Alleged First Look at Apple Watch X / Series 10 With 2-Inch Display

I’m aware that there is only so much industrial design changes that can be made to a product that ain’t broke.

That said, what ever happened to Apple’s sense of aesthetic exploration? One of the things that drew me to this company was their ability to shake things up with their hardware designs.

Wasn’t always for the best. But they consistently went in new directions and tried new things with their hardware designs.

That was exciting. It represented a kind of curiosity about what they were doing.

I refuse to believe that all of their products have reached peak industrial design. Yet the iPad has looked the same since 2018. The iPhone since 2020. The watch since its introduction.

Why not shake things up? I sense a lack of inspiration regarding their current hardware design.

Why waste money and risk turning off developers? Designing apps for new shapes and sizes isn't appealing if it doesn't make sense. Change for the sake of change is a bad thing. Kinda reminds me of Microsoft OSes where they move settings around each year just for the hell of it. Also, you just got a new design in Apple Watch Ultra and that is not enough for you?

It's incredible how many times Apple will sell the same thing to people every year, and they still buy it.

Not me
They've successfully kept my wallet in my pocket for several years running now

I'm honestly blown away they don't get more criticism for how little they are actually accomplishing, across nearly all the product lines

Looks like just a “stretched” design, not really a “re-design”, and looks like the same band attachment…
AW sketches and renders have not really been accurate in the last, remember Prosser?

If the battery life takes it closer to the ultra but at a lower price, then I'm on board. I just did a battery replacement on my S6 and even at 100% life, a 2 hour workout with bluetooth and music/podcast streaming is pushing it.

I am not going to lie, i am rather disappointed. I wanted a big change just as iPhone X was.

I thought this might get me excited for the Apple Watch again but does not seem like that’ll happen for a while.

The watch really does not need a yearly release cycle.
What do you think… 2 or 3 years?

Design changes seem close to around every 3 years so far. That makes me think this render is wrong. A milestone model number like Series 10/X begs (IMHO) for a refresh.

no one wears an apple watch anymore except for workouts. lean into the workouts. make the normal watch like the pro with longer battery, more rugged design etc.

They need a whole rethink of the priorities if they want to capture much more of the fitness market at this point.

It hits a point where a Garmin or Coros, etc does basically everything better for the fitness focused (battery life very notably, but more buttons and a consistent UI+buttons/interactions that work in all situations easily).

The AW line could use a true divergence with 2-4 real options

I say "real", because they need to have actually focused products in this space ... not just such generalist approaches that "do everything" and are basically the same device over and over again and don't make any real design choices and tradeoffs to better optimize for niches

Apple has incredible talent in selling their stuff - although the keynotes are now very much about speeds and feeds (which Steve was vehemently opposed to), the reality distortion field seems to still be alive and well for many.

What other company could make the notch bigger on their phones, and put it inside the display itself rather than the edge, and people would not only be not disappointed - they'd actually be excited for it?

"Dynamic" though...
Innovation in action over at the mothership

Here we go with another season of Apple's tutti-frutti, phoney-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll PR "leaks." Get ready for the upcoming leaks of "last-minute" design changes, to hype Apple's "bleeding edge" approach.

The truth is this Apple Watch design has been locked-in for a long while now.

Looks like my Series 9
And my Series 8
And my Series 4
Isn’t that the point?

Exactly. And as someone who’s owned an Ultra since it launched, I can only commend Apple on a great product. The only thing I’d want is newer battery tech so it could go longer without a charge. And… If at all possible someday finding ways to make the screens properly responsive when wet.

Wow you mean they put in a thermometer, reprogrammed the accelerometer to detect a crash and called it a new model? Amazing innovation!

What amazes you (or not) is entirely besides the point. You said there were no new features and you were flat out wrong.

Also, this is a tiny wrist computer. I for one am still amazed by its feature richness every single day.

My favorite "leaks" are things that are coming in "2-3 years"

"Please, pretty please, just keep sticking with us!"

What developers exactly? There are like 5 apps for the watch.

How about an AW: Fitness

Pare down what it does to the key things and hyper optimize the OS and add buttons and create an interaction layout that is logical, consistent and easily workable in all usage conditions....and go ALL IN on battery life

And the ones that exist are terrible. Pocket Casts is inconsistent, Tidal straight up does not work, others don't sync in the background, it's a little ridiculous.

It's great that there's apps, not so much if they're not any good.

Last time I tried an AW I simply wanted to use it as a wrist based iPod Shuffle ... and I seemed to have no control over the quality of music being synced over (which also was oddly weird to accomplish)

Is that still true?

I just remember thinking ... why is this so hard to do?

My Shuffles I plug in, pick my quality and list and off it goes and it's done pretty quickly

Perhaps even more than tablets, Apple absolutely dominates the smart watch market:

Why would any business go out of its way to impress consumers with a cutting-edge products when competitors are still struggling?

When Apple software-blocks all competitors from integrating their smart watch products into iOS on the same level as Watch?

I'd be very surprised if the upcoming 2024 Watch line-up offers a lot of upgrades to any of the models.

Best case scenario, I expect Series 10 to be as much of an upgrade to Series 9 as Series 4 was to Series 3:

Big upgrade for Watch fans in almost every way. But not anything completely new and not a "complete overhaul" even if the exterior and display will feel larger and more refined.
