It's called marketing - they already have the tech for under-screen, etc but Apple will always milk it every year with tech i.e the notch gets smaller and smaller so people carry on buying each year that new thing! so then this new pill becomes the new thing for 2 years then the under-screen camera will be introduced..
It’s not marketing, it’s development of new technologies, which require multiple iterations and in many cases the creation of other entirely new technologies and processes in order for something to be consumer-ready. Under screen cameras are not currently ready for mass consumer use - have you seen the terrible results on those devices that are trying to make it work currently? Apple can’t launch something like that without making millions of people angry. It’s going to take years of development before it’s ready for iPhone use, even if some brands are willing to put an inferior product on the market today.

And Apple is no different than any other product manufacturer, where annual updates drive sales. Car companies do it too, as do food brands, mattress manufacturers, sporting goods companies, clothing companies, etc. So in your mind, all these companies are holding back new and novel features every year, just so they can offer it up the next year, in some grand scheme to empty our wallets.

No chance ever because it would cut into the screen space under the notch they wouldn’t do that or apps would need to be updated

I like this larger pill and hole combo. It is also an “i“.

With this configuration the selfie camera can be #1. ?

Does not bother me, I wont be upgrading this year my 13 Pro is more than good enough. I really dont like the new look and also if the cameras are not being shrunk possibly to the deterrent of the camera, that is one thick phone. Also odd that Apple did all that work to make the face ID components smaller to then change design yet again in one year with the extra pixels above being totally useless. I bet the 14 looks the same as its the last run of this design if we go buy Apples 3 year cycle I think Apple are making their phones internals cheaper to keep profit as manufacturing costs rise. Also though if this is the last year of Apple using Qualcomm modems, maybe I should update. I dont want Apple/Intel modems which will take a few years to mature in my iPhone.

Unlike the CPU's modems are a lot harder to make (see intel and 5G modems) especially with Qualcomm holding a massive amount of patents and their modems are built really well but Apple pay a high cost for the best in class. Not fun for the phone being easier to repair either by anyone else but Apple either if its full of Apple only silicon. I think my days of iPhones may sadly be over once they have control of all of their phones to that extent. I would happily forgo the marketing 'premium' bs and get a Fairphone and put Graphene on it.

Also I remember how much round buttons rattled on the iPhone 4 and 4S I hope they don't use the old design or people will go barmy shaking their phones and asking "do your buttons feels loose" on the forums. I also wonder if image stabilisation using the sensor will be dropped in favour of the lens to make things smaller again, just a thought as the bean counters will be trying to maximise profit in a year with sky rocketing power costs and a war in Europe will even hit Apple, maybe not a good year to update after all. Especially in the UK with a 54% rise in energy prices in April and another 20% in October. My bills may be more important than a new shiny consumer badge from Apple anyway.
My 5s rattled like h***. Haha

And Qualcomm isn’t all it’s cracked up to be in my 13 mini. My 11 did just fine with intel, with better battery use, too. I’m not happy with the Qualcomm X65: it was supposed to be this great battery saver, but it seems like s*** actually. (The battery used on 11 between cellular and Wi-Fi had similar use times, but on 13mini there’s a HUGE difference in battery usage between cellular and Wi-Fi.)

yeah, this is not an attractive design. It calls attention to it rather than bends it into the experience.

Now we can finally have a true "i" phone.

Lol!

Wow I really hope this rumor doesn’t come true now. That’s ALL I’m going to think about when I see an “i” shaped cut out. Haha

Please, no. How much more usable screen real estate do you really get with the hole punch design? It's not like you can read text with that area. From a visual standpoint, the notch disappears into the bezel under normal usage conditions; whereas the hole punch design stands out like a sore thumb.?
Maybe Apple has been studying this website about disappearing dots optical illusion.

You’re right. It absolutely is a non-issue and trivial. I mean, how many people have you heard ever complain about the notch outside MacRumors? And this is coming from somebody that has ‘tech’ as a second hobby and I’ve never had that happen. I just remind myself it’s the Internet and leave it at that.
It’ll be a non-issue until the Verge, Forbes, or Tom’s Guide releases a “Apple has a problem” article drawing attention to it. ?

I'd rather have a smaller notch than this design.
It's more elegant to have a shape connected to the top of the phone than 2 holes close to it.

^[…], just a thought as the bean counters will be trying to maximise profit in a year with sky rocketing power costs and a war in Europe will even hit Apple, maybe not a good year to update after all. […]y.
The “bean counter” lowering the apple experience is not a thing, imo. What is a thing, though, is shortages, supply chain disruptions, quality control issues. Apple will raise the price if the bean counter thinks it’s warranted, but the experience shouldn’t be below Apple expectation.

I'm more curious with what they do to the back of the phone. My iPhone 13 Pro is a great phone, but my least favorite feature is the excessive camera bump. It looks funny, like it was glued on -- and it makes the whole device look and feel top heavy. If Apple can really pull off a smooth looking camera array, flush with the back of the phone, I'd love it. I like the round vol. buttons too.

LM*AO!!!!!! So we are to believe the Apple engineers are now getting their 5 year old children to create their schematics? I don't think so. That so-called schematic looked like it was drawn by a total moron with absolutely no talent for professional illustration. If they took such a pathetic illustration to show Tim Apple he would probably fire them on the spot. This is just more fabricated BS by guessers with less sense than a rubber-duck has. ?

An image alleged to be the display schematic for the iPhone 14 Pro series has emerged online, offering us a look at the true size of the pill-shaped and circular cutout design expected to debut on the high-end 2022 iPhones in replacement of the notch.

The image first emerged on Weibo and was later shared by Apple leaker Jon Prosser who claims to have been able to "independently" confirm that the schematic is legitimate and depicts the "likely size" of the pill-shaped and hole-punch cutout. The schematic coincides with rumors that Apple plans to replace the notch on high-end iPhone 14 models with a hole-punch and pill-shaped cutout.

While the schematic coincides with the fundamentals of recent iPhone 14 Pro display rumors suggesting the end of the notch, more minor details defer from information shared by oft-accurate display analyst Ross Young.

Young, who has shared accurate information in the past, shared last month a front iPhone 14 Pro panel that shows a significantly smaller hole-punch and pill-shaped cutout than the one depicted in the schematic. Additionally, Young's information suggests the pill-shaped cutout will be centered with the display, unlike the schematics.

In a related tweet, Young said that the hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts will debut in all models of the 2023 iPhone series, as they're only expected to be featured on the highest-end iPhone 14 variants. The two lower-end iPhone 14 models will feature a notch.

The indication that the 2023 iPhone series will continue to feature some form of display obstruction for the TrueDepth camera system will disappoint customers who were hoping for an under-display system next year. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple plans to place Face ID under the display starting in 2023, implying a full-screen design with no notch or pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts.

The iPhone 14 lineup will include four models, consisting of two 6.1-inch and two 6.7-inch sizes. Alongside the higher-end models featuring a pill-shaped and hole-punch design, the entire lineup is thought to be gaining a significant redesign with thinner camera bumps, circular volume buttons, and a new speaker grill reminiscent of the iPhone 4. It looks so ugly that I prefer the old notch to this design. But I really want a Holepunch, Not this. Hope this rumor is false.

People could have said the same about the notch and 4 years later it’s still here

if Ross young said it’s happening it’s happening
