Phones have evolved into communicators that are used primarily for texting, checking email, and web surfing. Now instead of the smallest thing you can hold to your face, we want the biggest thing we can read but still tuck into a pocket.

Well, depends entirely on one's age and profession, and dare I say, gender. Some people do need to speak w/ clients and cohorts out of the office. Some people don't work in that kind of job. Kids mostly text, not converse. Women like to talk w/ friends more than text. Men prefer to text, not talk, unless it's to their girlfriend or newlywed wife, which is mandatory. So, everyone's situation is different and with that size desire is relative to how one uses their phone.

Exactly....if I had a purse I always carried around, I might prefer the largest phone. At one time I thought I could make do with just my iPad mini, but after just one day realized that there are too many situations where I don't want to be carrying it or just leaving it out on a table or desk. It's gotta be able to slip in a pocket (for me anyway).

And you're right, there certainly are professions that require you to be constantly on voice calls. Email has become the primary mode of communication in my company.

Bottom line, there definitely is room for multiple size choices and I'm glad Apple is moving that way.

I've said this in countless threads before, the problem is fragmentation.
In terms of hardware and software, do you really think apple is going to make a .8 inch bigger iPhone screen, and put the exact same specs in it as the iPhone with the 4.7 inch screen?

As someone before me already stated, lets compare iOS devices side by side like the current iPad mini retina model and iPad air.

iPad mini retina 7.9":
  • Resolution 2048x1536 w/ 326ppi
  • A7 Processor 1.3GHz 64bit
  • M7 motion coprocessor
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1080p video recording
  • 1.2MP front camera
  • Capacity 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB
  • 10 hours battery life

iPad Air 9.7":
  • Resolution 2048x1536 w/ 264ppi
  • A7 Processor 1.4GHz 64bit
  • M7 motion coprocessor
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1080p video recording
  • 1.2MP front camera
  • Capacity 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB
  • 10 hours battery life

How do you get that out of the news story, stating it will be being manufactured in August?

We all get what we want out of these rumour articles. The only thing that is not there is confirmation from Apple. Before that confirmation is given by Apple (and not hacks like JimD who think they are Apple) then it's all just rumour.

So its your opinion then, which is flying in the face of all the other rumors, and news leaks,
You mean the ones that vary widely on whether or not the phone is seeing production issues and will even make it in 2014? Those rumors?

I wouldn't say crazy. A risk, sure. However like simple jack said above - both will for sure be successful. I don't see a month delay in the launch hindering the sales of the 4.7 in., simply because there will still be a large group of buyers who simply do not care for the 5.5 in.

I think people on these forums that have very narrow views would be shocked if you could walk into Apple stores and have the choice of two screen sizes for the same price. Just how many would go for the larger screen.

Some will decide the smaller is for them, but human nature would be to select the larger of the two if given a free choice by many I'm sure.

The only way this won't happen is if Apple put the price of the 5.5" higher than the 4.7" so there is a financial hit for selecting the larger screen, this would put some people off.

Given the choice between the existing 4", the proposed 4.7" and the pie-in-the-sky 5.5", I'd have to give it a good think weighing the 4" and 4.7". Cost, storage and "feel" would be the considerations. Considering my 4s is under 5" the 5.5 would be out regardless.

All of that said, I can't wait for them to be announced/released.

Well I personally wouldn't expect the same price of these if there are indeed two models.

I disagree with the second part though. Human nature aside, you are either going to be one of these guys rooting for the new, bigger phone (cost aside as well) or just sticking with the 4.7 in. Because it is not as big. It will come down to what others have said. Cost, preference, and how you use it. Not if given a free choice all would select the bigger phone.

Little did I know 10 years ago that this would become my life hahaha...

Oh, I'm not saying all.
I am saying a higher percentage that what reading these forums, and the vast rubbishing of a 5.5" model would lead you to believe.

"Oh, you only have the 4.7" model do you"

"I went for the larger 5.5" model, it cost a little more, but I wanted the XXX options the 5.5" model had" Would be possible though process also

I love these rumors. IIRC, this week we read a rumor where the supposed 5.5" iPhone 6 was probably delayed into 2015, only to now read it's starting production some weeks after the supposed 4.7" model.

This is like getting our news from the National Enquirer.

I can't imagine majority of the people on this forum wouldn't mind some XXX options on either model #

So when Cook said "We're gonna see exciting NEW products this year", he meant:
We're gonna see the same, but a bit bigger. Other than that: errrrr...

The new TV Steve spoke about - will it ever happen? A new thunderbolt display? the iWatch? (although this is nothing new, the market is being flooded with these wristbands right now.)
Something really new, meaning something we haven't seen before?

Jim Dalrymple is a hack? When has he ever claimed he was Apple's mouthpiece? I can't remember the last time one of his "nope's" was wrong.

Who hasn't seen a TV before?

I have a high level of expectation that we will see a 5" or 5.5" iPhone,m based not solely on one single news report but the body of rumors and news leaks.

I'm not saying its a lock, but I think signs are point more to a 5.5" iPhone then not.
I think there has been enough cumalative rumors and reports (FWIW) that would point toward a 5.5 inch model.

So should a 13" MBA be the same price as the 11" inch? All indications are iPad Air outsells the retina mini even though it's more expensive. Sure there are people who buy solely based on price. But I would bet most people are buying based on needs and preferences. Also, what other company sells different sized phones/tablets/computers for the exact same price?

Sure it's possible. But I don't think this report is proof of it any more than any other report. Just a few days ago the rumor sites were all over Ming Chi Kuo's "report" that the 5.5" model was pushed to 2015. Now Reuters says production is starting in August. We had rumors that Apple was having battery issues then this week we get another rumor that these issues have apparently been solved. It's silly season right now where it seems every other day there's another iPhone rumor that comes out often times contradicting a previous rumor. It's all just noise right now.

Am I the only one on earth that doesn't believe apple will make a 5.5 inch iPhone?? I just don't see it..

You're not. if the 5.5 was real we would have seen at least ONE part leaked, just one. But that didn't happen.

Even if it's to happen,it wouldn't make sense for Apple to release it so soon after the 4.7, it would canibalize sales. If they are to pull a Samsung, they will release it on a completely different cycle, say April or so

While I don't care if they release both at the same time, or announce the 5.5 with a 1 month delay, I kind of hope that the 4.7 is the 'wallflower' like the 5c was when dually announced. That would mean more 4.7 availability for ME as I consider it perfect size with other 5+" 'phablets' on the market too large.

Early availability has become critical for me as leave for Europe on Oct 4th. Was planning on waiting until my return to make the switch from my POS LG2 until I learned a gotcha detail of TMobile's international plan. Apparently their free data and text only applies to the phone and NOT if you use the phone to create a hotspot. Gotcha! Was planning to use the phone hotspot to power the iPad (non-cellular version) with various apps - translator, maps/walking tours, etc. The irony is, the phone with those same apps would work.

Actually, I ended up getting that LG as the 5s never in inventory with demand creating extended delays. 5c was available with $99 up front or the LG with $0 upfront. Didn't want out of pocket when intended to Jump in 6 mo to the 5s. However, at 6 mo, while eligible, they changed the criteria that future Jumps were 1 year - impacting projected launch of the rumored 6, so held off.
