I upgrade every year and I am looking forward to the iPhone 7 in September. This phone might shake the market if Apple pull out all the stops. I think the iPhone 7 might be a 'Gradual' upgrade, but this iPhone 8 might be a rarity on Pre-order day.

Damn if you can hold out with an iPhone 4, I could certainly hold out with my 6S plus.... you've inspired me!

A lot of people are making decisions as to whether or not to upgrade based on this rumor. I think we should all hang to our socks for a second and see what actually happens. The iPhone 7 might actually be pretty nice, and there's always the possibility this rumor is wrong. I'm going to wait and see what the iPhone 7 is like, and then I'll decide if it looks worth the money.

Somebody posted in this thread that "Apple is about to shaft a lot of iPhone 7 buyers in 2017". I see nothing wrong with Apple releasing a totally redesigned and awesomely new phone every year. If they come out with a groundbreaking phone in 2017, it won't make the iPhone 7 any worse. It simply may mean that I'll decide to upgrade sooner than I anticipated.

I agree, but the last couple of years these rumors have been spot on... I think starting with the infamous iPhone 4 that the Apple employee lost in a bar we haven't had any surprises by a release.

The 6s was a huge surprise, nobody knew how much the 6s was actually tweaked. Of course, opinions play into this; one person's surprise is another persons meh. That doesn't take away from the upgrade the 6s was over the 6.

Whose making decisions based in rumors? I'm not, why would I decide to spend my money now until I see exactly what I'm getting.

The wireless telegraph was developed in the 1890's. So not hundreds of years.

Also, the amount of power put off my common wireless transmitters such as WiFi is so minuscule by the time it reaches you, you're talking hundredths and thousandths of a watt, is nowhere near enough to charge a device. If you need to have 10-20W reaching your phone wirelessly, that's a LOT of RF and power to push that much energy over the air.
Wifi/microwave radiation is non ionizing and therefore is unable to cause DNA damage. The energy is way to low (thousands of times lower than necessary).

Yawn-

You're asking a lot from Apple who has zero experience with wireless charging except for that stupid watch- and that doesn't even quick charge - Samsung adapter fast wireless charging is already 2nd generation - next year they will have revision 3.0 even faster.

Wireless charging thru the air with your iPhone in your front pocket? Not unless you want cancer in your balls. It sounds cool but I do not have faith in Apple these days to implement anything innovative - perhaps another shade of PINK color for the iPhone, yes.

Apple does have zero experience with wireless charging. Which is why it is highly likely it will be announced/determined in the next year or so that they have partnered with Energous. True, real wireless power. Not inductive, it's over RF. Like wifi. All Apple has to do is embed the small Energous chip. Google them and see for yourself.

Sorry, but if I still have to put my phone on a mat or a dock, the wireless does nothing for me. Except give me an argument on the Internet. I want wireless power to work like wifi or else it's pointless.

Ball cancer? Maybe. But it's going through FCC approval now, so we shall see. I'm sure people were worried about ball cancer when wifi was coming out too :p

Wow another ignorant iPhone fans visiting Apple centric website, hows your iOS? i bet you love your finger print now, and APay did you use it, i hope it's secure. btw, Samsung just released a Rose Gold version, i mean Pink Rose, you don't know? Ask S-Voice it's better than Siri, right?
not even worth retyping.

So everyone should skip 2016 Apple mobile and wait until 2017? Okay. Saves upward of $800.

You're gonna need that extra $200 in 2017.

Sales are going to fall a lot more than 1.8% if the iPhone 7 turns out to be another internal spec bump rather than a new design.

@AliMacs
Apple has future Technology!!
see microled, dual camera (linx),right wireless charging (see patent),VR team

thinnest design in a high end Smartphone. why? Apple need from movie total recall that future mobile phone.

Innovation for all, wireless headset with ultimate sound (hope in the next time),if apple use in iphone 7 without 3,5mm audio plug

see in ipad pro 9.7 first mobile device with support DCI-P3 color. this is from imac 5k

Well crap...now I have to figure out how to make my 5c last until next year!

Ionization isn't the only risk-- heating can cause significant tissue damage as well, which is why the the FCC sets MPE (maximum permissible exposure) limits for devices it regulates. Per the FCC:

"Two areas of the body, the eyes and the testes, are particularly vulnerable to RF heating because of the relative lack of available blood flow to dissipate the excess heat load."

"Ball cancer" may not be the technical term, but there could be a risk of harm if you're focusing many watts of RF energy in areas with low blood flow.

There's the other point that the FCC only allows 4W EIRP in the ISM bands (of which 5.8GHz is one)-- so they can't put more than 4W out of the antenna if they do this by RF, and that's already significantly more than most WiFi. WattUp seems to claim that they've limited power drop to a linear function of distance, which I'm a bit unclear on (I'd expect it to fall of as r^2), but that 4W output is going to degrade quickly. If they can convince the FCC that multiple transmitters aren't coordinated, they can boost their aggregate power, or if they can design a fancy enough synthetic aperture antenna to boost their receive gain they might buy some-- but the device form factor and placement are still going to be a challenge.

In the end, they're going to have a hard time even reaching the 5W that Apple puts out of their little charger, and the 15W iPad charger is a different game entirely.

looks like i am gonna keep my iPhone 6 another year. it runs perfect and just like an iPad theres no need to update every 2 years anymore

Years ago, a lot of people kept their flip phones over two years, despite the reduced upgrade price every two years. I kept my phones about 3 years.

Why did I question the author that said wireless charging is "next generation"? Because it's not.

What's not done right about the current implementation? What differences do you think Apple could possibly make that current wireless charging capable phones can't do now?
There's little real benefit to having to put a phone on a charging pad versus having to stick a plug in. A real wireless charging solution would involve a field that would charge your phone from a distance of 10-20 feet away.

The best implementations I could see for wireless charging would be:
  • Setting your phone/tablet down on your desk and your iMac automatically starts charging it
  • A car charger that automatically starts charging your phone while it's still in your pocket

Apple has been exploring methods of long-distance wireless charging, that would "broadcast" power over a distance of several feet, rather than requiring a mobile device to be placed on a mat. Apple's implementation looks to be far ahead of the competition.

Until you've used a phone with wireless charging, you'll have no idea how convenient it actually is.

This makes absolutely no sense

Why on earth would they make a redesign on an s cycle

Most people I assume will be on the number cycle so that is where they make their money

If not this year, 2018 - 2017 doesn't make sense

And why is it that these comments are always flooded with android fanboys

Go play with your mediocre devices if they're so good

kinda hard to use at the same time tho

You can do what geoff5093 says OR you can get one with a stand (particularly the Samsung fast wireless charging stand) -and you simply do what you would do hands free while charging wireless. It's super convenient to have wireless charging and being able to have adaptive fast charging capabilities EVEN WORK with cases is fabulous. Everyone shouldn't be so quick to dismiss this technology just because Samsung/android is doing it.

Everyone saying the home button will be removed, and its functions "incorporated into the screen" — what exactly does that mean?

How would it work; you touch (or "force-touch") somewhere random on the screen? The screen is full of software elements that already do something when you touch them, whether you're in an app or on the home screen.
