Geekbench isn't really great for sustained loads. it takes what, 3 minutes?

Both chips are 8th gen, so if this were the case, using the 28W TDP (beefier) 2.3 chip would make absolutely zero sense in any context.

i mean, if that's the case i'm selling my 2.3ghz and buying a 1.4 and profiting :D

The 1.4Ghz is also faster by running Cinebench R15 for 15 minutes (which is a realistic benchmark). They both score relatively the same at around 685, but the 2018 2.3Ghz stabilizes at 620 while the 1.4Ghz stabilizes at 655.

Not a huge difference, but it’s there. That’s probably due to the 0.1Ghz difference in boost clock (1.4-3.9 vs 2.3 vs-3.8).

I had a 2018 Air for a bit. The speakers are about the same as those, which is still good. The screen is the same as every other MacBook Pro screen, mine looks fine, though I know a few have uniformity issues.
Ok, I see sound quality has taken quite a bit step down in entry Pro if it is now about same quality as in Air 2018. Pro used to be noticeable better than Air.

Good to hear your screen is fine. Others you are referring to who are having uniformity issues, do they also have new entry level 1.4 GHz Pro?

What is battery capacity in new entry level Pro? I suggest using free CoconutBattery app to check that.
Especially interesting to see if design capacity and full charge capacity match or is battery under 100% health right away?

Hey @NBAasDOGG, what are your impressions of battery life between the two models? I am super curious to see if the new 1.4 model has superior battery life to the 2018 or 2019 4tb port models. Any chance you can run a battery test?

I would like to do an extensive battery test, but I can clearly see that the 1.4Ghz 2019 wins over the 2.3Ghz 2018 when running Cinebench R15 for 15mins straight. 2019 drops 6% and 2018 drops 11%. (keep in mind that the 2018 is at 73 cycles)

Cool

When are you going to post up some info and pics of this thermal mod?

thanks

Some pics for you sir. (The Mod doesn’t screw up your warranty, because you can always remove the thermals pads).

The bottom aluminum can get hot after running 20min Cinebench R15 (unrealistic torture), but will not burn you or anything.
It will definitely keep your "Ding Dong" warm during the winter :D

Doesn’t that also transfer more heat to battery due to bottom plate getting hot after mod?

Not really, because the heat is only on the CPU and fan area.
Realistically speaking, I think the hot air inside the MacBook is more harmful to the batteries when compared to transferring the heat to the bottom aluminum.

So bottom plate is not getting any hotter in battery area after mod? Hot air is usually blown outside the case by the fan using heatpipe to transfer hot air to fan exhaust vent.

Battery heat is pretty easy to verify by using CoconutBattery where it shows the battery temp. If you compare battery heat before and after using the same test method should give some advice.

Hey! you're the only person I've found to have both. Contemplating the refurb 2018 2.3ghz vs this new 1.4ghz.
Three questions!
1. How are the speakers comparatively?
2. Do you find the fan noise is louder?
3. How's the 'real life' speed, given the lower 1.4ghz non-turbo base clock?

Thanks!!
1. the speakers are the same
2. 2018 tb model have 2 fans , 2019 base model only have 1 fan so 2018 tb model wins.

What is the size of your SSD? If it 512 could you run some benchmarks on that please?

I find this super odd.
Why would Intel and Apple charge more for an inferior chip that needs more cooling?
If that were the case the 1.4 chip in the dual-fan case should perform even better.

I can't use the 1.4 model because I need the extra TB3 ports, but damn.

I actually think that the 1.4-3.9Ghz (i5 8257U) chip is a highly binned version of the 2.3-3.8Ghz (i5 8259U) chip running at extremely low voltages.
It’s even more shocking that the 1.4 chip with single fan runs cooler than the 2.3 with dual fans.

You can actually increase performance by doing this Mod (1-2mm thermal pads on the heatsink - will NOT void warranty):

Just got mine (entry level Pro 128GB). Initial test results show that ssd speed is what seen in initial reviews. Also I think that keyboard has a little cheaper feel than in higher priced earlier released Pro model (but I have tried those at the shop so hard to say for sure but when I compared there between Air they felt better in Pro). This has a little hollow sound when typing, even a bit hollower than in Air 2018. Display looks rather nice but jury is still out on that. Also it seems that display is not Samsung or LG but some other (cheaper?) brand. Using Ioreg command to show panel maker says it is FMX.
What panel others got? My MacBook is from C-factory, made about in June. Battery seem to be Simplo and design charge capacity 5103, full charge capacity 522x something but I haven't yet charged it. It had about 80% battery when first time turned on.

About speakers I cannot say yet for sure, but maybe about nearly as good as in Air 2018.
Touchbar, well we'll see, but I guess I may learn to live with it...

More testing need to be done. Some minor marks on the chassis so build quality is what it is...

Where did you see that it runs cooler than the 8259U ?

I haven't seen a benchmark comparison under sustained load between 1.4Ghz and 2.4Ghz (or 2.3Ghz 2018), although someone mentioned Cinebench R15 above. Did I miss it ?

I own both 1.4 and 2.3 :D

1.4:

19C9B26C-58ED-4ECE-8AD3-39B9A217CDE3.jpeg

Max temp 1 run R15 result in 97C, but takes time to get there. Idle = 43C

2.3:

D97A48BD-EDAC-4280-81E0-8252143194D6.jpeg

Temps instantly fly to 96C and top out at 100C. Idle = 50C

Running R15 for 15 mins on both machines result in 94C for the 1.4Ghz and 98-100C on the 2.3.

What panel other got in their new entry level Pro?
Mine is FMX something so obviously not Samsung or even LG but some not so know panel maker. I bet it is not the same use in higher priced 13" pro models.

You can check it with this command found in this thread
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2018-pro-users-do-u-have-lg-or-samsung-screen.2128760/
So open terminal and type: ioreg -lw0 | grep "EDID" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r

Also those who have both new 1.4 entry model and comparable 2018 or 2019 higher speed CPU model can you comment how does keyboard typing sound and feel seem like? I definitely say this entry Pro has a little cheapish hollow sounding keyboard when I compare it to my Air 2018. Also if I tap bottom cover with my finger it sounds much more hollower in Entry Pro than in my Air 2018.

Screen brighter in my Entry Pro than my Air 2018 with 400 nits os update installed but different is not huge. Maybe Pro -1 click is about the same as Air 100%.

Sound quality is about the same as in Air 2018, maybe Air 2018 has even slightly better a little wider sound and bass. Hard to say they are both little different but Pro maybe has that hollow sound here too.
Edit. There is more and better bass in Air 2018, otherwise pretty close.

Can others please check the same things?

I have the entry level 1.4Ghz 2019 and the more expensive 2.3Ghz 2018 (with dual fans). Keyboards feels exactly the same, speakers also sound the same (both should sound better than the Air).
The 2018 uses symmetrical speakers when compared to the 2019, but they do sound exactly the same.
Biggest downside is the slower SSD. You won’t feel the difference on day to day usage, but the numbers don’t lie :)

I also measured screen brightness at 100% using SM208 luminance meter.
- 2018 = 477 nits center.
- 2019 = 471 nits center.
- Both have excellent P3 color gamut.

For those who want to upgrade, just get the 256GB version of 2019 entry model. It’s faster than the more expensive 2.3Ghz 2018, has the upgraded keyboard and runs slightly cooler (yes, with one fan!). If you already have the 2018 model, there is no reason to upgrade at all...
To me, the €2000 256GB 2.4Ghz 2019 model doesn’t make any sense at all.

What panel is in your units? See my message above how to check it fast and easy.

I wonder what brand this FMX stands for. I guess it is definitely not LG or Samsung because those are LP and LSN, so this must be from some some new maker. I have compared colors to my Air 2018 which has LG panel and yes, the Pro has deeper reds and maybe other colors too and it seems definitely warmer with True Tone on but without it not much different. It is brighter so that Pro -1 maybe -2 (probably 1.5 would be equal) clicks is about the same as Air 2018.

Maybe the sound quality in Pro has been the same but I'd say definitely fuller sound in my Air 2018.

Click launchpad and under other folder you find program called Terminal. Open it and then just copy paste that ioreg.... command in my previous message (Use command and C to copy and command and V to paste it there and then just hit enter and it list results immediately just copy here what is says there). To exit Terminal just close it by X in the left corner. Thats it.

That's it. Mine is the same but FMX909 but that probably just manufacturing date or some batch and the first letters indicate brand and model. Definitely some new panels are nothing can be found searching that. Too bad no more LG or Samsung panels.

What is your manufacturing date and plant (that can be seen from serial number first letter, mine is C) and made in June.
Manufacturing date can be seen easiest if you download free Coconutbattery just check google to find it. It also tells condition and brand of the battery, mine is Simply battery. Could you comment what battery full charge capacity in yours? Mine is around 5200.

ok here is what I found:

5118 full capacity charge
Mfg date 5-12-19 but then it says 6-3, so hmmm
Battery Mfg = DSY

How do I tell who screen manufacture is??

My 2019 13" MBP 2.4 shows the panel as something "LP". I guess it's from LG then.
Yes it is LG which is good. Looks like they did not afford to put LG or Samsung panel in cheaper entry level Pro. Too bad. Any idea what is that FMX manufacturer code?

Good question about screen. It would be interesting to see some measurements of FMX panel. I'd say it is not so colorful as the ones I've seen in pricier model Pro demo models and also brightness difference is not so obvious (at least when I test it at home) between my Air 2018 and Entry Pro if I compare it to what I have tested at the shop between Air 2018 and pricier 13" Pro models.

Coconutbattery lists manufacturing date for machine and battery. Can you check them both?
Your battery is DSY (maybe Desay or something like that). Mine is Simply.
What factory yours is made in? Mine is C. You see that in machine serial number first letter.
