Yes, they are! Basic facial recognition and Face ID are not the same thing. The technology the latter uses is far more advanced and Apple spent millions on R&D which is why you only have one phone in the entire Android ecosystem which has a Face ID equivalent.
So far only the mate 20 pro has followed Apple in this endeavour. The rest of them seem to be forging ahead with in screen finger print sensors.

Samsung could afford to make a Face ID clone if they wanted to. But all rumours point to them having an in screen FPS on the S10.

Much prefer the fingerprint sensor.

I own a Pixel 3 XL now after owning iPhones for 11 years.

Not wanting face ID is one of the many reasons I decided to switch.
I thought FaceID was useless until winter comes and how cumbersome it is to unlock the phone with gloves.

Comparing a biometrics sensor for authenticity with a camera for convenience is obviously leading to a win of a biometric sensor.
So how about comparing biometric sensors instead? Apple Face ID vs Iris scan, vs Xiaomi Mi8 Pro Face ID sensor vs fingerprint, vs in display fingerprint?
But yeah, that wouldn't give this nice "my gear is superior" feeling?

Don't know what the result of the comparison would be but at least we would learn something from it.

And Mi 8 Pro has both fingerprint and face AUTH. This is cool. But just an opinion to show that others can do well. If authenticity is same then "better" is just a matter of feeling comfortable for yourself and this is typically different from person to person :)

They never showed the setup of Face ID in this vid:

I can easily recreate this. I first setup Face ID with my face. Then I try to unlock using the mask. Of course iOS will deny access, but once you put in the PIN code, FaceID will learn that the mask is acceptable and will allow access on next try with the mask.

This is nothing more but to raise the profile of the company.
What's the point of that if you know the passcode anyway?

I wish Apple would give us another option beside Face ID.

They do, you can passcode unlock only if you so wish. But by Apple giving us one option with biometric security with Face ID, it really does show you the amount of confidence they have in this technology with 3-D facial mapping. I don’t think it’s necessary to have another biometric security unlock alongside Face ID, when it works so well as it is.

So what?
Do you think someone is going to spend $550US to break into your phone? Do you think the police need to print a 3D head to unlock your phone? THOSE GOONS will simply hold the phone up to your face until it unlocks. Fingerprints and Face IDs are stupid. They're ONLY good to keep honest people out.

The fact it took hours to build the head and some expensive technology to get just one phone unlocked makes this impractical today, but people and companies will keep trying to find cheaper and faster ways to beat the process of any security system, smartphone or otherwise.

Your point about using violence against someone to unlock their phone is true no matter what security system method is in place. Fingerprint, 2 factor ID, password, a biometrics system all would be pointless against someone threatening serious harm or death if you don't voluntarily unlock your device or disarm whatever system is protecting whatever they want to get in to. At that point you are saying any and all security is pointless, including email, home, car, etc because most people will do what they are told if seriously and believably threatened with harm.

Having just adopted Face ID on my XR, I’ve noticed two things:
1. It’s fast as hell. Faster than I’d heard and on par with my 7 Plus as as far as unlocking speed.
2. It’s so nice to be able to unlock my phone post workout, cooking, etc without making sure my fingerprint is cleaned off. Just look at the phone while swiping up.

Face ID is awesome and Apple did it right.

For all the arguably valid complaints about lack of innovation in the post-Jobs era, you’ve got to hand it to Apple here. Face ID is legit. The “wow” factor still hasn’t fully worn off, at least for me, over a year later.

Sure, like I'm worried about someone making a 3d printed head of me just to unlock my phone. I think the risks are worth the much better functionality of my Note 9. But I'll be sure to watch for people carrying head around.

All one needs to do is keep their eyes closed. :apple:

Are you serious!!! All android phones aren't equipped with 3d face scaninis like iphone x. Try using Huawei mate 20 pro to be fair.

No biometric unlocking method is infallible. We’ve heard stories of siblings and children being able to crack Face ID and even non related people of Asian decent. The most important thing is if it’s good enough. Facial recognition on android phones (not including Samsung’s iris scanner) might not be very secure but it doesn’t matter because they all have finger print sensors which are secure enough.

I thought FaceID was useless until winter comes and how cumbersome it is to unlock the phone with gloves.

But trade that against the increase in unintentional unlocks because you just happened to look at your phone, or someone waved it in front of you. Or the fact it won't unlock on a desk unless you stare at it at the right angle. Or the fact you have to take your eyes off the road to unlock it in your car, or the fact that if you have it in the gym on an armband you have to dislocate your shoulders to look at and unlock your phone.

But gloves and winter, cool.

Oops again, you obviously didn't read my link, your links are talking about the S10, the link I posted was about the A8s.

Oh look at this article linked in the second link you posted:
https://bgr.com/2018/12/10/galaxy-a8s-vs-galaxy-s10-first-infinity-o-phone-is-now-official/

Finally, the Galaxy A8s doesn’t feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is actually surprising for a Samsung phone.

The new Galaxy A8s will be available in blue, green, and silver versions, and preorders will be available online at Samsung’s China store.

Yes only available in China but that wasn't really the point.

Take a look at this list.

I lock my device to prevent a thief to get my data, good pin number, face ID or touch ID they all work and are 100% secure for my use (one might be more practical than other).

I do not lock my phone to prevent the police to see my data (they have means to obtain that no matter what security is in place), so i really thing this all argument is silly.

I seriously doubt ANYONE would go to all this troubles of printing my 3d face just to get what a couple of emails and data?

People here make a big deal out of security, the real thing is who are you protecting yourself from? I protect myself from Thieves and people around me, all people who would not have access to this tech anyway!

That's why every android phone warns you about face recognition security concerns, when setting up face recognition, and a fingerprint is obligatory for banking apps, Google Pay etc

Get the hell out of here with your facts, this thread is for bashing Android with no evidence to back anything up!

Not sure on the timing of this article but this seem to just reaffirm what most already knew!

Depends. Most don’t know Apple uses 3D facial mapping for Face ID, which is more secure over 2D facial mapping. 30,000 projected dots on your face to unlock it is far more advanced than most are aware of, and the amount of R&D behind it is staggering.
