Except for reviews ON Amazon.com, I see mostly reviews like this:
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/04/amazon-fire-tv-misses-the-same-marks-as-ouya-other-media-boxes/

The Fire TV is a good competitor to Apple TV, but by no means 'better'. And 'much better' - sure, right. lol

Reviews are all very sunjective in regards to who is carrying the review out.

Look at The Verge - They gave Apple TV 7.8/10 and gave Amazon TV 8.8/10

Of course, Amazon had to use the courts to battle Apple in the ebook store - they couldn't compete.

So its ok for Apple to break the law by fixing prices etc?

I just SAW the device at the top of this article.

I think its quite difficult to judge the look of the phone considering its inside a case for that very reason. Lets wait until June when its launched and see the proper pictures of it.

Epic Fail post.

Quite.

Amazon has had significant market share in the tablet market.

The FireTV is getting great reviews and is a much better device than Apple TV

Apple can only wish they replicate Amazon's kindle ebook store success.

So... don't write Amazon off yet, you haven't seen the device yet.

Amazon: Known for books, kindle, unparalled box-shifting throughput and remotely removing goods YOU paid for, without notice or refund.

Apple: Legendary for changing the entire computer AND mobile industry, year after year, still continuing...

I know who I trust, and it's not the "me too" warehouse.

I find my tan is sunjective :p

The biggest differentiator between Amazon's smartphone and those from Apple and Samsung is a 3D feature, which allegedly uses up to 4 cameras and additional sensors embedded in the phone.

People are gonna love that 2 hour battery life.

People are so childish on these forums it's pathetic. Look at the 'top rated' comments; the bar is set so very low. Samsung copies Apple, so people grab their pitchforks and berate them. Amazon constantly innovates with features Apple doesn't have, so people grab their pitchforks and berate them. If you don't like the feature (before you've seen, touched, or tried it), fine. But grow up.

I just called Amazon's PR agency, and they emailed me this image of the dev team:

HTC did the whole 3D phone a few years ago with the EVO3D. I had one... and I hated it. While it was "cool" to show off a few photos to your friends, that's where the fun ended. Looking at the phone in 3D was just painful... literally. More than half of the people you would show your phone to would turn away because the small screen with the 3D effect strained your eyes. And while it looked cool (minus the strain) on the phone, you couldn't share it with anyone else. A month into purchasing it, the 3D setting got turned off and I reverted to a traditional experience. The EVO3D disappeared quickly and not many other vendors wanted to catch up with the technology. I find it amazing that Amazon would want to try it again.

Macrumors replies are so predictable. The first couple pages are filled posts from the fanbois who live for macrumors. They hate on everything not made by or for Apple.

Sharp corners not so good in pockets or purses. It doesn't look comfortable to hold. I'm definitely not digging it from a visual perspective.

I know it's pathetic

You know, I come here because I love Apple, but sometimes I'm shocked by how reactionary or dismissive people can be of anything that is a potential threat or competitor.

First of all, regarding the appearance, as a couple people have pointed out, the article clearly states: "partially hidden inside a case."

Second, the phone might be late in the game, but if Amazon offers it at an obscenely low price to undercut all their competitors figuring they'll make the money back on content - as is their strategy with the Fire tablet - then guess what? It will be a potentially huge success and a threat to every other smartphone maker out there.

On the OTHER hand- if they don't or can't offer it for a blow-away price, then I absolutely agree with most of the comments... it's more likely to be alone the lines of Windows Phone in terms of its reach. (And maybe not even that.)

I really think the success or failure of this phone will have little to do with the 3D effect, or how sexy or unsexy the phone looks. It's going to be ALL about the price.

So basically this will be a phone that uses cameras to track everything you do. I guess if you're way into the Amazon ecosystem it might be attractive.

I was really hoping this would be a joke.

Competition is good, but this isn't competition......

Seriously though, this thing looks to have a 2011 expiration date on it.

+1 for the expiration date.

Where's the fun in 'grow up'?

Anyone can come up with similar sayings depending whether they are pro or anti.

However, How have Apple changed the computer and mobile industry year after year?

I'll give you they accelerated the mobile industry into what we know today, but how has the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5c and 5s changed the mobile industry each year?

Its all very well and good coming out with these "soundbites", but please substantiate them.

Trying to fool the human body into believing anything is something it's clearly not is a fools errand and always ends in failure.

Even the best three dimensional, rides with immersive tech still make you feel sick.

Amazon will just throw money at it and force their way into the market. This is seriously spec crippled considering it needs to survive in an android market place for a whole year and it hasn't even been announced.

We'll see but I strongly suggest avoiding.

Same could be said for the iPhone 4, 4s , 5 and 5c. They didnt introduce anything extra that wasnt already available in other phones on the market.

Ive left the 5S out because they re-introduced the fingerprint scanner. However, same could be said for the Amazon phone depending how successful they are with the 3D capabilities.

I have very little investment in Amazon, and I'm not saying you should buy this phone, all what I'm saying -which many people are missing- is wait, do not write them off before even seeing the product, they have had success before. But apparently anyone having success other than Apple is a no-no.

I love the comments about how "ugly this device looks"

It's very clear that most people making this comment have no clue how a LOT of device manufacturers do a lot of their testing on devices made into cases that in no way resemble anything even close to final production.

The reason for this is several fold. sometimes it's to attempt to avoid leaks. You can't leak what the phone looks like if you haven't actually made the parts yet for the final version.

Often, when they're developing new technology, especially at the OS or screen level, they don't care what the device looks like. They just put a "box" around it and continue to work on the main focus of the device. IN this case, the 3d capability of the screen.

So no, This isn't an "ugly device". it's a box that the screen and phone internals can sit in during testing of those. In fact, its likely possible that since this is early testing, they haven't even put any thought into it

Why does anyone want 3D? Wasn't that a fad that passed in 2010?

Well for movies it works... actually only some movies. The 3DS wasn't such a blockbuster that Nintendo predicted so I'm not sure how Amazon will fare with this phone. 3D is basically still a "gimmick" especially for portable devices and even on games, people complain about long term usage with 3D. Would it be used to say take a photo in 3D? How would that look for phones without 3D? Well at least Amazon is trying SOMETHING. Can't wait for the iPhone 6.

Behold! A phone not made by Apple!

Let the hate commence!

Well what did you expect on MacRumors? I mean really....is it even logical to expect that people werent going to be skeptical of an amazon buying device disguised as a 3d phone?

Don't blame it on Fozzy, he got all his ideas from Mr. Bimbo...

I think this was more tongue in cheek, not to be taken seriously. Relax :).

monthly cost?

to me amazon is about saving money.

E.g. I'm getting ready to dump a $30/month smartphone plan (T-Mobile's 100 minute/unlimited text/5GB of 4G data) for a $20/month (Red Pocket's 300 minutes/unlimited texts/1GB of 3G data - on their beta Verizon page) just to save $10/month.
