2020 Macbook Air order status

UK. Ordered i5-16GB-256 on 18th March, originally promised for 4-10 April, then 9th April, delivered this morning.

Timeline of my order:

Ordered silver i5/16GB/1TB on 3/23. Initial delivery estimate 4/8 - 4/15.

Credit Card charged 3/27.

Status changed to preparing to ship on 3/30.

Status changed to shipped on 4/1, via UPS.

Delivered to my home in Wisconsin, USA on 4/7
15 days after placing the order.

The shipment originated in Shanghai, with stops in Tokyo, Anchorage, and Louisville KY, where it waited over the weekend for customs clearance.

I really appreciate everyone sharing their updates. It's been helpful and interesting to see your experiences, for example how long between card card being charged and computer being shipped, and how people's delivery dates compare to the initial delivery window Apple gave them at the time they placed their orders.

i think Amazon and Best Buy might have your model in stock and ready to ship.

I thought about it, but I wanted the ability to return to Apple if the 8GB turns out to be underpowered for what I needed, and Apple currently has (far and away) the most generous return policy with the whole "can keep until 14 days after Stores reopen).

This is the first computer from Apple I've ever ordered (as a customer of 20+ years) where I haven't maxed out the RAM. Slightly nervous the performance is gonna be unacceptably slow in an OS update or two.

There was confirmation that it is not until 14 days after stores open. It’s normal 14 days

I'm confused about that. I believe the only people who got the extension are ones who bought from an actual physical Apple store, who were within their 14 days of return eligibility, when all the stores closed for COVID who get the extension. Everyone else who has bought these online only have 14 days to decide to return.

EDIT, NM I just got it, you were saying same thing, just a different way

Yeah, I also thought we had up to 14 days starting from when our local store re-opened but it does seem clear that it's the standard 14-day return window, with the return having to be triggered online and sent back by post.

I've never returned anything to Apple before, but like the idea that if the MBA isn't right for me I can get it refunded and either order the 16" MBP or wait for the smaller MBP to be upgraded and released. I'm coming from a screen-damaged late-2013 15" MBP.

My i5/8/256 is due to arrive in around a week.

Finally my shipment got released from Shanghai. Hoping to still get my i5/8/256 by Thursday morning

I ordered the same configuration and also with delivery date of Thursday. It was sitting in Shanghai for several days and just updated. Does yours say "In transit" but still Shanghai for the location? Where are you getting delivered to? Outside Philadelphia here.

Texas. Yeah still says Shanghai but thats because it was the last place it was at. The specifics are:

  • 10:51 pm
    SHANGHAI CN
    In transit
  • 10:51 pm
    SHANGHAI CN
    International shipment release - Import
Wouldn't be surprised if it reaches Alaska next for sorting, like it has with other people before being overnighted to the local area. Tomorrow / tomorrow evening will be a good indicator whether or not Thursday morning is actually happening.

Apple's site says April 13, Monday, delivery. But I trust Fedex a bit more with their packages / I think Apple is being conservative.

Looks like ours are on the same plane. Mine also says the 13th on Apple but the 9th on Fedex (which is what I am going with). It looks like everyone that has made it to Alaska gets it the next day. So if not, Friday the latest it may be :)

Well, I ordered a space grey i7/16gb/512gb on March 29 (9 days ago) and my order is still stuck in “processing”. I’ve nearly canceled my order about a half dozen times already (debating whether I should just wait and see what the next MacBook Pro looks like) and I’m afraid if I do not see any action on this order soon I may end up doing just that.

Ordered gold basic config April 1, been in processing ever since. The delivery estimate is April 9 - April 16 with express delivery, I’m in the Chicago area. Figured there would be delays because of the international pandemic situation, but of course I’m eagerly awaiting updates. Will post updates as they come, though, to keep this thread updated on various timelines.

I would say be patient or if is available from retail store, might want to think about it (although I dont know offhand if that is a base configuration?). I ordered mine the day after accouncement, didnt get charged until 3/27 I believe (it was more than a week), didnt get to preparing for shipment until 4/1, shipped 4/2 or 4/3, then spent 4 days at the local Fedex. It is now finally on route to the states (at that point it is quick to house delivery). So essentially from the time I ordered it, may be 3 weeks until I received mine (assuming it is coming Thursday)

I've ordered mine on March 21rst, the MBA is suppose to be deliver at my front door 4/13. SOOOOO LONG.

By the way, UPS stop confirming the delivery since this morning.

I too ordered a base SG version a few days before you - with zero movement since then. I did have an April 4-10 delivery window, but that’s looking nearly impossible given nothing has transpired as of earlier today. Maybe they’re trying to be efficient on filling up whatever airfreight allocation they can get and bulk shipping things over here. Like me, if you’re in the Chicago area, you know that there have been very few flights in and out over the past couple of weeks. And given Apple ships everything airfreight, it has to be effecting them pretty significantly.

Same with my base model. I would have ordered from Best Buy but I'm a teacher so I took the education discount of $100. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it, but yes, I think an extra week or two is worth $100 even if my impatient self is angry.

It seems like the base models are slow and mine is also gold. I am wondering if the gold ones are not available. Who knows. I wish they would charge my card or do something to move this show along.

Why "good lord?" Have you been keeping up with what's going on in the world?? Nothing is like it used to be. Your beloved computer will get to you when it gets to you and that's just the way it is...for now.

That's exactly why I ordered my dang computer to begin with. I need another computer at home to handle the computing load of 3 kids in school and myself. My district only provided me with an ancient Chromebook and it's not sufficient for all I want to do. This pandemic is increasing everybody's need for technology. I'd like to get it soon because the struggle is real at home ;)

Yep, I did the education store purchase as well. I would have grabbed one from Costco, who at the time was selling the base models for $949, but I foolishly wanted the additional savings (plus the added 3% I get from my Apple Card). Our son is making due using a buddy‘s old laptop, so it’s not critical he gets the new MacBook Air immediately, but it is frustrating...more that I let my frugalness prevail when he could have been working on a new MBA two weeks ago if I had just been willing to spend the extra ~$50 at the time. Oh well, he’ll survive.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their order experience.

This is excruciating! :) Ordered an i5/16GB/512GB in Silver on March 25. Apple stated delivery estimate at April 10-17. Credit card charged April 2nd but still hasn’t moved from “Order in Progress”. I’m in NYC.
Update: mine just moved to “Preparing to Ship”!

Cancel!!! ... lol. You are spending a lot for a MBA. I had ordered the same. Also was stuck in processing. I canceled and got the base model MBP 16 inch for only 24% more. From Apple refurb. Btw... it also shipped immediately :)

The 16 is way too big for my purpose, in fact if they still made an 11 inch that’s what I’d be going for. And I don’t want the current 13 Pro because the butterfly keys are terrible imo.

I think I will wait another day and if my order is still stuck I will take it as a sign that it wasn’t meant to be lol.

Ugh so frustrating. I'm right there with you. Luckily this week is a short school week here so I only have to endure two more days this week. Hopefully we will have it early next week sometime. Fingers crossed anyway.

Shipment exception update from fedex. Yay a delay and no new ETA.
