Companies have to offer what the customers want or they wouldn't sell any devices. I thought this was common knowledge.

Really - so Apple should start selling Windows PCs and Android phones? They outsell Macs and iPhones quite comfortably.

Of course not. In true fanboy fashion, those who are saying they don't want or care about it will be singing its praises and how its the greatest thing ever on a phone once its released :) Thats how Apple fanboys are. They make like things they don't have on their iPhone isn't a big deal (like notification bars, multitasking etc..) and then once they are added to the iPhone, they all the sudden love it. Same will be true with 4G. My friends with iPhone act like its no big deal to be stuck on 3G, even when I can pull up websites like 10 times faster. iPhone users are good at settling.

Keeping the screen at 3.5" is a logical guess, but only taking into consideration the idea of Steve Jobs being a part of the decision making for the iPhone 5.

It was his opinion that 3.5" is ideal.

Also, leaving the screen alone makes it easier for existing applications, and also for compatability with past hardware.

That said, I don't expect the logical conclusion in this case and fully expect a 4" iPhone.

I also should note I couldn't care less either way, 3.5" or 4", the differences are little enough to influence my purchasing decisions.

Ever thought that maybe they don't actually care? I'm sure they're glad you like your phone but whether they care about it is a moot point.

For me, there are few things that have appeared on iOS that I see as game changers. Never use MMS, notifications are useful though turned off for most of my apps. Multitasking - hmm possibly, but it's absence wouldnt worry me.

I guess iPhone users who keep their phones for 2 years are a mystery to those who must have the biggest, fastest device and love to make it known that is the case. Guess I have better things to spend my money on than updating my phone every few months. My phone is an important bit of technology but doesn't rule my life.

It's 2012 and I can't believe at this day and age there are people that still want a tiny 3.5 inch display. My iPhone 4 has been in my desk draw for over a year because I was sick and tired of eye strain. Thankfully it no longer matters what these people want because we are going to get a larger display. 4 inches is good for starters and a welcome improvement. Plus LTE is also welcome. I'm so glad that fanboys who oppose these two welcome improvements will not get their way this year. SJ did his part and for that we are thankful but thank goodness he's no longer part of the process. Time to move on.

Boycott a larger display? WTF?

Personally i think 4.3" is the sweet spot. I would possibly consider Apple again if they did that, IF it worked on T-Mobile with their 3G (4G if Apple puts it on their phone) and T-Mobile is getting their networkupdated to work on everybody's frequency.
However, Apple also has things they would have to change about the iPhone besides the screen size. I hate the keyboard so they would have to have choices like Swiftkey at the very least. Notifications need to be better as well.

Id probably still stick with Android but if they made some of those changes, id at least consider it. Right now, it isnt a consideration at all.

The Only Reason I Bought a Droid over a Phone was due to smallish Screen..
I Still feel my 4.2" Galaxy R is small, and Apple is still using a 3.5"??
I Feel 4.5" or maybe even 4.8"(in a 4.5" Phone Bezel) will be great!!
So, A larger screen is always a good thing!
Hopefully, Apple upgrades battery and improve proc to Quad Core!(Just for Future Proofing :p)

Wirelessly posted

I'm ok with 3.5, but I'd love a bigger screen!

I think that the imminent addition of an LTE radio and chipset will require a larger battery, which will then justify enlarging the phone and it's screen.

Many of you have said that 3.5 was the ideal size and that you would never go any higher than that.

Are you going to stay true to your word and refuse to buy the 4 inch iPhone because it doesn't meet your requirements?

I'll buy the new iPhone regardless. I would still prefer a 3.5 screen though.

Keeping the screen at 3.5" is a logical guess, but only taking into consideration the idea of Steve Jobs being a part of the decision making for the iPhone 5.

All the recent news is that supposedly Jobs had a major hand in making the screen larger in the next model.

It was his opinion that 3.5" is ideal.

Got a quote of him saying that 3.5" is ideal?

It seems far more likely that it was the best compromise at the time as far as being as large as possible for the profit margin they wanted.

Also, leaving the screen alone makes it easier for existing applications, and also for compatability with past hardware.

A very slight increase, which is all 4" would be, shouldn't be a problem.

A larger increase could be an opportunity for Apple to announce some "new" size independent push.

Personally i think 4.3" is the sweet spot.

Like many others who've actually owned a large screen for a while, I also now think that 4" is small. Even 4.7" fits great in my pockets. It's not so much the screen size, as it is the casing, that makes the difference.

No one is saying 4" + is especially bad, but have you seen the comparison shots of the 4S, and the S III? The S III is like a spaceship compared to the 4S, no one with an iPhone wants a massive device.

IF it is 4 inches, these 3.5 inch lovers will be the first ones saying how the 4 inch phone is perfect.

I will say that I was the first one to poke fun at the HTC EVo (the first phone with a significantly larger screen than the iPhone that I was aware of at the time). Once I tried the phone I loved everything about the larger screen size. My point is that I think it is natural to get accustomed to what you are used to and assume things that are significantly different are crazy. Come to think of it, I thought the iPhone would be a ridiculous flop back when I first heard about it in 2006 and was obviously wrong about that too.

I suppose it's like having driven an SUV for a while. You'll think a normal car is a toy. Or like that ridiculously big watch fad. Wear one of those for too long and a gents sized watch suddenly is tiny. Use a Galaxy Note for a couple of weeks and you start thinking it's not too large for a mobile phone.

If we take a non biased look around, no matter what one thinks of Android, all top of the line models feature 4.5" or larger displays. This is because it's what the public wants. The market is what drives products forward & smartphones are no exception.

Try to avoid arguing that the massive volume of iPhone sales prove that people want 3.5".

Obviously they have no choice. If you want to buy an iPhone today you have to put up with the screen it's equipped with.

All rumors now seem to point to the new mainstream & conservative Apple choosing a 4.0". Therefore in today's market 4" is the new 3.5". Apple will still have the smallest display of all premium smartphones. No worry about innovation, or taking a risk, there's a lot of safety in a minor size increase.

We can't do what you're doing yourself in your first paragraph? Okey dokey

It has nothing to do with Apple not wanting a larger screen. They didnt want to make the phone larger. The iphone 5 will have a bigger screen, but the phone will not grow much in size. Like it or not, the one handed use of the iphone is a valid point.

I have a One X and love the screen size. I also own a 4S and like the one handed ease of use. The One X is not easy to operate one handed. It is a larger device. It uses the screen more on the front of the phone, less wasted space. But the phone is still larger.

If the Iphone 5 has a 4inch screen in almost the same size factor, My One X will then be retired.

I think this iPhone launch should be the experiment to see what most people want. Put out the usual 3.5 and another 4.2 version and simply see which sells more. Even though I personally like 3.5, I think just about every body would go for the bigger screen.

But I highly doubt they would have 2 versions because that would take engineering for 2 different phones. They just dont do that except for color and gigs. Which don't vary much at all

Their just going to put out one size, hopefully at least a 4 inch display and everyone else will fall in line. No need for Apple to make two devices.

Well said! This is exactly why I'm sometimes ashamed to be an Apple user. I personally don't like the sheep mentality that the staunchest of Apple users have. They hate or don't want what they don't have but praise Apple when they get those features that they criticized. I personally can't see why anyone would be ok with a 3.5 inch display, oh yeah because that's all Apple has offered

Dont see why that would be so hard. They have different size laptops and iMacs. Shouldnt be a problem at all. They just have to want to do it.

I always hate to see the excuses of why screen sizes would be so difficult for Apple and devs making the apps for them. Android phone makers and devs(who many make the same apps for both platforms) dont seem to have a problem with it. It just gets done.
