people will pay 2k for a back ordered phone ?

Then I have a heavily used toilet for $50K ready for them ;)

Nothing says ****** like someone taking someones place in line who truly wants the phone, just to make a buck, hopefully it doesn't work out for them

Recall that Looney Tunes line?
'If you can't beat em, join em'

I say buy two ... sell one for a marketup (256GB) VERY fast in the first 30 days.

I fully get your point though ... but WHY are you waiting in line to BUY an iPhone when you can use the Apple Store App, buy it, pre-order it, then PICKUP in store - you'll ALWAYS have one waiting for you. This dumb lineup ideology died with Jobs and there is NO GIFT or prize packs outside of China store openeings anymore. So there REALLY is no point of lining up!

is the world filled with people THAT desparate to be a star or 5mins on media?!!!

What happened to the days with people of integrity.

I think scalping is fair game. If people weren't willing to pay silly money due to impatience then scalpers wouldn't exist..

I read that whilst imagining you rubbing your hands together with a fire behind you, laughing menacingly.

How much will you charge? 256GB for £two innocent children? :D

Don't know yet, I'm not too ready....If I can get say £750 extra for each then I've got my one free with a bit of pocket money to buy a turkey for little Tim.

Hope all the scalpers get burned. Pure scum.
LOL You wish physical pain and disfigurement on fellow human beings, and you call those taking a risk with their own money pure scum....

Nice....

Scalping is obviously a crappy thing to do, but it’s hard to be mad at the guy flipping iPhones when there are people in this world who are willing to pay a 50-100% markup because they have the patients of a five year old, or are too lazy to get up early and pre-order.

I just don't understand that logic. Wake up at midnight PST and order the phone if you want it. I am using my time to turn a profit if I choose to do so.

Like I said earlier, I plan on keeping the phone but if I 1) decide to keep my SE or 2) see them selling for insane prices, I am going to capitalize on the opportunity to fund an additional X for free.

Another example: I bought stanley cup finals tickets (huge Pens fan) for the games in Nashville when they were $440 a piece. I sold each ticket for thousands because it made no sense not to. I had my hotel booked, but couldn't resist.

Then you’re not a scalper. Your sole intent isn’t to buy the phone for resale.

Lining up is literal as in what you are stating, and being in the pre order queue as well, referring to both. I use the app thanks tho

Scalpers exist because there are either gullible, desperate or a little bit of both who are willing to be bamboozled.
If they weren't there the scalpers would go back into the deep, dark crevice from which they emerged.
This unmoral, greedy act should not be sugar coated nor should it be justified.

I'm debating buying 2 to flip one and hopefully it'll cover most of the cost of my personal X if I can get one, I have an average job with average pay, I CAN afford to buy 1 but with a wife who makes very little money and a kid to support, it would be safer for me financially to NOT spend $1000 on a new phone.

I wouldn't say I'm greedy or from a dark crevice of any corner. If I work my butt off and land more than 1 unit I deserve to make a profit off the 2nd one to cover my personal one. Now people who buy like 5 to flip are kind of being ******s but not all people who flip phone are terrible people.

That is pretty much my exact logic. I just cannot see a scenario where I am not selling the phone if we are talking a $1K profit for doing absolutely nothing.

I was able to get my hands on some extra sets of AirPods earlier this year and people were more then happy to pay a little extra for them. None of them complained. They were impossible to find and I was able to get them. I dont see anything wrong with it.

I'm also not selling my 7 this year because I promised it to my mom who is using an iPhone 4 that was handed down to her from my sister. So I don't have any other way to recoup this year.

I did the same thing. I got 3 pairs of Airpods and sold 2 for a slight profit to cover my personal pair.

Maybe Apple should just start the price of the X at $3K, wait an unspecified period of time, then drop the price some to pick up new buyers. They could rinse and repeat until the demand subsides at each price point. Same thing the scalpers are doing, isn't it? Apple would be roasted for the practice though.

I remember the first gold iPhone (iPhone 5s) going for north of $2000 5 years ago. Given the hype around the X... yeah. It'll happen. I hate that it does, but at least Apple can fill orders, unlike Nintendo who basically creates scarce products to create inflated prices.

Gold is Best! Best! Best! Best!

Either scalping screws people over or it doesn’t. If something is wrong, it’s simply wrong. The scale/volume is irrelevant.

There is really no difference between you and the guy you’re calling an ******.

So if the scalpers for some reason couldn't sell, would they just be able to return within return period? If so then there are no risks..

Screws people over? When something is first come first serve and you're not putting in the effort to get it, it's not "screwing someone over" it's catering to the lazy. At the stroke of midnight PST it's fair game for everyone. It's not the fault of anyones if you're not there to get the phone.

The scale/volume actually IS relevant because the world isn't black and white... you would be way more P.O'd at me if you saw me holding 5 iPhone X phones instead of 2. I have 2 upgrades and my wife doesn't want the phone. Why shouldn't I get 2?

Why would they want to do that? What does Apple care if who the phone goes to? They care about how many they can sell. They won't get roasted for having a $3k phone. They'll be bankrupt because nobody would shop with them anymore.

Do you think there will a 1 limit per customer when ordering the X online?

You don’t think celebs will have them given to them for the publicity?
But I agree rich people wouldn’t care paying 3k for a phone. Look at the gold and ceramic Apple Watch
I'm going to get one and flip it for $3k min. There are desperate people out there, including "Celebs" that Tim Cook doesn't care about.

I’m not telling you what you should or shouldn’t do, I’m saying your logic is flawed.

Scalping isn’t wrong because “someone will get P’O’d at you”. It’s wrong because the only reason you’re making a profit is because you’re making someone else worse off. You’re not adding any value. You’re creating more demand/less supply in order to make money, and it’s causing someone else to either have to wait for a longer ship date or leave the store without what they wanted. This is true if you flip 1 phone or 5.

You can say you don’t care about any of that, but it doesn’t make any sense to say it’s OK as long as you don’t make too many people worse off.

Lol says the chap who hopes others get burned. Quiet remarkable. I hope you wearing a scarf, I hear it can get quite breezy that high up on your pedestal.

You aren’t making anyone worse off. They have a choice; be inline and pre order, wait for general availability, or if they must have it sooner pay someone else for their time to do the work instead.

Heck I already know that the stars align for me that morning. I’m flying back home from business the evening before. I’ve got a day off yet will still get up early before walking my dog and then have a nice lunch with my wife. So o have the time to do this.

If it was the week before or after I wouldn’t have had the time. I would make lots more money that one day than what the phone costs. So not worth it to cancel my businsss meetings and queue up instead of travel. And if I wanted one at launch then I may decide to pay someone else for their time and effort and still be quids in.

Nobody made me worse off then, in fact in my scenario I’m actually better off even though I’m paying more.

I honestly see no problem with that. We do this all the time. I pay my gardener to mow my lawn, costs me less the if I did it myself and thus not earning my own money. I also pay a decorator to pain my home instead of taking time off to do it myself.

I seriously fail to see what the problem is in paying other people for a service.

Apple is going to get wise one day to scalping and start variable pricing like sports teams do with big games to get that excess $ it use to leave on the table. Totally killed amateur ticket scalping for many hot games because there isn’t enough “juice” left to make it worthwhile. It would work like this:

To get a guaranteed phone on launch day: MSRP +35% premium.
Launch week: +10% premium
Launch month: +3% premium
Months 2-5: no premium
Months 6-8: 2% discount
Months 9-12: 10% discount
