The backgrounding does seem to have some considerable downsides. However, with the new fast switching support, using push notifications works pretty well. No more waiting for the app to load every time a call comes in.

I'm sure. However our SIP server is a private server inside our Intranet. We can't use a Push server. Also, given how unreliable Push servers have been for me in other apps, I can't say I'd want to rely on one to get phone calls.

Yeah, that's understandable.

An update to my problems with the push not working with PBXes virtual pbx. Seems there was some kind of minor incompatibility that Acrobits will be fixing at their end (though it wasn't really their "problem" so to speak). Acrobits email support was fast and very responsive indeed.

And just fyi, some good news:

http://www.acrobits.cz/2010/01/acrobits-softphone-now-works-on-3g/

Acrobits now works over 3G with no app update needed. I just placed an international call using Acrobits over 3G via PBXes and the call quality was great.

Just a happy customer....

I too purchased Acrobits (for use with pbxes.org) without fully knowing if it'd work. :) Do you have any hints on the settings? There are a lot of configuration options I don't fully understand yet. Sometimes I don't recieve call notifications and sometimes people can't hear me, though I can hear them. Also, I can only recieve calls, not make them. Should I have different outbound proxy settings? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Any chance that I can retrieve in Groundwire the G729 codec I bought on Acrobits Softphone ?

I tried with Peoplefone app and it didn't work.

An other question, have you planned to add dialing rules in Acrobits Softphone anytime soon ? Would be awesome that the app select the right VOIP provider or GSM based on dialing rules and exceptions, so no need to select the right provider before calling a contact.

Groundwire Sale, August 30th and 31st!!!

You'll need to purchase G.729 again for Groundwire, the licensing for the codec requires it since it is a separate client. But Groundwire is on sale today and tomorrow for only $2.99, 75% off. For the same period (August 30th and 31st), you can get the codec for 50% off, only $4.99.

We already have a number rewriting tool that will do this. Go to the advanced settings for the applicable account, then tap on number rewriting. Create the proper 'condition' depending on which contacts you want to use the account. For action, select 'override dial-out account'. You can create as many rules as you need, they will be followed in descending order.

What is going to happen to Acrobits softphone in the future?

It's a great deal, I just upgraded to the Groundwire (I don't really like the name, but other than that, seems really good). Would be nice if all Acrobits users could somehow be warned about this sale, it's a little hard to dig through forums or the announcements on your site. Anyway, thank you for organizing this sale!

Just upgraded myself. So far so good.
Call waiting is a blessing.
It seems voicemails can be pushed also, is this the case and how does it work?
Good job Acrobits.

I also upgraded to Groundwire, and bought the G.729 codec. Actually none of my current providers support G.729, but I figured it'd be useful in the future.

A few observations:

1. I find the colours of the keypad a bit light, the colours of e.g. the GSM & SIP buttons in the SIP Softphone were bolder and more saturated. I've played around with the different options but can't seem to get a dark, bold look.

2. I'm using it with Push Notifications. Like the way the SIP softphone works, it seems to register (or check registration) each time you open the app. That's fine I guess, but when you are answering an incoming call it seems to wait until this registration process has completed before answering, I don't understand why. But note this is not something to specific to Groundwire.

3. The record-all-calls function is nice, I guess I'd never used it on the softphone before. But I think it needs to work differently:

- You should be able to see, play & delete recordings from the iphone itself, not just from a desktop web browser. Ideally you'd have a page in the settings showing them.

- From the web browser interface I can't see any way to delete individual recordings. There needs to be a way to do this, or at least a "delete all recordings" button in the settings.

- I tried to view the recordings in iPhone Safari using http://127.0.0.1:6051 and sometimes it would show the recordings page, however even when it did you couldn't play any files. It seemed to pass the link onto Quicktime player which opened up but then got a server error.

To be honest for me I don't really see much difference with the original softphone, I won't use transfers, waiting, etc. But I was happy to contribute to the ongoing effort, appreciate the sale price, and hope to see improvements in Groundwire soon.

My main wish is for some way to improve the answering of incoming calls, though I realise a lot is due to limitations imposed by Apple.

Groundwire Sale extended!!!

Due to customer demand, we have extended the sale on Groundwire through Wednesday, September 1st. Only one more day to get this great price. Only $2.99 for Groundwire and $4.99 for the G.729 add on.

So now that Google Voice is allowed, I hope Groundwire could reimplement it. I thought GV had been included in Acrobits, or was going to be, but had to be removed to comply with Apple. Any work in that area? It would be pretty disappointing for Acrobits to miss the opportunity.

GoogleVoice is back!!!

GoogleVoice is now supported and fully integrated with Acrobits Softphone and Groundwire!!! Dial out with a single tap through contacts, history or Quickdial. No more stumbling between multiple applications or web interfaces when making calls through GoogleVoice. Do it all with one of Acrobits' amazing SIP Clients.

It's already back. If you go to add an account, you will see GoogleVoice in the list of preconfigured providers. For callback number name, be sure to use the name the line has in GoogleVoice, not Acrobits Softphone.

How does push voicemail work?

We're still testing this feature, but it should work just like other push notifications. When you have new voicemail messages, you should receive a push notification. But this feature will only work if your provider supports the method we use for checking for messages. If your provider supports it, you should already be getting notified of new messages when Groundwire is open in the foreground.

P.S. For other users reading this post, it's important to note this feature is only available in Groundwire, not Acrobits Softphone.

Will you guys be able to add push sms and client side forwarding?

I have been using google voice with sipgate.com but sipgate doesn't have free forwarding and their voicemail is weak compared to google voice...

Well, sip1.vif.com does have a voicemail to email forwarding scheme that works rather well although I haven't been able to recieve push notifications so far...

Any chance that you can setup multiple registrations so that we can log into both Gizmo or Sipgate (or any other VOIP) and Google Voice at the same time? That way I can receive all calls from anyone calling my Google voice number since it forwards to my VOIP, plus make calls directly from the app. In other words, it would be neat if we could register a service for receiving calls independently from a registered service for placing calls. Gizmo for receiving, Google Voice for placing the calls.

That's exactly how I have my Groundwire accounts set up. Google Voice for dialing out. Gizmo for incoming.

Replying to myself here... Not sure why I didn't see it before but there is all this functionality and more via the history page - you can play, delete, etc recordings, it works great.

SMS is something we hope to add eventually, but we don't have a timeline yet. We also hope to add support for other GoogleVoice features eventually.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the request, you can already do this. I keep many accounts registered simultaneously. Gizmo5, sipgate, voipcheap, etc. I even have two separate GoogleVoice entries, one that dials out using my Gizmo5 account, one that dials out using my sipgate account. Acrobits Softphone has supported multiple registrations for quite a while.

Acrobits Softphone 4.3 now available on the App Store.

The latest update to Acrobits Softphone is now availabe ancontains the following additions.

  • high res graphics for iPhone 4
  • new ringtones
  • automatic WiFi/3G handover if network changes during a call (if call re-negotiation is supported by SIP proxy, works well with Asterisk)
  • bug fix: bluetooth support on iPhone 2G now working
  • configurable behavior for situations when the VoIP call is interrupted by GSM call
