Don't have to wait for crappy apps; plenty there right now in real native code.
Exactly. There are a number of apps I have used that crash regularly, have insane load times, poor streaming and general glitchiness. You're going to get crappy apps no matter what developer tool they use. But with so many apps in the market, the crappy apps are going to be the ones that fall to the way side while the quality ones rise to the top. It was a really good move on Apple's part to open up to developer tools with restrictions, because there are other compilers or tools besides Flash that can be of real benefit to developers and a blanket prohibiton of them benefited nobody. As for the Flash compiler, if it's as crappy as people say, then its unlikely to be around long as people will move to a better development solution when their apps aren't successful because they are crap.

while others are complaining about poor designed games that will be released based on flash, this is great news for myself. Flash was the only reason why I've never bought an ipad.

The reason why I'd buy an ipad is to watch flash based TV from where I live. Read illicoweb and tou.tv here

Sorry boss - you're going to be disappointed. The Flash plug-in is not coming to iOS, I suggest you send an email to the sites you mention asking them to develop their site for those without flash, which any professional developer should do anyway.

Why? Because Apple put the spotlight on how poor flash is. Adobe needs to make it better or drop it.

Nope, Apple entered into a very public argument which has damaged both companies. And Adobe have improved and continued to update the flash plug in. Any issues with 10.1 with hardware acceleration turned on? None here, just a bit slow on Safari...

I hate the performance of sites that use flash. I was on the NFL site last week and it was so slow to load the flash portions of the site. It reminding me of how surfing the web was 10 years ago.

It's not about the software, it's about the development, there are some stunning flash based sites out there which are extremely quick loading and could not have their functionality replicated using jquery/html or other coding technologies that don't use a proprietary plug-in.

Thats true to an extent. Adobe needs to tighten it up so that programmers cannot compile crappy code so easily.

I can't stand websites that use flash and do not offer a non-flash version. Its poor etiquette. Its like not offering text only email options.

Yep. Apple put the spotlight on Adobe. Adobe needs to make flash a better program if it wants to keep it around or let it die. Flash is old and stale. The ball is in Adobe's court now. In the end, Adobe should thank Apple.

The great thing about Flash is that it allows for non-professional programmers to make great stuff.

The same way iPhoto allows for non-pro photographers to make nice photos.

The same way that iMovie allows for consumers to make decent movies.

Sure, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro allow for way better photos and videos. But the average consumer can't do anything with that.

If you're a pro and you know how to do HTML5 effectively, then fine, do it. But many people don't know how to program because they are not programmers, simple as that. They can still make something quite complex by themselves with Flash.

Thanks to Flash, I can create my own website, which allows me to update it whenever I want, without paying a developer who takes arbitrary decisions. I'm a photographer, and I don't have the energy or time to learn to program a proper website. When I'll be rich and famous, I'll employ a web developer.

Until then, I hope that Flash will stay what it is today and that I can easily keep making my own website.

must be an OS X thing. took me a few seconds on my virtual Windows 7 instance

Poorly edited photos use no more resources to display than award winning photos of the same size. I hear what you are saying but its not exactly the same.

Do you also offer a non-flash version of your site for people who want a choice?

The NFL site has been buggy. Most likely high traffic. The performance issues of flash on NFL appear on the score board at the top. The site loads quickly but the flash portion is slow.

Funny how the non-flash portion loads quickly in high traffic but the flash is buggy.

It is not an OSX vs. windows thing, no matter what your one visit to the site did for you. The NFL site was all up in a second. The bar at the top with flash had a delay. Go there today and its not happening like it did last night.

I really hope there is a way for you to tell if an app is written in Flash, or any other language besides the usual Objective-C for that matter. Not only are they surely going to kill the battery life and run terribly (Flash, after all) but when OS updates come out, who knows how Flash-based apps will run. I really don't understand why Apple would open the floodgates like this. As if there aren't enough crappy apps.

Looking through thousands of poorly edited photos could be considered a waste of time when you're looking for a good picture, but then you could argue that no one is forced to look at them. The same way, no one is forced to look at Flash content.

And no I do not have a non-flash version of my site, as I've said, I'm not good at coding and I don't know how to do it. I would love to have an HTML5 website, but I just can't go into learning that at the moment. Flash has a great IDE that allows for doing things visually. If a similar IDE would exist to visually create HTML5 content with ease, I would love it.

Of course you would need a labeled way to tell since their is no other way you would be able to tell. I guarantee 100% you have no idea which apps are flash ti iphone compiled and you never will. You have no real idea if they would drain the battery other than the master (without any proof) told you so and the apple zealots recycle his talking points like a preacher recites the bible. Of course enjoyment of an app is 100% based on whether it is at all related to adobe, rather than the app itself.

PS. please learn what this topic is actually about instead of mindlessly bashing flash.

That's because nobody is using HTML5, Mr Ignorant. It's not even a real standard, yet, and most browsers are not fully compatible with it. You HTML5 fanboys are worshipping something that is not even on the market.

No kidding. How ridiculous do you have to be to think that ads are actually going to stop?

I have a droid on 2.2 and I installed Flash 10.1 and it lasted for about 10 minutes before I uninstalled it. It was bad and I mean really laggy slow and bad. Flash needs to be sent to the chopping block...

So is apple feeling Android's compition by loosening this constraint? And what will happen to the Hypercard app any word on that?
While it's true that the last official word on HyperCard was when Steve Jobs said at CAUSE '98 that rumors of its demise were "bull $ h * t" they pretty much killed it off more than a decade ago.

How could something dead for so long come into play in the mobile space?

that's why steve and google love html5, no way to block ads

the cell phone market is like a reboot of the PC market. instead of ads being an add on that you can block. Apple and Google are integrating advertising into their mobile OS's and pushing open standards that don't allow you the ability to block ads

i think of this as the Great Technological Reboot, the corporations are throwing out the old open standards and pushing the new advertising integrated products. for anyone who's ever heard of Elliott Wave theory you can think of this as an ABC corrective wave we are living through.

It's not compliant with the American Dental Association? ;)

On the mac.

And I suppose it also sucks on Android, but then you can choose to activate it, or choose to install it or not. Remember that?

FYI, ADA is Americans with Disabilities Act, to be compliant, working with a screen reader or the other Accessibility options that the platform provides would be a good thing.

Also, Flash video is a resource hog on every platform I've seen, take a look at your CPU usage next time you're watching something on Hulu. They can offload some of that processing to the GPU now, but it still stresses the CPU constantly, which kills battery. I agree though, if there was an option to click and play a Flash ad, then that would be just fine on the iPhone.

money

if it costs too much to develop iPhone apps then developers will just develop for Android first and maybe only Android

you can repeat apple's lazy dev nonsense all you want, but developers have to be paid. and every day you are coding an app that isn't released is revenue that isn't being earned and money that is going out the door in costs.

But looking at a particular photo vs. a good one takes the same amount of resources and time. And looking through 1000 photos for one is the same whether the photos have been edited properly or not. Not you could argue organizing the photos in the database is something. But the program that allows you to do this is stable and of good quality.

Going to a web site with poor flash performance, when a non-flash version does not exist, is annoying.

I generally ignore the "no one makes you do this" argument.
