The important question is what is his track record for "leaking" information ahead of a release?

I am new to the Mac Community as I just bought my first Mac in June - so I haven't heard of this guy. I have been waiting to get an iMac for when they release the new ones...and I hope it is tomorrow.

He's rock solid. But he rarely does it, and only ever low-key stuff like this where Apple isn't planning a massive media gathering.

Just wait until tomorrow and you'll see anyway. :)

16:9??!!

C'mon! These are computer monitors! Apple should afix these to 16:10. Period.

16x10 is so last century...

everyone knows the future is having a iTVphoneRefrigeratorToiletBed

So you never have to leave the world of Apple... it even wipes your butt with iPaper.

I've got a 25.5" vizio monitor that looks great, and for a tiny fraction of the cost of an overpriced Apple monitor. It has a glass screen, and works GREAT! Price? $400, at Costco (no longer available. sorry!)

That is a guess of his from Oct. 2009

Yes that was. I should have quoted his main page text.
The Talk Show Returns ★
My pal Dan Benjamin is off the sauce and we’re celebrating by putting our podcast back on the air, on a weekly schedule. Listen live this Wednesday at 1pm ET. We’ll have much to talk about, what with the new Mac Pros (finally, right?), speed-bump iMacs, and the gorgeous new 16:9 27-inch Cinema Display that Apple might hypothetically release tomorrow.

UPDATE: Doubly-hypothetical, but who knows, maybe even that desktop multitouch trackpad device I first mentioned last October, too.

We are all hearing these same whispers. The trouble is we are just whispering to each other. Hopefully, and sooner or later, one of us will be correct.

well, this whisper is from someone who may actually know something. I hope he is right.

Gruber never leaks information like this as a guess. He is too well connected, and that's probably his reward for being the Paul Thurrott of the Mac community. I can say with absolute confidence those who have been waiting for new iMacs and Mac Pros to have their credit cards ready tomorrow morning. This refresh will be happening.

I really hope it happens sooner rather than later.

As others have said I really hope the 27" Cinema display uses different backlighting than the current iMac does. 72% gamut really doesn't cut it for anything but the consumer market. I also hope it signals the arrival of a display larger than the 30".

I won't hold my breath waiting for the iMac to get a gamut improvement or less gloss. I've worked with the current generation of iMacs at the office and I have to be a minimum of 3 feet away before I stop noticing reflections. At that distance I have to crank up font sizes so I can read.

The Mac Pro should get a serious improvement, but the iMac is unlikely to get much more than a more energy efficient GPU that may even be slower than the one it replaces and tiny CPU speed bumps. The top i7 model is likely moving from 2.8GHz to 2.93GHz. Let's all get excited about a 4.6% boost

This is so exciting. I have been waiting for an iMac since the spring when the yellow tint issue kept me away. After I waited long enough for that to die down...it was time for a refresh. I can hardly wait!!!

Jeeze, if all this stuff releases on the same day it's gonna be quite a big day at the Apple Store. on the other hand if the store doesn't go down tomorrow, well . . . . . . ugly . . .

Probably the most egregious piece of Apple abandonware right now is the 30" Cinema Display.

It's still TFT (!!) and when you look at it in the store next to any other display you would swear its defective because there is virtually no contrast or brightness.

It's an abomination that Apple should even be selling such an outdated technology. I mean, even Dell is using LED IPS displays on both it's 30" displays.

Of course, not only are they still selling it, but it still costs $1800.

WTF.

+1

Would you just set this 'trackpad' where your desktop mouse is?

I suppose we'll see, if the device decides to materialize, that is. I'm hoping that whatever it is, it'll be a little less RSI-inducing than your standard trackpad or mouse.

True, but Dell also makes a 21.5" 1080p IPS display (U2211H) that runs from $250-$300. It also has displayport, dvi, and vga inputs (including component signal compatibility!). Not LED, though it *is* matte, and depending on one's needs it could prove quite a bit more useful than a built-in display or ACD.

And the U2311h for around $300. I have a U2209WA (16:10, $300) and it's a fine monitor.

So wait, will my 2009 27" iMac 'look' outdated with the imac refresh? I mean, will these cinema displays mockups be the new physical iMac screen? Or are these just for the seperate cinema screens, and the imac will look the same, but with USB 3.0, FireWire etc.?

All rumors I know but I would be pished if the refreshed iMacs actually looked different.

lower the price on the 24 inch display, please.
the 21.5' iMac display is too small, the 27' iMac display is too big, change that steve, please.

thanks.

I really hope this happens! I've been browsing these forums since Feb waiting on some type of iMac refresh. I've been ready to buy a 27" i7 for months now, but the thought of a yellow screen has kept me waiting. All I'm really hoping for in a refresh (at least for the high-end iMacs) is no yellow screens, more RAM at base price level, and better graphics. If Apple can deliever on this, I will be ready to place my order tomorrow! :D

The only reasons I'm not sure if it's really going to happen tomorrow is the back to school promotion and iLife Aug release. It would make sense to me that the new iLife would be installed on the new iMacs and Mac Pros... but we'll see. Apple seems to do a lot of things that don't really make sense.

5$ says the store goes down tomorrow morning, everyone has a heart attack, predictions abound over 2 hours as to new Mac Pros, iMacs and displays. Credit cards get emptied and are ready and finally it comes back up with...

iPhone 4 pre-orders for the 18 new countries that get it on the 30th.

Now, I'm almost always wrong when it comes to these things, so I'm throwing this out in the vain hopes that I am again wrong.

lol This ^
