Restore to factory 4.2.1 and just use greenpoison this time.

I am using Tinyumbrella to try and jailbreak. My phone hangs at "Preparing iphone to restore." I need to keep my baseband so WTF do I do now?

EDIT: I get error 1604. I know what that means. But it shouldnt be happening.

I just tried this and I was given error 1013, saying it couldn't be restored... :/

I tried turning the phone off and turning it back on, but I got the same error. What now? lol

Make sure you hosts dont redirect to cydias server or you might get that error.
Then put it in DFU mode and restore to stock firmware thru itunes.

No need to put in DFU mode. I was with that error but solved things up.

You need to browse your hosts file. Google it "hosts file mac snow leopard"

How do I check this?

Go to Finder

Hit the "Shift + Command + G" keys

Paste "/private/etc/" into the search window

Press enter

Go to the file named "hosts"

Open it in TextEdit.app with root permissions

Remove the line "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com" at the end of the file

Save it

Restart itunes and try the restore again.

True, just a regural restore would do also.;)

Will this GP jailbreak wipe out my existing apps/save data or will it keep everything else intact?

If it does wipe everything out, how do I get all of my apps/prefs/save data back without losing the jailbreak?

So should we wait till 4.3 comes out in a few weeks and see if they will have an untether jb? I would hate to update to 4.2.1 and customize all my stuff and then have to do it all over again for 4.3

Well, this thing worked on the first try on my already JBen iPad on 4.2, without having to restore... Now I'm trying to do my other iPad with stock, freshly installed 4.2.1, and no luck... No with terminal, no by holding home, no by hard reset... I wonder if slamming the iPad into the wall would help!!! Maybe someone already tried that!!!

If you're on stock 4.2.1 it will not delete or alter anything besides adding the Greenpoison loader icon on your springboard in order to allow you to install Cydia.

It is up to you, after seen how long it took for this one to be released, I'm updating now, I bet it will end up been a while before a 4.3 JB comes out... BUt then again that is just me...

So I see what you're talking about but it won't let me save it. It says I need to go to "Get Info" for the file to change permissions, I go there but then am not sure what to do. :/

Huge thanks for the help lol :D

I've downloaded GP from multiple source links and every time I try to open the damn program it "crashes unexpectedly." WTF?

(The reason that works is tethered RS doesn't touch boot sequence at all, but GP does. They stay out of each others way)

Yes, tethered 4.2.1 redsn0w JBers can just run #greeenpois0n over it for untether (restore only if you have problem)

You can also do it by using tinyumbrella.
Download and run the latest version. http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/
Once you open it go to advanced/ set hosts to cydia on exit and Uncheck that box.
Exit TU, restart itunes and try the restore again.

Tried a few times now and no matter what I do it gets stuck at this screen:

Unable to find gBdevList
Unable to find fs_mount
Unable to find fs_unmount
Unable to find fs_load_file
Greenpois0n initialized

Worst JB ever... :(

also worked for me. i was getting stuck at the "greepois0n initialized" line too. just had to edit my hosts file and ran GP again. worked like a charm

I've been following all the advice people have been saying to make it work... nothing is working for me still.

Its not the worst JB ever, it's just buggy and needs to be fixed.

What did you change in the hosts file?

Mine currently looks like this:

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost

I don't understand why they'd release this jailbreak in such a ****** state. I know 4.3 is coming but this is just frustrating. 99% of iPhone owners aren't hackers in their spare time, why release a jailbreak that requires them to be?

I ended up figuring out how to edit the hosts file through root access. In my state of panic I temporarily forgot how to search the internet. xD Thanks again for all the help, very much appreciated! :)

People have been complaining and yelling for a release forever, I'm guessing they felt a little rushed and put it out without significant testing. I highly doubt they meant to have it be bugged.
