I don’t care about 120 hz. I don’t care about AOD. If they were to add them to base models I would be disabling them first thing to save battery life. It would mean extra hassle for me when setting up. It would especially piss me off because it would add cost for features I couldn’t care less about. You need 120 hz and AOD there are Pro’s for that. For me base models is “Pro” because it doesn’t have all that extra crap and it’s lighter. I hope they go back to base models with “worse” cameras and remove that hideous camera bump. Also remove Camera Control. Make price little less. Perfect.
Well Apple should produce dumb phone level feature iPhone then, and charge a lot less, but still run iOS. Idk how this can be made.

If Apple had added 120hz to the standard iPhone 16’s this year, does anybody think there would be enough there to not take sales off the Pro models further? I think Apple are holding features like this back because the differences aren’t big enough in regard to basic specs and that affects the bottom line.

My two cents on this topic, since I’m also feeling a bit frustrated about this Apple’s decision: 1k € phone cannot be lowered down in terms of features just to make the flagship device more appealing and attractive. It should be on the other way around, proving the premium device with amazing technology and features. For me 120hz is the bare minimum right now.

I agree 100 percent. I run on low battery mode and 120hz is turned off. And i have always had the pro models.
was waiting for a decent regular model this year and Apple didn’t disappoint.

Yes and no. I don’t mind a Pro line. Give the Pro camera control and leave it off the 16 non pro. I just don’t think AOD and 120Hz are features that separate or distinguish Pro vs non pro
I thought about this, and it makes sense now, but I think Camera Control will have a use for Apple Intelligence later. I think it's not implemented as a "final" feature.

I hope I'm right because the critics did not make this feature glow so far.

They are not pro features but they’re not features that Apple users are clamoring for, so apple saves a few nickles on each phone by not including them.

AOD and 120 Hz refresh rates are not Pro features. They both should have been included in the IPhone 16/16 Plus models. Apple needs to stop gimping their “lower end” phones. At $800, they both need AOD and 120hz.

Regardless of wether or not you can tell the difference between 60 vs 120 or you don’t use AOD, these are both standard features these days.

Vehicles in Az come with air conditioning. It’s not a “Pro” feature. Leather seats are a ”Pro” feature. 30 years ago, air conditioning was an upgrade. Now, it comes standard.

Apple withholding basic features like these is the kind of thing that is driving me away from Apple products.

Agree with this. Pro motion and AOD aren’t pro features. That’s like saying you need the top of the line car in 2024 with to get a back up camera. Maybe 10 years ago it was a premium feature but not anymore.

They have done the exact same philosophy to the MacBooks with the Pros getting 120hz and the air missing out.

I have been eyeing out a 15” MacBook Air to replace my M1 Pro max as I longer need the power.

But they aren’t standard features, otherwise you couldn’t post your post.

they want you to buy the pro phones thats why. it's all a reason to get the consumer to spend more money on the product so they make more. they could easily give the 16 and 16 plus those features but that would take sales away from the pro iphones. apple has been known to intentionally leave out a feature here and there to give you a reason to upgrade or buy the higher model etc perfect example when the series 7 released and got the keyboard but they didn't give that same keyboard to any other watch below it when 3rd party developers was able to give the series 6 a keyboard, which they also in turn conviently removed from the app store a few days before the unvieling of the series 7. tldr its intentional to get you to buy the pro phones and be aware or apples shady practices
So, they make the other phones but don’t want anyone to buy them, they only want you to buy the Pros?

Seems like a waste of money to make all those other phones then….🤔

Of course, your overly simplistic theory is silly. They don’t give the Pros exclusive features because they “want you to buy the Pro models”. They do it because there are some people who are willing to pay for those features, and there are other people who don’t care about those features and will buy something less expensive. If they can make more from more features, great. If they can make money from people buying “lesser” phones, great.

This is like the weird theory that Apple keeps the base storage at 128GB to “FORCE” you to upgrade to the 256GB. Of course, you aren’t forced. And a lot of people buy the 128GB LMAO. Guess they failed in that forcing thing.

It’s just classic projection from the type of person who would frequent an Apple fan site; they’re FORCING me to upgrade!! No…you just want the upgrade.

Apple Derangement Syndrome is a real thing; it makes you see weirdly sinister things in common sense business strategies.

Funny thing is a few of my friends were like I want the pro but the colors on the regular 16s look better. I told them ohhh it’s premium metal colors and they just said it’s boring! I know oh it’s gonna be in ancasw but they all use clear cases. If Apple can’t figure out a real pro feature just make one damn phone, perhaps the next premium feature will be a super thin phone with ehhhh cameras based off the rumors. I myself would have loved that green 16 if it had the always on display.

I totally agree with you.

The following is what the typical Tim
Cook apologist thinks:
"How dare you criticize Apple! Tim Cook is doing an excellent job, and the proof of that is because Apple is one of the richest companies in the world and is making record profits. Therefore, they are not doing anything wrong with their hardware and software."

That's the only reason (AOD) why I had to upgrade from my loved 14+ with the longest battery life to a 16 Pro.

My new EV car needs AOD for the phone to unlock it....

If my EV didn't need AOD then I'd keep the 14+....

Out of curiosity, which electric vehicle needs an Always on Display to unlock it? Shouldn’t it unlock automatically (via Bluetooth or NFC) when you get close enough to the door?

The 14 should have AOD, no?

What I think makes sense is for Pro features to facilitate creation instead of consumption.

So high quality microphones, more, larger cameras, brighter displays, bigger battery, more ports.

Variable refresh, Face ID, Dynamic Island are IMHO not Pro features. Always-on-Display might be.

I agree, it's high time they ship 120Hz to the regular iPhones. If they want to upsell the Pros then its on Apple to figure out how to. At $799, Apple needs to finally bring the 120Hz displays across all iPhones.

I think they're terrified that when they bring 120Hz to the base model iPhones their ASP is going to drop significantly, with many more people opting away from the Pro phones. Many people, including myself, consider ProMotion to be the feature that holds them in the Pro line. They need to bring another 'Can't Live Without' feature to the Pro models before they bring ProMotion to the base phones.
Most consumers have no idea what a panel refresh even is.

I want to add that 120hz on the base iPhone next year is fine, as long as the Pro models receive 144hz screen and at least 10GB of RAM.

AC is functional and a necessity in many places (like AZ) as it prevents people from being very uncomfortable during their drive and getting to their destination all sweaty (or in extreme cases prevents heat stroke), so it makes sense that it became standard. Leather seats were and still are just nice to have, and pretty subjective in value, so it makes sense that it remains an option. Leather sounds a lot like the better analogy for 120hz because some people care and others don’t, but ultimately it’s just nice to have—no one needs it. AOD is a little more functional, so maybe a good analogy for that is an auto dimming rear view mirror or a car reverse camera. AC is very necessary for many people, so that’s almost like the camera in a phone.
