Looking forward to all the whining about how the 5.5" will have a feature or something that distinguishes it apart from the 4.7, other than the screen. "How dare they not make the 4.7 the flagship!!!!$#$@#!"

Really, you think that the 5.5" should be the flagship??
the 5.5" is only for China and most people who wants a phablet..

I think this would be crazy.

iPhone 4.7 sales would stagnate whilst people waited the few weeks for the 5.5" model.

It either has to be at the same time, or perhaps 6 months away to make people go for the 4.7" en mass

I wouldn't say crazy. A risk, sure. However like simple jack said above - both will for sure be successful. I don't see a month delay in the launch hindering the sales of the 4.7 in., simply because there will still be a large group of buyers who simply do not care for the 5.5 in.

I'm not getting that out of the news story, it's just true!

So its your opinion then, which is flying in the face of all the other rumors, and news leaks, i.e., mocks ups sent to the case makers.

Fair enough, we all are entitled to your opinions

Wait, I thought just last week we were told that the 5.5" model would be delayed until next year? Reuters citing "local media reports" and now everyone is back on the 5.5" is happening this year bandwagon? Good grief.

Nope I still don't think 5.5 is going to happen this year

Agreed. Hope it does though. It's not Apple like to bless us with two of the same device with a significant difference. If they can drag it out for another two years. They will.

How do you get that out of the news story, stating it will be being manufactured in August?

Do you have a lot of confidence in Reuters citing "local media reports"? Sorry Reuters doesn't have anymore knowledge of Apple's plans than DigiTimes or any other Asian news source.

I have a high level of expectation that we will see a 5" or 5.5" iPhone,m based not solely on one single news report but the body of rumors and news leaks.

I'm not saying its a lock, but I think signs are point more to a 5.5" iPhone then not.

The market is clearly shifting towards larger handsets.

*Has shifted
Samebung released the s3 with 4.8" screen over 2 years ago.
I can't help but feel that had Apple reacted back then, Andriod would not be as popular as it is today.

How will you be impacted if Apple releases different variant models of its most popular product?

As pointed out by someone else Apple currently has:
  • 21" and a 27" iMac
  • 13" and 15" MacBook Pros
  • 11" and 13" MacBook Air
  • 7.9" and 9.7" iPad

but no, the iPhone must stay one size because, um, uhhh, well, a few people on the internet said so, yeah that's why.

Your post and all the related replies are so comical to me because you don't have to purchase either product if what is released this fall doesn't meet your needs, but step aside because I am looking forward to the possible 5.5" iPhone while you cling to whatever idea you think makes you believe you know what the market wants.

I've said this in countless threads before, the problem is fragmentation.
In terms of hardware and software, do you really think apple is going to make a .8 inch bigger iPhone screen, and put the exact same specs in it as the iPhone with the 4.7 inch screen?

Oh let's take your example, and put it to use here. Let's see MacBook Pro Retina display 15 inch, oh -- what's this? it has a dedicated graphics card and it's 13 inch little brother does not? Oh well we can only imagine the same is going to be done to the iPhone. You know 5.5 get's 128GB, and the 4.7 stays at 64GB, so I can't get bigger storage because I have small hands, sure is fair for the consumer.

Software-wise I don't even have to explain, look at android if you want a good example.

We are not talking here about OSX but about iOS. So macbook is not a good comparation. iPAD air and mini is a good one

The state of professional reporting is seriously ill. Reuter's citing merely "local media" is a joke. Hey lazy ass Reuter's reporters how about using the "local media" report as a jumping off point to do your own investigation, you know like real reporters are supposed to do.

Similar thing (and totally a disgrace) happened on MSNBC yesterday when the call screener didn't bother to screen a call-in claiming to be a Sgt. @ the U.S. Embassy who saw MH 17 go down -- 500 miles away from the site of the shot down plane -- and the producer let them on the air.

Everyone has to be their own editor these days, regardless of who is publishing the info, because, apparently professional news media outlets don't know how to vet anymore. They might was well put "Rumors" after their network name too.

Larger iPhones have become more likely as voice use has diminished. It still looks ridiculous to speak into a phablet, but I'm not sure I can remember the last time I held my iPhone up to my ear. Phones have evolved into communicators that are used primarily for texting, checking email, and web surfing. Now instead of the smallest thing you can hold to your face, we want the biggest thing we can read but still tuck into a pocket.

I'm not sure if 5.5" is for me because of the portability of it....but I've got to admit that the larger screen would be nice. I'll probably end up with the 4..7".

I'm with you. The 5.5" isn't going to happen.

There haven't been any legitimate leaks of the 5.5" iPhone for a reason: it doesn't exist.

I agree, so far as I know, we have only see parts for the 4.7" model? But you never know. I don't go buy what some random person has guessed under the guise of an analyst.

And yes Flynn, that is an opinion ;)

They came pretty damn close with the iPad Air/iPad Mini Retina, no?
