Don't foget where your came from, apple
All the recent focus of Apple marketing, new products and the whole MWSF fiasco has made me think about Apple's priorities recently. I love my iPod, iTMS is cool (even if there isn't much there for me) and the whole digital hub is fabulous. I'm also very happy that Apple seems to be making money off of music and they've earned a "street cred" cache that can't be bought.
That being said, I'm really beginning to resent it all. It's all iPod, iPod, iPod and the occasional iTunes Music Store plug. It's not why I'm here. It's not why I go to Apple store when I'm at the mall. It's not, in short, what Apple is all about.
Apple makes the coolest computers in each market segment in the world. Sure, they're mroe expensive, but that is because they are better. OS X is streets ahead of any other operating system. The pro apps set the standard in all categories and their iLife step-children allow your average consumer to do wonderful things. However, aside from some G5 commercials last year, I've never seen these products plugged to the mass audience. My friends and family are always highly impressed with everything about my Apple systems, but if it weren't for me, they wouldn't have a clue. The switcher campaign was in the right vein, but here's an idea: SHOW THE FECKIN' COMPUTERS! SHOW THE OS AND HOW COOL IT LOOKS! Don't show me some average joe telling me that Macs are easy and fun, show me the Mac!
OK, I'm gald that Apple's making money with iPod. Milk it for all it is worth while you can. (Maybe that is the lesson they took from the golden 50% market share days.) I'm sure that Steve Jobs is all abuzz, giddy and smitten that he get's to hang around rock stars now. Still, the iPod will fade - fame and popularity with the chatering classes is ALWAYS fleeting. Ask the Burberry people. You need more than one trick to keep "it." In the meantime, just don't leave us regular users in the cold - one day we will be all you have left. And don't underestimate you're product line, celebrate it. Even without upgrades, it's all pretty cool.
For every "ohhh" and "ahhh" that my iPod got, the 17-inch PB got (and continues to get) many, many more.
