The most ill-informed opinion today, it seems. If you actually read enough about Apple (since you claim to like Apple, but it doesn't seem like it), you'll know the #1 hold up for iTunes in Europe is because of the record labels, and not because of Apple.

The chip itself is tweaked for multimedia, sporting new instructions for handling video and audio files, a larger 1MB cache, and faster chip speeds that will start around 3.4 GHz and go to 4 GHz later in the year. Security features designed to thwart attacks will also be enabled with an update of Windows XP coming in the second quarter." http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040127.gtintel0127/BNStory/Technology/

There's a lot of interesting stuff in that article -- everyone should read it. For instance:

Despite the advances, Prescott won't likely address two of the hurdles facing Intel: power consumption and 64-bit computing. The chip, Intel's first on the 90-nanometer process, will consume close to 90 watts to 100 watts, and around 40 watts while idle due to leakage and inadvertent power consumption, said Nathan Brookwood, an analyst at Insight 64. Some notebook chips use less than 40 watts maximum.

Power consumption can put a ceiling on increasing performance over time. Typically, power consumption should decline as chips shrink in size.

"The shrink is not giving them any benefit at comparable frequencies," Mr. Brookwood said. "The thermals on Prescott are a bit higher than anyone anticipated."

Unbelievable. IBM is spoiling us. Now, if only they can spoil us at slightly higher Ghz ratings . . .

Hi,

I'm not sure if this really fits this thread or not...

In Japan, one website says Apple is going to announce something very important, probably this evening.

Just recently it's revised to something important "relating to human resource".

What is it?

iTunes Music Store

Thanks for pointing out "the most ill-informed opinion today". Did you actually read my piece? Sure it's not Apple's fault (entirely) that iTMS is not everywhere ... but my I was doing 2 things, 1) summing up the patent joy of Apple compounded with the disappointment of not being able to use the big marketable features so trumpetted...the iPhoto services outside the US should happen March this year onwards (how long has that taken?)...let us see...the iTMS may well happen in Europe this year (yup, licensing issues I know)....and Sherlock, once a really useful generic search tool is hardly used by anybody outside the US today because it is completely US-centric with a few non-US facilities supplied by third party software writers...how much of this is Apple's fault? UK and France Apple staff have been embarrassed to be unable to show features that citizens of the USA have. And:

2) I was saying that the sheer pleasure that being able to work using Apple hardware and software (like my wonderful Cube, I repeat) is occasionally marred by the odd let down (a 20th anniversary mac would have been soooo nice, it still may happen of course), and the occasional supply and pricing mistake, plus 1) above. But just love the free-ish software, and as a musician I love the idea of Garageband (+ the samples are great) so please, not so much of "....if you read the press...most uninformed blah blah". We're all allowed a LITTLE moan from time to time.

Mini-rant over.

Yeah he keeps on saying that. I'm just wondering if he has some auto-text generator for that or something, because it must really be hard to type without those hands that he had to eat since his last BullSh*t statements.:D

Sure, but it would be nice to actually hear some original moans once in a while, instead of the same ones over and over. And over. And over . . .

it seems the latest rumor is ......

The annoucement of the new revision B. G5 Powermacs has been delayed by the following factor : apparently not enough customers have yet bought up their existing inventories of their current revision A. G5 Powermacs . Too many customers thought the new revision B. G5 Powermacs would be announced at Macworld Expo 2004 and chose to wait to buy them after that. As a result too many of the revision A. G5 Powermacs hsve remained unsold so far. That is one reason why price reductions have recently started on some models . I suspect that soon demand for revision B . Powermacs will be too high and supply of revision B . Powermacs will be too low. That is one reason why they should also introduce a G5 iMac this month too. Not everyone needs to buy a Powermac G5 . Some people can get by with a G5 iMac instead.

I agree. It is a little frustrating for Mac users outside of the US. At least Apple has made it clear that they intend to extend the iPhoto services and ITunes music stores to Europe. Unfortunately no such announcement regarding Australia, and probably highly unlikely as we are probably just too small of a market.

It is a shame though as various windows media based music stores are sprouting up and may undo the good work Apple has done in promoting the iPod (advertising everywhere and often sold out).

I understand the licensing issues being a problem with music, but what I don't understand is why we can't order the iPhoto albums from Apple US. As long as Apple charged the right freight charge how can they be out-of-pocket. Sure this may make it expensive for common use, but I know lots of friends who would all like to order at least one album for various special events, friend's weddings, kids birthdays, etc. As long as Apple charged the right shipping fee what other costs are there?

Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff Apple produces, I just wish that some of the added extras were available to other countries as well.

Good theory. All these rumors slow Apple's sales down and delay their new product releases because inventory on older products is high. Apple's biggest fans doing harm to the company?

Actually, when I said that the rumors sites do more harm than good I was thinking about the visitors to the sites, not Apple itself. I agree with another poster that we rumor maniacs probably have an insufficient impact to alter Apple's product release strategy. On the other hand, we all of us live only one day at a time, and those days (hours minutes seconds) that are wasted by kvetching about no product releases are days (hours minutes seconds) which will be lost to us forever for more productive pursuits.

Just a theory I threw out there. Certainly not enough people read these sites to have a big affect but certainly some.

Hey, Apple updated their home page!

Are you speaking about his totally ridiculous pre-MWSF statement that the iPod mini would cost 249 $...? :p

Europe = continent i.e it has MANY different countries all with different laws, and rules, and governing bodies

U.S. = country with single set of laws, rules and governing bodies

Do you think this is MAYBE why it takes longer for Apple to get things in to the European markets? Besides can you imagine the backlash if Apple released it to one European country before the others? The holy hell that people would raise over that one. I mean seriously.

And do you honestly think that Apple WANTS to not be in these markets? Seriously, the paranoia is staggering sometimes. Just the idea of Steve sitting in his office thinking, hmm how can I piss off people today, ooh I know, by delaying the European iTunes store...

…is occasionally marred by the odd let down (a 20th anniversary mac would have been soooo nice, it still may happen of course)
Good lord, where did ANYONE ever say there was going to be a 20th Anniversary Mac. I remember the utter irritation the last time that happened, the thing cost almost 10 grand! I'd rather that for the anniverssary they spent their time improving their WHOLE product line than putting out some limited edition specialty mac that 99% of us can't afford.

We're all allowed a LITTLE moan from time to time.

You know I sometimes feel like Mac users are a bunch of spoiled brats. Why in the world do people think Apple is only doing one Macworld anymore? Because the huge expectations to produce some amazing fantastic new product on a set schedule was INSANE. If they managed to get it ready in time great, but if not then it was announced but didn't ship till a month later, and then people got pissed about THAT. Seriously there is just NO pleasing people sometimes.

Apple has had an AMAZING turnaround these past few years. Do you remember Amelio's last keynote? 3 HOURS. Now we get a streamlined product line, that is getting better every update. A fast new proccesor, a modern OS that even non Mac heads are praising, a fantastically succesful iPod, great laptop designs, and people still want more. I mean I'm all for not resting on my laurels and improving products, but too expect Apple to do it at our convenience is just ludicrous. I'd love to see (in theory) some of the people who are constantly second guessing steve jobs on these forums in his position. I'd bet you that nearly every one of them would either run the company into the ground in less than a year or get ousted by the BoD. Give the man some credit he's been in the industry for a LONG time. So just sit back, relax, enjoy your Mac (which isn't going to suddenly stop being productive just cause a new one is released) and put things in perspective.

There I'm done with MY rant.

The "security features" are the same CPU serial number that privacy advocates made them take out years ago. And Prescott consumes an amazing 90 to 100 watts - it will take a new generation of cabinets and power supplies to keep the chip from burning up. On top of that, it's only a 32-bit chip anyway.

Athlon64 is the real competition for the G5.

After reading through these posts, looks like, in addition to page 1 and page 2, this site could use a MELEE Threads section!

With all those songs to download from Pepsi, folks'll need a machine to do it with, so why not combine a giveway and a subtle announcement for a new machine to do the downloading with, in other words, sneak that "announcement" into the pepsi add or announce it after the S-Bowl...

Ok, 2 cents spent...

RE: another Day, Another Rumor

My feeling is that Apple will release new products on Superbowl day as millions will log on to get more information about the itunes giveaway. that would be the best way they would have excellent visibility of their new line of products

I don't think so.
The Superbowl is not a "world" event. It's only important to you Americans.
The rest of the world couldn't care less about a bunch of guys that touch a FOOTball with their hands.
If it where soccer, well.......... ;)

Well considering the us Americans are Apple's primary market. And the Superbowl is one of THE most significant advertising events of the year, I don't see how them releasing something around that time wouldn't make sense.

coud it be due to DDR RAM....

well according to a french rumor web site, it could simply be the DDR RAM shortage/speculation that the computer industry is facing, and as a result, there is an increase of the RAM cost...
croquer.free.fr reports today that Apple was missing 75000 DDR RAM modules to launch its new PM G5 revB + Mac Anniversary...
wait and see.

it could be the second option, if the announcement was delay due to any manufacturing problem and could not be made aat the 20th Annivaersary date...
Superbowl seems to be a good occasion for such an announcement

You got something new for the anniversary... the new iLife.

I agree. Apple is a worldwide selling company. And although their home market may be important, seeing things in a global perspective, events like the Superbowl aren't important at all. I'm positive that if apple had anything to announce that doesn't concern only the US market (like the Pepsi give-away) they wouldn't wait for the Superbowl event.

Actually the Superbowl IS a world event, at least the ONE event that is watched by more people in the world at the same time than any other event.

Whether they see the same commercials or not is a different story.

I'm afraid that there won’t be many people following it over here in Europe. Soccer is much more popular in Europe. Most people in Europe don't know anything about american football (me included).

As for the commercials, they will for sure be different. But I believe Apple was only going to show the Pepsi give-away commercial, so that won’t be of interest over here anyway.
