Hi everyone , just found this thread in google so thought i could get some advice, basicly i have the slight yellow tinge on the bottom center right of screen however never really noticed it properly until i did the test.i can live with it as its not that bad but still feel a bit anoyed after having purchased it yesterday its not 100%.If i take it back to the shop(PC World) UK am i right in thinking it will be a straight forward replacement as its still within the 28 days of ownership?

cheers

Dave

Legally this is the resellers issue nothing to do with Apple.

Go to PC World...

ZOMG! I just exchanged my 27" iMac for the third time due to the yellow tint issue. The fourth iMac sort of has it near the bottom, but it is so faint that I can hardly notice even when I slowly drag a white or grey box from the top of the screen down to the bottom. The other three were very noticeable when performing such a test. On the other hand, this one doesn't seem to be as quiet as the other three. Am I being anal?

I just went to an Apple Store nearby and explained my problem to one of the staff members. He said, he's never heard of the problem and I should talk to someone else in the store. The second guy at least knew a few people with the same problem and sent me to the store manager in order to find the best solution for me.

The store manager said that Apple is well aware of the problem and they've had quite a few people complaining about it. Obviously, the majority of people just doesn't see the yellow tinge as most customers use the computer non-professionally. When writing emails, surfing the web, watching movies or playing games, users normally don't notice the tinge and hence don't complain.

The store manager said, I should send back my machine as soon as possible and wait for a few weeks. Apple tries to fix the problem with every new batch and he thinks that it'll be completely fixed within a month or so.

I'm still waiting for my RMA but the machine is already packed and ready to be returned. Let's keep our fingers crossed that week 1-4 machines will finally be faultless.

Well, here's the end of my tale:

We bought a 21.5" iMac through Micro Center, as we have found that while the browsing experience at an Apple store is intoxicating, the actual purchasing part is rather stressful. We cracked the box, and sure enough, there was the yellow.

We called Apple and were told we could make an even exchange at an Apple store. When we got to the Apple store, we found that no, no even exchange, only warranty repair replacement. So we took our box and went back to Micro Center. The tech support guys cracked two boxes (Week 50 and 52) and both had faulty monitors. The demo display unit (Week 40) had a very slight tinge, barely noticeable, and we figured since it had been running non-stop for close to 3 months, this is as bad as it is bound to get. So they wiped the demo clean, and let us have it, with a 10% rebate. We took the 10% and bought a copy of Windows XP SP3 so we could do a Bootcamp install and I could run my ancient, but fully adequate, version of Photoshop 7 for Windows.

The tech guys at Micro Center went above and beyond, and I'm keeping my receipt in case the problem gets more pronounced, or they do some kind of official recall.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my new computer is just lovely. There's only one or two web sites where the yellow is even visible, and it's very slight. So I think this will work ... for now.

Week 43

I just ordered my 27" online and just got my invoice. They are sending me a week 43 imac. Why not the latest??

hi, i have the same problem of yellow tinge on my iMac 27" (week 49)
but on my iMac the problem is not permanent: sometimes the screen seems perfect, other times it is dreadful (with the same application)
is it the same for you?
(sorry for the english i'm french)

Pas de problem, ami! Ma Français c'nest pas bien, mais je comprends plus ce je suis parle! Et votre Anglais, je pense, c'est le meilleur de les deux.

Mine does about the same thing. Sometimes hardly noticeable, sometimes very clearly there and annoying. It comes and goes, which is a pain, because I sometimes get the idea of what this computer was SUPPOSED to be.

2nd i7 27" now (week 52 unit), and still a yellow tint to the bottom right of the screen.

Getting frustrated now :-/

This is the case with mine, hence I spend half of the time convincing myself that maybe I'm imagining the yellow and that the only problem is with my eyes and head. The "yellow tinge" is more pronounced sometimes and not so much at other times, I think it gets more pronounced if the screen has been on for a while?

Before any one comments I have considered that the yellowing could be affected by the lighting environment of the location of the iMac but have definitely concluded this is not the cause.

I would be interested if others experience the yellowing of their screen sporadically or if it's permanently evident.

Is it possible that the tinge reports may represent actually represent multiple issues that we are all lumping together?

1) Some people report a rather constant warming in the lower right corner that may or may not worsen over time. Some people have reported a "glob-like" discoloration that changes position and shape. Some have even reported that the yellowing got better temporarily after applying the firmware update (or some other maneuver), only to worsen again later.

Could a panel problem account for all of these symptoms?

2) Has anyone been able to document a gradient problem in any color besides white/gray?

I have a smooth gradient on my screen. It affects all colors and just seems to make them warmer at the bottom and cooler at the top. It is more noticeable with lighter, paler colors. It is like the white balance shifts from the top to the bottom of the screen, makes calibration of the display useless for one half or the other.

Your problem seems to be representative of one group.

If you take a non-gray/white color as background, is there a saturation point at which you no longer can see the gradient? Is it the same for all hues? Is the gradient progressive (linear) or non-uniform ("banding")?

For those panels that display a progressive or predictable gradient, would it be possible to implement an "anti-gradient"? (e.g. GPU firmware?)

I am on the phone to replace my 3rd unit.

Sales guy said Apple addressed the issue on the 18th so new machines shipping after that date should not have the issue.

Technical support says issue is still being investigated and wants to capture my machine.

Like they don't have enough of them with this problem.

They cannot even get their stories straight. WTF

I'll keep you posted on my quest to get an Imac with a decent screen.

I think even Apple does not know the answer

I think they make stuff up.

What those guys told me are polar opposites so I don't know what to believe.

The sales guy processing my new order does not know anything about whether or not the problem is fixed.

Just got my week 53, bottom half of my screen is yellow. Regretting this iMac -- wish I would have stuck with my 30 ACD. If I could return it for my money back, I would.

Don't tell me you sold your old computer BEFORE you bought the new one???

You CAN get your money back, and if you still have your ACD, maybe you should.

Picked up my 3rd 27" i5 from the local Apple store and still has the yellow tint at the bottom. This one is a week 51 vs the other two were week 45, 46. The current one is much less noticeable and only extends about 3" up from the bottom. The week 46 27" I had taken back was about half way up the screen and about 2" off the right side all the way up.

The manager at the Apple store has been more then helpful and willing to keeps swapping machines but I've decided to stick with this one and just create a claim with Apple for now. Hopefully in the very near future they figure this issue out and can fix this machine vs swapping out.

This current machine seems silent compared to the first one so I'm guessing I avoided a HDD issue there as well. Frankly just tired of swapping machines (and driving 20miles each way) so I hope they fix this issue soon.
