Hmmm.... competitors increased market share by offering higher performance, features, and a lower price, while Apple’s sales were lower than expected.

Really???

Who could’ve seen that coming??? Oh, yeah... everyone outside Apple headquarters.

The question is... how much money did they have to pay for that market analysis?
Lower than who expected? I would take making most of the profits in an entire market over market share any day. Anything else is like getting congratulated for work 60 hours a week but being paid a tenth of another employee who works 20 hours a week.

iPhone X is probably a hair bigger then the 4.7" iPhone if we are comparing body sizes.
And believe me, if Apple saw people had interest on the small display iPhones they would have made one.

People were, and are, interested in the iPad Mini, yet they do not bother to update it for years and are slowly killing it.
It was the best iPad ever, period.
If the same size, Apple Pencil supported, device would be released, it would fly off the shelves like crazy. Almost everybody I know, wants new iPad mini, or, at least, Apple version of Note

Edit: spelling errors fixed :)

lol, iPhone supporting a stylus was Steve Job's biggest nightmare. I hope this is fully just a rumor because all this means is Apple is concerned about products like the Samsung Note and given credence to the useless case of a phone needing pen input support. Touch and Pen support on a MacBook makes far more sense then bringing Pencil support to the iPhone.

Steve Jobs has been dead since 2011, times change. The iPhone X Plus for this year is rumoured to have a 6.5" display, the biggest Apple has ever put into an iPhone, we are not talking about 4" screen size anymore for the iPhone. Steve Job's had a point back in 2007 but it's now 2018!

The replacement for the X is in a weird spot pricewise. Cheaper than the X I have, but doesn't really offer a compelling reason to upgrade. More than anything, just makes you feel like a bit of a sucker for adopting the new model early.
Don’t feel like a sucker. I think it’s the market. People just weren’t willing to pay as much as you were willing to pay.

I’m sorry but why is guessing by unnamed “industry analysts” news? This doesn’t even appear to be based on supply chain rumors. Just pure guessss and speculation and the silly “lower than expected sales”. Whose expectations? Apple doesn’t tell us their sales forecasts. Wall Street forecasts are meaningless.

What universe are you living in? Apple's sales grew. Apple's revenue grew strongly because a good number of iPhone 8 sales went to the iPhone X. At the same time, Samsung is dropping like a stone. And where did you see Samsung having lower prices?

Jobs is no longer here, step into the ‘00s.
Jobs said what was to him appropriate for the time.
The styluses of that era where dumb plastic sticks.
Greater advances in technology make for smoother writing experience on modern touch screen devices.

You shouldn’t worry about it. If it comes to pass, just don’t use it.

A lot of posters here on MR vehemently disagree with you.

Seeing how many people on here (myself my included) simply want an updated SE, I think it’s inevitable...tho I’d be shocked if it happens in September. Four new phones revealed? I don’t think so. We’ll probably see it in March of next year.

I agree about the iPad mini. Still using mini 4 myself but will have to upgrade to pro eventually. iPad mini is a great size tablet to take with you everywhere. But I still believe they did not sell to well, otherwise I don't understand why Apple would just stop making it!!

Who the heck needs 512 gigs of storage in their phone? Like seriously. I’m having issues filling up 60 gigs on my 256 gb phone. And I have plenty of apps photos and my whole music library downloaded.

Ok, that's me then who can't download their whole music library on a 256 GB phone. (not that I _want_ to do that, but it wouldn't fit).

I would love to have a smaller Apple Pencil to go along with the iPhone Xs. But please Apple make it so the pencil works throughout the whole OS. Not just in coloring or drawing apps. I want to use the pencil instead of my finger to navigate through through the menus and all of IOS on my phone.

Let’s hazard a guess.
People whose use case differs from yours.
People who live in areas where cloud service is not practical or cost effective.
In general, people who are not you.

There does seem to be a whole lot of narcissists in the Apple community, no? Every thread has at least a few posts just like that one: "I don't use... so why should anyone want..." Someone always answers along the lines that you did but the narcissists never seem to learn... or the abundance of them outnumber the reach of such rationale... or "we're making them as fast as we can"??? ;)

I think the quote is rarely taken into its proper context, which was that you don't need a stylus to operate an iPhone, you just need your fingers. Smartphones with styluses pre-iPhone required them to operate the basic functionality of the device - hence the 'getting them out, putting them away - yeurgh' part.

Apple Pencil support would be in addition to, but not necessary for an iPhone to function, so releasing an iPhone with Pencil support still wouldn't be in opposition to what Steve was saying.

You don't understand Steve Jobs one bit. It wasn't "his biggest nightmare". The reality is, he didn't think that a stylus would improve the iPhone. Since it wouldn't improve the iPhone, he wouldn't build an iPhone with stylus. So far that's what anyone would do. What surprised some people every time he did it was him claiming that since iPhones don't have a stylus, a stylus is bad, evil, something that the iPhone will never have. If something changed, like changes in the way a stylus work, or changes how people use phones, so that a stylus was actually a good idea, he wouldn't have had any problems adding a stylus and presenting it as the most brilliant stylus ever.

What would _never_ have made him adapting a stylus would have been other companies, especially companies without any taste, adding a stylus to their phone. Quite the opposite.

Why is everyone so in love with OLED? It’s like purchasing a ticking time bomb until burnin sets in. I plan on keeping my devices for more than a year so I don’t want an OLED anything. And it has to diminish the resale value. UGGHHH. Just update the SE.

Best comparison ever. I'll remember that one.

So, no more 4” phones like the SE? Or will it be the ‘one more thing’-surprise?
I’ve seen too many people switching back from larger iPhones to just the SE.
I myself am happy with the 4” size, never even considered to moving to a larger phone. Yes, I’ve checked them out. They look gorgeous but the increased size doesn’t work with me even though I need to use my reading glasses.
I believe an iPhone the size of the SE but all-screen will come in the fall of 2019.

silly question,
why is verizon and other conglomerates offering these phones for like 29¢ and buy 1 get 29 free?
according to their mundane commercials.

since i never had a cell phone or service i have no idea.

Contractual lock-in. If you are willing to lock-in enough, one of them might pay you to take a phone. Think car leases. Why are car companies offering cars for as little as $0 down? Or maybe cash back (effectively giving you cash to take a car)?

General answer: no seller is so generous... there's always a hook in any "too good to be true" offer. Dig in and you'll find it.

Totally agree. The X which I own is HUGE and my gosh, I'd hate anything larger. My fiancé has the SE and the size is perfect. Maybe next year we'll see a new X style SE. 699 for a 6.1 entry level is just crazy.
We shall see - each country is different to the other when it comes to phone market trends.

I really wish they would move away from an LCD display altogether. I would totally get the 699 iPhone but after owning a phone with an OLED display, idk if I could go back to LCD (seriously first world problems).

No requirement for you to buy an LCD screen, nor does Apple making a model with one block or harm anyone wanting to buy an OLED version. So your wish is mostly just wishing others can't get a phone model they might want. If it came true, you wouldn't personally gain anything... nor lose anything.

Buy the one you want. Others may find value in the LCD version... or just enjoy the lower price for something where they might not even be able to see a difference (especially when they are not using each technology side by side).

It's more than a hair bigger. The lack of bezels contribute to its awkwardness as well.

There is interest in a smaller display. Apple has no real way to judge as it has never offered a premium small screen device alongside the others. The SE came close in terms of CPU/GPU and Camera, but the screen and everything else prevented it from getting there.
