You're right, sorry.

(Keeping up with these threads is becoming a full-time hobby.. 13 pages? Yikes.)

Whether they see the same commercials or not is a different story.

Vienna New Year Concert ?
Soccer World Cup Final ?

american football, baseball are rather unpopular here (i have no idea about baseball ...is there something like superbowl too ?)

in austria skiing is #1 : at last olympics there were 2 millions watching downhill ... seems not very much but there are only 8 millions austrians...

err... actually I believe the World Cup final usually has more worldwide viewers than the SuperBowl. So perhaps we'll have to wait until July 2006 for any upgrades, just to make sure that the most people get to hear about it.

ok...listen to this dilemma. My wife (awesome lady she is) just bought me a 1.6 G5 last week. It's still sitting unopened due to the pending updates. I thought this week for sure but you know how that went. I've got until saturday to return. I can't afford more than the $1799 price tag so i'm wondering if i should return and hope the $1799 price point is there when the updates come or just content that i've got a g5 (upgrading from a b&w g3 300mhz, no less) and move forward. Any advice?

You are very lucky to have such an awesome wife. I agree you should keep the 1.6, after all it's the one that your wife purchased for you. At this point there is no way of knowing when an upgrade might occur. You might as well enjoy the gift, the increased speed will be awesome. ;)

I'm afraid that there won’t be many people following it over here in Europe. Soccer is much more popular in Europe. Most people in Europe don't know anything about american football (me included).

As for the commercials, they will for sure be different. But I believe Apple was only going to show the Pepsi give-away commercial, so that won’t be of interest over here anyway.

Regardless of how popular the SuperBowl is or isn't overseas, it woud still make sense for Apple to announce a product during or after to coincide with the Pepsi/iTunes promotion. Apples primary audience is here in the states. Thats not to say that foreign markets aren't important, but the domestic market here is what Apple has to tap in to first to be succesful. If Apple can't produce in the American market it won't matter what they release overseas because Apple won't be able to be profitable. Believe me, I think it would be great if Europe and Asia and Australia and heck Canada got iTunes and iPhoto books and everything, the more the merrier, but saying that advertising doesn't make sense because non-Americans don't tend to watch it ignores those facts. Not trying to be arrogant or say America is better, just from a buisness stand point it is a more important market.

You know, the 1.8 singles are going for $1750 in an attempt to clear out supply; get one of those instead, if for nothing more than the bigger HD, more ram, PCI-X, etc.

totally agree with that .... but whats the marketing strategy behind making no commercials at all ? (look at the success in japan ...why not doing similar things across the atlantic ? )

Rus,

I think you should take it back. If your wife is the kind of person who would by you a g5, then it seems like she would understand your predicament. I say return it, get the money back and wait a few weeks (maybe only a few days) and your same $1700 will get you a better, faster computer. If you keep it you may end up regreting it-and wish you had waited. . . .

I have to agree, you would hate to pick up a 1.6 when you have shot at 2.0 in a week or two. Or you could go ahead and pick up a single 1.8 with more HD and PCI-X for less than that 1.6. Your wife is awesome, I hope to get a girl like that some day ;), but mind as well get the most bang for your buck.

Nah, who would think like that?

There is no real answer to that question and you know it. The thing is - it could be 1 week or 5 month until the next update comes. No one really knows. Just remember the long time waiting for the updated PB 15".

I have decided for myself that I will never ever again wait too long for an updated product. Of course I wait if its 1 week before any special event like the superbowl or Macworld.

But why not return it today and if nothing new comes up until next tuesday get the same machine again ?

How ironic that Mac 20th was quietly forgotten, so it wouldn't take stage over Apples announcement to help sell 300 million bottles of sugar water.

Being a new mac user myself (I just bought my first apple ever, the 1.25GHz 15" Albook), I have been continually amazed by the enthusiasm and devotion of fans of mac products, across the board. Though i too question at times whether the continual anticipation of new products by these devoted consumers actually hurt the product economics of Apple as a company.....also, why is that no one would sit around all day and speculate rumors about new chip release from intel and hold off purchases in view of faster processors???

You know, I probably should have pointed this out earlier but Steve did say this was going to be a great anniversary YEAR. Ok everyone, deep breaths now.

I would agree - nothing lost if you take it back and they don't announce anything - you just pick it up again. But if they do offer, say, a Dual 1.8 at the same cost, you've made a sweet exchange!

Awesome wife though, no matter what you decide . . . .

Yes, I had already thought that the irony is heavy in this whole deal. The 20th Anniversary Mac computer updates are held in check so Apple can help sell millions of bottles of sugar water for a company whose former CEO once was picked to run Apple and then had the audacity to fire Steve Jobs from the company he founded! And now the Pepsi "jingle" is Apple's iTunes!!

Yikes - more rumors gone bad . . .

"LoopRumors took a brief hiatus but is back to tell you that we learned some interesting information today. Apple is indeed planning a 20th Anniversary Macintosh. Our sources are strongly suggesting that Monday, January 26th with be the date of introduction. Specifics on the model are still not known, however, the we do have some scattered information that we are compiling and will post when we make sense of it. Stay tuned."

I just hit an old bookmark by mistake and this popped up - was posted 1/22/04. Maybe Steve-o is just waiting until all the rumor sites are proven wrong, and THEN he'll announce the new units.

Maury really is a good guy

Chicken: Good — Crow: Bad
Well, I didn’t even come close to hitting the nail on the head regarding Apple announcements that I understood were taking place yesterday — sorry about that! And believe me, I’m more disappointed than anyone because I’m ready, willing, and able to place an order for a generation 2 G5 the second Apple starts taking orders.

So what happened? How I’d totally miss the boat? I assumed too much, I suppose, regarding the stock issues and information I was given by Microcenter and the Galleria Apple Store. Two different people at Microcenter told me flat-out, without any coaxing, that new Mac systems were being released this week — but they couldn’t give full details or MLAs. A girl form the Apple Store said as much — though not in so many precise words.

Apparently they were wrong and/or yanking my chain — and since I’m wanting a G2 G5 as much as the next guy, I jumped the gun. So does this mean we WON’T see any new Power Macs this week? No it doesn’t — so I, for one, will be keeping my eyes peeled. Sorry for the confusion everyone! =(

This from the RAILHead Design web site today. Yes, I'm waiting for the "G2 G5's" as well.

Superbowl being an all American event gives even more reason for apple to increase web traffic to it store. As far as I know, most product releases are done first in the US and then worldwide, so it makes perfect marketing sense. Again all we can do is speculate

Sorry but the SuperBowl is far from being a TV hit worldwide...
biggest TV hit : Soccer World Cup
2nd : Olympic Games
3rd : Tour de France (cycling)
......
I think SuperBowl is definitely one of the biggest TV event in the US, but worldwide...for sure not...
I mean US = around 300 millions inhabitants, so 5% of the inhabitant living on earth....
