Then why did they mislead everyone for months and only say so at the 11th hour?

It’s because this is the outcome they wanted.

Thinking it is reasonable is ridiculous. If it was reasonable they would have wanted people to pay it. It is abundantly clear that they don’t want anyone to pay it.

Which is fine, but then shut it down. Pretending they want to be paid but making it clear they don’t want to be paid is what is dumb.

Why would they want to shut it down when all the AI startups are hungry for original user data to train from?

Are you for real? Without Redditors Reddit does not have any content. Reddit is literally made up out of countless of hours of work put into it by its users. It's literally what Reddit is.

The number of posts doesn't matter, it's about how much advertisement income Reddit is able to be generated from it's users. And Redditors are really bad at this. Same problem TikTok has.

LinkedIn users are way more profitable than Redditors, yes it's real.

No, Reddit is really bad at selling advertisements. With so many micro-niche subs, selling segmented advertising should be a no-brainer. These are lucrative targets that require no algorithm and Reddit is not able to exploit it.

Assuming those LLMs haven’t already scrapped everything of value off Reddit. Now won’t that be the sweetest irony of them all?

ChatGPT their training data ended in 2021, so it will be updated at some point.

Why are you so angry?
Ironic how folks react to comments of others with anger 😡 emojis (which is literally telling everyone they’re angry) and then turn around to ask others “why are you so angry?”, when others are just stating facts. These days when folks are confronted with facts, they explode and yell, “you’re angry” 😂

As of writing this, there are literally zero angry emoji reactions on that post. Making things up is a pretty bad way to get people to take anything you say seriously.

As the developer, I just want to say, I don't think you're a bad person or anything if you take the refund, but I do really appreciate the folks who are kind in declining it.

For reference, 30 days ago Reddit was still being very promising with their claims for the API pricing to be equitable and based in reality, and 4 months before that Reddit told me they had no plans to change the API this year, so this level of refund really hit me out of nowhere.

It's a gut punch, and I loved building Apollo, but the kindness and support people have shown over the last few weeks really means a lot in making this easier to swallow, so I genuinely really do appreciate those folks considering declining the refund.
Thank you for being a genuinely awesome person and how you’ve handled yourself through this entire ordeal has been entirely professional while Reddit has been extremely unprofessional. No reasonable person, if they truly understood how much Reddit screwed you over, would ever say that you’re anything but kind and accommodating.

I think the part that most people don’t understand is even if you wanted to increase your prices, you couldn’t on any existing subscribers until their term ran out. And Reddit sprung this on you out of nowhere. This would put you massively in the hole on owing Reddit their ridiculous fees, which are an order of magnitude higher than industry standards, on the hope that most people will stick around and pay a subscription fee that is many times higher than it was before when it renews. They really screwed your over and then lied about it and you had receipts and then they tried to act like showing the receipts was bad faith. **** /u/spez

You will be on the right side of history. This is the death knell for Reddit. I wish you nothing but the best and hope that you team up with a competitor to develop a killer first party app.

First off it was not a fact and secondly I never reacted with the angry react, I just called him out for his lies and used the disagree emoticon.

But you seem pretty worked up about this too.

A few weeks ago I deleted both Apollo and also deleted my Reddit account.

Reddit is dead. Let's be honest. It was 70% a cesspit of hate, anyway. That 30% "other" sometimes made it worthwhile, but it was becoming increasingly rare. Parallels to Twitter throughout have been very apt.

I look forward to the next big thing!

Reddit dying is a good thing. Some of the worst crap on the internet comes from that dump hole and has found its way into the real world. Any action that kneecaps the site at large is good in my book. Glad this dev got screwed hopefully the entire platform is next. You get what you deserve.

I agree he’s probably richer than I’ll ever be, even after the refunds, but it’s literally a couple of bucks I’d be getting back. Next to useless to me outside of maybe a movie rental but over his entire customer base it makes an impactful dent. So yeah, I’ll be declining the refund.

Can someone explain how Apollo is so vastly superior to the Reddit app? I paid for Apollo Pro years ago (based on all the rave reviews), and have probably used it less than 10 times. I use the main app almost daily, and while it’s far from perfect, I find much more usable for some reason.

When Microsoft see's a product/business that can enhance/improve their own products, they buy that product/business
When Google see's a product/business that can enhance/improve their own products, they buy that product/business
When Apple see's a product/business that can enhance/improve their own products, they buy that product/business

When Reddit see's a product/business that can enhance/improve their own products, they get that product/business shutdown.

note: I have no doubt there are examples of Microsoft, Apple and Google getting products/businesses shutdown but for the most part they buyout the product/business rather than having it shutdown. So please, we do not need to see examples of this.

Me? Worked up? Naaa. I’m enjoying this - someone actually going against the popular opinion.
So easy to tell someone they’re telling lies, because what they’re saying doesn’t fit your opinions. You know who could be truthful? Christian. Publishing his revenues and expenses would probably get him more donations than just pittance.
