archipellago,

Since you always have a comment to make about the iMac in nearly every thread, please tell us about your iMac. What problems do you have? Have you addressed these problems with Apple? Or do you even own an iMac...?

Thanks!
Bryan

You probably should ignore archipellago as his contributions are pointless and basically repetitive - read them, it's the same message in every thread. His claims are inconsistent, (he claims he has owned the new generation iMac but his post history says otherwise) and is basically full of BS. Forums sometimes contain such sad types as archipellago - the word Troll springs to mind, however I genuinely think he may be suffering from OCD.

Careful, I got a warning and even a "point", whatever that means, from the mods for some very similar words about a certain other forum member who I shall not name here.

Finally got a keeper

Well, now on my fourth i5 iMac...and it appears to be be tinge-free (and I am very sensitive to the tinge). I waited until today (one week now with #4) to be sure the tinge didn't develop after being out of the box for a few days. First iMac was a week 46 (yellow tinge at bottom), second was a week 48 (yellow and pink splotching accross the screen, as well as two dead pixels), third was a week 48 (didn't check the tinge-boxed it right up after seeing FIVE dead pixels in the blue loading screen). For the fourth I demanded they unbox the machine in the store - a week 52. No dead pixels, no tinge, no flicker, no HD grumbling.

Knock on wood...I think I finally got a keeper.

Now I'm just enjoying the amazing gaming this machine is capable of (which really came as a surprise). So far I've been playing COD4, Sims3, L4D(1), Dirt2, Dragon Age, and Tropico 3. Everything maxed out except AA (which from what I understand wouldn't help with this configuration anyways).

I was worried I would need an i7 for the gaming described above, but it isn't necessary. Now I'm happy with the i5 purchase since I had to go into the store so often to exchange it. I'd still only be on #2 if I had gotten an i7.

Best of luck to all the 27"ers out there! ;)

I agree with you and your "words of caution" are very true...but I wish the moderation staff would do something about archipellago. He's been trolling on this forum for weeks...

I can half understand the passion some have about this problem I must say. I mean, it is a frustrating ordeal to spend so much money when it seems almost every, if not every machine, has these display issues.

I have to say I'm quite nervous and probably shouldn't have ordered my unit, but we shall see.

I just picked up a base 21.5 and after doing the test I think mine is fine. Mine is a week 48. Everything seems to be alright. No flickering either. My roommate got the exact same model as me a few weeks back so I'll have to compare mine to his sometime, although his flickers often though.

Hi all,

Just got my week 53 i5 today, and opened it tonight...

Ok, here is the deal.. I don't see a big difference between the gray bar on top and the gray bar on the bottom, but it looks to me like I have the exact same problem as my last i5 - a yellowish tint wide band going down the center of the screen!!! I can't believe it! Now, I have all soft lamp lights in here, no bright lights, so maybe that is helping? It looks like a yellow-ish band, and the screen may look slightly more yellow to the right, but my god, my eyes may be playing tricks on me looking at this massive bright white 27 inch screen! I will get my wife's opinion, but of course she will think I am crazy and should drop this whole thing... again... (-:

BTW, 2 tb hard drive makes normal sounds (not dead quiet but not loud grumbling) but this iMac runs a bit louder overall as well.. Kind of sounds like a constant quiet fan in the iMac.. I lifted it off the desk and it became more quiet - maybe it is just the fact that fans run louder to support the 2tb drive?

Anyway, not sure what the heck to do at this point.. Will play with it for a few days and decide..

Good news is everything else seems to be running fine, just wondering if this is an actual issue on mine, or an optical illusion with such a large bright screen in a room with soft lit lamps?

Edit: Used the new iMac this morning in different light - definitely the same issue as before.. Yellow wide tint down the center of the screen, and the right side of the screen is more yellow than the left.. ugh.. I told myself that if the new iMac only had slight yellow at the bottom I would deal with it, but the yellow tinge going down the center is REAL annoying.. Will call Apple this week.. I thought long and hard about returning and getting a MacBook Pro, but just can't justify spending more money for a lot less screen, processor, HD size, etc.. I still have the contact information for the Apple Senior Advisor so I will contact him this week to see what to do and see if they have an update on the fix.. If they are TRULY committed to fixing this I could possibly wait it out and get it fixed, but if they do not and consider it a cosmetic issue I will be stuck!

I think the OP's post (first post) shows photos of a yellow in the center in some of the photos (comparing with one that has the yellow on the lower right edge).

Another easy "test"

Hello!

Yesterday I came about another "test" for the tinge. Play an "I'm a Mac" commercial video. Look for the shadows of the guys, press Pause. Drag the windows downwards into the suspected yellow area: The shadows almost vanish!
That cannot be overlooked, this is not a brainiac illusion. This is demonstrateable in a workshop.

I checked the machines on the desk in a local media store (where I also purchased mine) - they all had the issue, the macbooks not.

I think I will have one try of getting it fixed and then stay with it until a real fix comes if I'm not lucky.

A cousin of my works for Sharp Corp. He mentioned, the LG panels don't have the best reputation in the industry. I guess he's biased, but don't WE see he's right this time?

SuAlfons

Well, I solved my moire problem by taking the photo out of focus. My eyes and Photoshop both say that I don't have a yellow area, but the bottom is slightly lighter than the top. Good enough to keep my i7, unless things change.

You don't? I see it right away in your screenshot.

Surface blur + Saturation boost:

Screen-shot-2010-01-02-at-12.09.04-PM.jpg

Original colors (no saturation boost):
31 by 31 pixel average in top left of the white area: #d0d2d6
31 by 31 pixel average in btm right of the white area: #c7c5c1

Picture:

Of course the closer the circle is to the bottom of those color graphs, the less it matters where the circle is from left to right, but you can clearly see the tendency toward BLUE for the top left, and YELLOW for the bottom right.

Just feel lucky yours is so desaturated. I believe mine is about the same as yours, and my gradient is in the same orientation. You only have a max of 6 difference between R and B (C7 vs C1 and D0 vs D6), so it could be much worse.

I am sticking with mine as well. Have been doing some work on it and it really hasn't affected my ability to tell that something is grey. I have software that tells me that. :) As for colors I'm aware the color temperature must affect them some, but I feel it's hardly noticeable to the eye. And I can always move a color swatch around the screen to see. It's just the greys and whites that are problematic for me... Notice it a bit too often in those situations.

tint

mine has got a slight yellow tint in the right bottom corner nd iv had my 21.5inch imac for 2days will apple let me exchange it for a macbook pro?

cheers

I suspect that you will have to get a refund and then buy a MBP.

Thanks, yep, I just took a look at the first post in the thread and the image posted by Knewsom with the yellow band in the center is identical to mine... Strange comfort in knowing I am not the only one! (-:

archipellago joined before you and he looks like a valid user to me. How is it trolling to support the views of people with problems?

hi,

i am from singapore and just did simple tests on my side and yes, the bottom half of my screen is yellowish. damn!

it is obvious even with my browser, numbers application (pretty much anything) with white background. doesnt have to be gray.

to compare with gray, i simply open numbers, expand it full screen and the table all the way too and select gray fill. good enough to test for his.

3rd Time Lucky?

Just recieved my 2nd 21.5" iMac (week 51, original was week 49) and the tinge is worse. Rang up straight away and now have a 3rd coming. The agent said he had never heard of the issue and that it was really odd to have a second one with the same problem. He was really apologetic but it's still annoying that apple havent acknowleged it as an issue :/. Lets hope the next one will be better.

You'd think they would at least acknowledge it internally so their employees don't look like uniformed idiots. Seems quite common to get a replacement with the same problems.

So, I got a 27" iMac yesterday, instantly noticed yellow tinge on test. Called Apple this morning and the guy over the phone instantly acknowledge the issue. He claimed Apple knew about it and that they had drastically improved the procedure of checking every iMac for yellow tinge before shipping and instantly shipped me a new one, while I could keep my current one until the new one shows up and have TNT picking the old one up from my house. He also claimed that this is no longer an issue with newest productions!

I'll have to say, I'm happy that Apple knows about it and how well they solved the issue for me. I should add that I purchased from Apple.com and that I was within 14 days.

I'll let you know how the new one turns out!

I love how they think the one you just received would be much different. I Mean, it will be 1-2 weeks older than a replacement.

I just love most of all how all the reps across the planet believe the issues have been fixed.

My new week 53 is also very bright in the corners with a black screen, just like your photo.. Didn't know if that was an issue, or just how LED screens are...
