Love the "Failboat"!

I agree… I think this will be an epic fail. Ugly looking device too if this is it.

Fanboys annoy me, but it's hard to not be a fanboy of the iPhone. I will bash Apple if they add $100 to the iPhone 6 premium, I will be pissed.

I think the iWatch is DUMB, but that's me. In the end, I still will buy an iphone 6 regardless. I also think the aTV is CRAP compared to the Roku3 and even Amazon FireTV, but this Amazon phone is FAIL imo.

I assume like their Fire tablets and just released Fire TV, it’ll be a variant of their current Fire OS 3.0 with some phone UI elements worked in (which of course is a fork of Android, I believe the current F/OS is based off 4.2.x [?] ).

I've got no interest in the potential Amazon smartphone right now. If I could install a custom ROM on it, THEN I would interested. I'm guessing they'll have the bootloader locked down tighter than Uncle Scrooge's purse string.:p So the chance of a custom ROM would be pretty slim.

Then if finally it doesn't have an autostereoscopic screen, it is not really interesting.

Form factor is not too astounding, but it doesn't have to be, it still has to fit in pockets.

They're banking hard on the 3D effect, I hope it works well and pushes the industry forward.

I wonder if it will have trouble when you accidentally cover the cameras while you're just holding the phone or texting.

So many people being negative for the sake of it.

Competition is good. Apple was once new to the smartphone arena. Apple was once new to the mp3 player arena. Apple was once new to the tablet arena.

I can imagine nearly all the same negativeness was leveraged at Apple years ago when it said it was going to bring out a smartphone.

Obviously Amazon have conducted research and there is a place in the market for them.

Agree with the last few posts. Before everybody throws dung at this effort let's wait and see how it turns out. Perhaps Amazon has come up with innovative ways to use 3D to enhance our experiences that none of us can currently imagine. I'm sure if somebody would have said touch screen in 2005 it would have had the same reaction.

The same people writing this product off before anybody has even seen it are probably the people who have been yelling at Apple to innovate and come up with something new "like they did with the iPhone".

Do I think I'll get this phone? Probably not. Am I hopeful that Amazon will introduce something that moves the smartphone industry forward in ways I can't imagine? Absolutely.

Most markets can only support 3 vendors at the most.
Android has over 75% of the market. IOs and Windows Phone have the remainder. Blackberry, Nokia and Motorola have been displaced. Amazon will really have an uphill climb. It's almost like throwing their money away.

75% of what Market?

3D makes me sick. I'll be skipping this one. :p

Imagine all the 3D D pictures the dudes will be sending the ladies with their totally awesome Amazon phone!

Huh, really? Unless you're referring to the old Blackberries, I'm pretty sure Apple led the way for actual touchscreen smartphones to enter the market in 2007. BTW, iPhone has been the standard model copied by all of the other manufacturer's since. So not sure what you're trying to say

What am trying to say is that Smartphones existed since late 90's or even before ( smartphone definition: A smartphone, or smart phone, is a mobile phone with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than basic feature phones) and how smart they really were is another type of discussion. Yes, Apple changed the entire concept of the smartphone on 2007 and that's precisely my point. Being late on the game doesn't mean anything if what you bring to the table is a game changer (like iPhone was on 2007)

I'm pretty sure most of us who've "experienced" 3D have already attested to the fact that we're neither impressed nor interested.

You know, there are a ton of 3D enthusiasts out there - most of us with 3D enabled TV's (anyone who bought a mid to high end TV in the last couple of years) would gladly continue to support it.

Amazon tablet market share: 7.6%

Except for reviews ON Amazon.com, I see mostly reviews like this:
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/04/amazon-fire-tv-misses-the-same-marks-as-ouya-other-media-boxes/

The Fire TV is a good competitor to Apple TV, but by no means 'better'. And 'much better' - sure, right. lol

Of course, Amazon had to use the courts to battle Apple in the ebook store - they couldn't compete.

I just SAW the device at the top of this article.

Epic Fail post.

Ouch!

You just busted his bubble with facts!

The big "sell" here might not be the phone at all. It might be some partnership deal with the carriers. This a little more outside the box. Amazon already sells phones on various networks. Perhaps they're going to disrupt (as best they can) that part of the industry instead of on the hardware side.

Apple really needs 3D considering iOS7 was built for 3D on a 2D phone... it just doesn't work.

Some possibilities:

1. One camera needed to utilize eyeglass-less 3D screen: this is already available on some laptops and high end displays. The tech has been there for years.

2. 2 or more cameras for sensing where your fingers are for browsing web pages, in 3D

3. search through stacked web pages, etc in 3D has been a topic in IT for some time...perhaps the end game is that and it would make sense.

4. Some movies do work well in 3D and I can see the marketing point there.

5.Perhaps 3D FaceTime or Skype like conferencing. gimmick but cool for families

6. 3D selfies, movies etc.

7. Err...annoying pop up 3D ads...

8.Real 3D maps would be a cool advantage.

9. OR, you get a 3D real image of that Amazon drone delivering to your home...so that it doesn't hit you in the head ;)

It's dreadful looking and the 3D...? Does the phone come with free 3D glasses as well? 3D TV's never really took off what makes them think this will put up a good fight against other already established smart phone brands?

Of course, Amazon had to use the courts to battle Apple in the ebook store - they couldn't compete.

Apple couldn't/didn't want to compete so they conspired with various book publishers to set prices. The DOJ and a bunch of U.S. states later sued Apple and said book publishers for anti-trust violations. The only role Amazon played was being the party 'ganged up on' by the conspirators.
