Is it me ... or do some people take this stuff a little TOO seriously?

SHEEESH ... it's a RUMOR SITE!!!! 😀

its called passion and it is what makes Apple, Apple. I find it all entertaining - watching people get jacked off and others passively satisifed...keep it up people!

Mac people are more optimistic when doing something doesn't spell the death of the company to which they are loyal.

Don't kid yourself into thinking that creating Mac OS X for x86 processors is only going to fuel Mac sales. Despite the fact that Mac hardware is superior, 95% of the world doesn't care to spend the extra money to get that extra quality, so the loss in sales of Apple's hardware would more than offset the gain in revenue from Mac OS X. I would even be skeptical if many Wintel people would actually even buy Mac OS X to run on their computer when they've been acquiescent with Windows for so long.

Not only that, but Mac OS X on Macs is extremely reliably precisely because Apple controls the hardware. Releasing it for x86 systems would only be asking for trouble, since the hardware systems are not a constant in the Wintel world, so the reliability of Mac OS X would go down the tubes. And that's not an appearance that Apple would like to have.

So, in short, no, it wasn't really that harsh. It was just reality.

I totally agree that this would not fuel mac sales but I also do not believe it would be the end of Apple. People have been chanting that since 1985. you make great points but doesn't Linux run on just about every processor made (I understand that I am generalizing)? don't you think that the average user would want a pretty interface for a more stable OS? Simx, you and I may just agree to disagree but debate can be fun. There is always a market for this business model. Hell, people used to buy rocks as pets and have you ever seen what people buy at 2 am on a shopping channel?

My harsh statement was for the "let's not and say we did". not the other points, those are completely valid.

Now this would be a huge leap but think about what it would do overnight to Windows.

C'mon people, lets dream big and change the world.

What would it do to Windows? Ummmm ... lets see .... Nothing?

Windows' primary life-sustaining feature is that it Is Windows. In other words, it runs all that crap Big Corp paid big money to some Visual Basic jockey to code seven years ago and is too stingy to recode.

While it is "nice" that you can buy some cheap crap hardware for Windows and build your own PC, that's a far cry from the reason Windows succeeds. The Build-it-Yourself crowd has a smaller percentage of the computing marketplace than Apple does, by a few orders of magnitutde. Why? Because with a factory-built box you get someone to blame, and a warranty that says (so long as you don't dare breathe on the machine) that you can blame the manufacturer when it breaks.

So what influence would OS X running on Intel have?

Not much. A few more OS X copies would be sold. Support costs for OS X would go through the roof. Customer loyalty would plummet.

I'd give about a 50% likelihood that OS X/Intel would continue to exist three years after its debut; 45% likelihood Apple would axe it as a bad idea from the start; 5% likelihood that it would take Apple down with it.

Apple is a "total package" company. They aren't exclusively hardware, although that is their emphasis. Specific divisions target software.

Yes, hardly a "peep" from Apple about the 20th anniversary. This could be very bad news (or lack thereof). I wonder, perhaps Steve Jobs is acting on his one-time advice to "milk the Macintosh for everything its worth" while Apple moved on to the next big thing. Yes, Steve actually said that several years ago at a WWDC conference (before he returned as Apple CEO).

Could Apple's "next big thing" be the iPod and similar MS Windows compatible products? Remember, it was only a few weeks ago that some Apple higher-up (VP?) said that music had become the major focus at Apple (well, perhaps the statement was "a" principal focus rather than "the"). Combine that with the lack of a 20th anniversary announcement and the fact that Apple received more revenue last quarter from the iPod than it did for the iMac and that Apple sold almost as many iPods last quarter as it did Macs and you've got to wonder what the future holds for Apple and the Mac.

The G5 is a very nice product, but Apple needs updates and new products ASAP (speeds well over 2GHz, G5-based PowerBooks and iMacs with the latter giving better price-performance over the current G4s). Frankly, this silence from Apple on the 20th anniversary of the Mac has me worried.

I'm so disappointed in the Non Anniversary Show from Apple.

I used to be a regular with a different handle. So even though it might say newbie, I ain't. This post might even be taken off, but I must say, however much I don't want, TranceClubMusic you must be very lonely and unhappy. It doesn't matter about right or wrong, everything that comes from you is negative. Very sad.😕

I suggest you stop reading Page 2 if wrong rumors bother you so much. Page 2 is a crap-shoot.

The rest was posted with all reasonable caveats "Unfortunately, by this point, there has been very little concrete evidence of the anticipated 20th anniversary updates..."

As for reliability... Appleinsider is the one that said PowerMac updates on or around the 20th of Jan.

I won't get worried yet, but if the speed bumped PowerMacs don't come along by the end of February I'll start to get a bit concerned by then. The alliance with IBM is supposed to mean more frequent and meaningful advances in CPU performance than the stagnation that was the G4 with Moto. Steve himself said we'd see 3GHz G5s by the end of this summer and I'll continue to believe that unless it's proven to be false by that time. As long as Apple maintains that goal he set everything will be just fine.

It's interesting that page one rumors have rarely been completely untrue. Usually some thing like this would be a page-twoer... Or is Apple going to release a new line of machines at 11:59? 😉

There's nothing magic about this being posted on Page 1.

People need to read the actual text of the articles and not just where they are posted.

To paraphrase this article "While this one site says we'll see an update tommorrow, there is little evidence to believe it to be true"

Why is it posted on Page 1? Because everyone is interested in this topic.

With days to go before the kick off of the Pepsi promotion, there is no way Apple would let the Mac steal the show from their main priority. The iPod.
I just saw a small excerpt of a Beyonce Knowles Pepsi commercial being filmed today for exclusive showing in Europe during the Superbowl.
Someday there will be more iPod owners than Mac owners, but I personally find the lack of even a mention on Apple.com about the 24th, shows a great deal of arrogance.

Maybe I just have a hard time with the negative. Why be pessimistic? Why not be positive?

Positive it ain't gonna happen.

Wait a minute -- you're telling me that NOT making a big deal out of a self-aggrandizing event like an anniversary shows arrogance?

Boy, the world really has turned upside down...

Irrational Criticism?

Having read the last 50 or so posts in this amazingly long thread....it strikes me that there is a ton of irrational criticism going on here.

"Apple needs to do this" and "Apple needs to do that" sort of ignores the fact that you can't snap your fingers and create technology. Some folks are acting like Apple isn't releasing updates deliberately to spite Mac users.

Now I don't know Steve Jobs...but I'm guessing that he is not hatching an evil plot to frustrate Mac users everywhere.

New tech comes when new tech comes, with the exceptions being (a) when demand/profits are exceptionally strong for existing products, such that introduction of something new would reduce overall profitability, and (b) when existing inventory is sufficiently high to demand that it be cleared first (again, for long-term profitability purposes).

2) The profanity filter is there for a reason. Do not circumvent it. This is actually becoming my biggest pet peeve.

Not to mention it makes you sound like you have the iq of a garbage can when you swear in a place where people are trying to have a discussion.
Hanging out with the guys, watching the game, swearing up a storm, sure why not. But this is supposed to be atleast a mildly intellectual realm where we discuss ideas.

Don't foget where your came from, apple

All the recent focus of Apple marketing, new products and the whole MWSF fiasco has made me think about Apple's priorities recently. I love my iPod, iTMS is cool (even if there isn't much there for me) and the whole digital hub is fabulous. I'm also very happy that Apple seems to be making money off of music and they've earned a "street cred" cache that can't be bought.

That being said, I'm really beginning to resent it all. It's all iPod, iPod, iPod and the occasional iTunes Music Store plug. It's not why I'm here. It's not why I go to Apple store when I'm at the mall. It's not, in short, what Apple is all about.

Apple makes the coolest computers in each market segment in the world. Sure, they're mroe expensive, but that is because they are better. OS X is streets ahead of any other operating system. The pro apps set the standard in all categories and their iLife step-children allow your average consumer to do wonderful things. However, aside from some G5 commercials last year, I've never seen these products plugged to the mass audience. My friends and family are always highly impressed with everything about my Apple systems, but if it weren't for me, they wouldn't have a clue. The switcher campaign was in the right vein, but here's an idea: SHOW THE FECKIN' COMPUTERS! SHOW THE OS AND HOW COOL IT LOOKS! Don't show me some average joe telling me that Macs are easy and fun, show me the Mac!

OK, I'm gald that Apple's making money with iPod. Milk it for all it is worth while you can. (Maybe that is the lesson they took from the golden 50% market share days.) I'm sure that Steve Jobs is all abuzz, giddy and smitten that he get's to hang around rock stars now. Still, the iPod will fade - fame and popularity with the chatering classes is ALWAYS fleeting. Ask the Burberry people. You need more than one trick to keep "it." In the meantime, just don't leave us regular users in the cold - one day we will be all you have left. And don't underestimate you're product line, celebrate it. Even without upgrades, it's all pretty cool.

For every "ohhh" and "ahhh" that my iPod got, the 17-inch PB got (and continues to get) many, many more.

next rumor please

OK, this anniversary rumor has failed ...

Can we live without rumors? No, NO! We need dreams. Why should we come here otherwise?

So let's start another one asap.

Anyone got a good one to keep us busy for a certain time?

Probability is not required.

Has Apple booked commercial time during the superbowl?

Has Apple booked commercial time during the superbowl?

This would be the date I would expect the 20th anniversary Mac to be released. Since the original Mac was released with a Superbowl commercial it would make sense for the 20th anniversary model to be released on Sunday.
