waste. With the 2 TB iCloud storage, shared between my wife and I, and optimized storage enabled, I’m currently only utilizing <38/256 GB of storage on the device.
512 GB seems totally unnecessary, to me.
That would be a whole lot to lose anyway if you dropped/lost/broke your device with that much stored locally.
to be honest, regardless of the memory size, having regular backups are necessary. These are electronic devices, they do not call and wait for it to die to the user... Just saying...

Hope not, as according to the interwebs the Note Line in the past was not a top seller for Samsung.
If Apple enters the stylus market for phones, it might be game over for the Note and one less ingenious commercial for Samsung.
Just entering the market with a stylus does nothing to the competition. Iff apple does walk through this rumor, it will be a couple iterations before it can even reach the capabilities of what Notes can offer. And yes, the price point... Lets not go there, plastic stylus... $99, Metalic stylus, $169, leather stylus, $199.

Glad I got the 8. I think i will hold onto that awhile, dont love the price or look of the new. A fill sized version of the 4 would be amazing.

I'm kind of interested to see what next model brings. a cheaper "X" with most of the same features and functionality, but at a lower price point intrigues me.

if they do manage to do it and make it reasonably full featured, it'll get some serious consideration. I would really love an iPhone SE-X (I can't think of a better way to identify it, despite the letters). the 5s (SE) design to me is stlll pinnacle smartphone for look and feel. I just love the way it looked. Throw in there a 4.5" edge to edge bezelles display... I'd even consider walking down off my Anti-Notch and Anti-headphone jack removal hill I was willing to die on.

Apple is big on carrying around things to make other things work (dongles and hubs needed for their single port-type devices). You think they'd think twice about having to carry a stylus around? Not to mention, if they removed the headphone jack to make room for more battery, you think they'd take up space for a stylus inside?
A case that can hold a shrunk down pencil.

If one doesn't know (and doesn't care to do a search to learn), buy based upon other features. Some people claim they can't even readily SEE a difference between LCD and OLED. If so, score one for the cheaper LCD model. Consider what else it doesn't have vs. the more expensive models and then choose wisely.

Having not used any iPhone outdoors beyond the 5s which I find unusable (unreadable) outdoors even at max brightness, does that mean the OLEDs are still difficult to read/use outdoors on sunny days, generally?

The 4" SE continues to be my preferred phone. I'd take a larger screen if the overall phone size did not change much. Whenever I use my gf's iPhone 7, I find it just slightly too big for comfort. She's always choosing my phone to play games, and the smaller screen size is a completely non-issue for her. Apple, please have the wisdom to keep the SE form factor, but with upgraded internals.

Is it just me or does it seem like this is the most unexciting release to date. I'm more interested in the iPad and Apple Watch. Another year, another iPhone. Bleh...

Yah, it must become hard for Apple to keep building excitement when they are iterating the same products year after year. At least in the earlier iMac days and the iPod days, they had fun designing new devices every year or so. These days, things barely change with the hardware. Do they feel they've reached perfection with the hardware design, and now they can only innovate on the software side?

OLEDs have improved in that category in the past several years. iPhone X is not difficult to read in sunlight. Note 8 is good too.

Those are the two phones I have seen personally. They say Note 9's screen is even brighter.

The thing is that OLEDs need dark environment in order to display that "perfect" black to show you the infinite contrast.

The AMOLED on my Apple Watch Series 3 (is it different to the iPhone X OLED?) is easy to read outside in bright sunlight. I work outside so it’s something I notice. Far better than the LCD in my iPhone 7 which is a bit rubbish in bright sunlight.
