What’s great about this is even if AirPods are beaten by competitors, who flood the market with great wireless headphones, Apple were still right in their vision of a future with wireless headphones.

Their most controversial descision - remove the headphone jack - has become uncontroversial much quicker than people accepted the absence of Flash / CD drives.

What you failed to mention about the W1 chip that i feel is even greater than the pairing feature is the range. I can walk 150 feet away from my iphone and still receive a perfect signal. still waiting for Apple to wake up and put the W1 in the Beats pill or introduce a Travelpod to go along with the HomePod.

Lot cheaper options for corded wireless earbuds...

Apple needs to release a black version of airpods. Not everyone wants to walk around with what looks like QTips sticking out of their ears.

I don’t understand this complaint. You know what AirPods look like? EarPods with no wire. That’s it. That’s their design.

Wired will always be cheaper. If cheapness is your no. 1 aim, you likely won’t buy the product with the best user experience.

The good news is, lots of Android phones are cheaper than iPhone - and they have a headphone jack too.

So if you want to spend less money, there’s an option there for you.

WTF cable connecting them? I use one airpod all the time for phone calls... would be awkward having one hanging round my neck since I only like to use ONE while on the phone.
Why would it be "awkward" to have 1 hanging around your neck? Besides I think most of us use them to listen to music. I also like the min retention cord to prevent one from falling out of your ear onto the ground. Makes them harder to lose.

1. That's not how you charge an Apple Pencil
2. The mouse quick charges a day's use in two minutes, and two months charge in two hours.
3. Nothing wrong with the battery case aside subjective aesthetics

If you’d read what I was replying to then you’d understand my post.

The battery pack is fugly to say the least.

1 and 2 are just plain weird (both of which I own) and as much as I like Apple products, that small little adaptor they give you for the pencil is a cheap design choice. They should have provided a charging dock for the pencil.

The majority of my daily used tech is from Apple, and as much as people try to ignore it, their attitude towards the consumer has changed in the last few years.

Small chargers for the iPad Pro line and iPhones, adaptors needed to connect your iPhone to your MacBook (adaptors or cables that are not included in the box).

I really enjoy using Apple products, but unmatched they are not.

Their saving grace are MacOS and iOS

The pencil thing is weird but you only have to do it for few minutes and they give you away to change it with a lighting cable if you want.

Yes, I know. I was just making a point to the post I was replying to.

I love my AirPods - they sound good enough and are incredibly convenient and comfortable to use (as long as they fit your ears!) with great battery life

The W1 chip really does make a difference with connecting between multiple devices and I've noticed that you get a lot of the benefits of them even when connected to non-iOS devices: I connected mine to my SE and, as expected, they also show as an option on my Mac and iPad.

What was less expected though was how well they also interact on my Android phone: Once manually paired, I can switch between devices as easily on Android as on iOS - just long press on Bluetooth to bring up the connection box and select them from the list. They will then disconnect from whatever device they are connected to and connect to the Android device exactly as they do within iOS

IMO, Apple really knocked it out of the park with the AirPods and no-one else is even close to them

This has been my experience too.

I have them paired with windows, Linux, my Pixel 2, older Motorola android phone, and many other devices. The way the Airpods will release a connection and maintain it on what your are using is brilliant. They really worked some Magic back into Bluetooth, a technology that can often be frustrating to deal with.

Quite honestly, I have run into issues with my other BT devices where I swear they are broken when they actually aren’t. I am just too used to how the Airpods work now.

I think this speaks to Apple’s superior ecosystem... iPhone, AirPod, Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, better apps, etc. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

It’s funny how some people who claimed that an open system was far superior to Apple’s “closed” (and expensive) approach are now happily buying into Google’s walled garden, even though it’s 2nd rate and ironically, over-priced, next to Apple’s offerings.

Google messed up. There push behind getting them to be desirable was to focus on this translation feature. How many of us regularly face I need for such an app?

Apple fixed two problems by making the connecting easy and getting rid of that annoying cord. If you have ever gone running with a cord flopping on your sweaty neck you know how nice getting rid of that cord is.

I think that the design of the AirPod is one of the best products Apple has produced.

Nit picking: Treble is HIGH end, not low end.

I am surprised that the AirPods sound as good as they do, and I have the perfect ears, apparently, for them. They stay in. They just work. I've had a few incidences where the things sound like they lose 'sync', but that's only happened twice now. I tried the Beats wireless earphones and they fell out faster than anything I've ever put in my ears. I called Beats/Apple support looking for suggestions, and they kept offering to replace them, which wouldn't have 'fixed' anything, because it's apparently my ears that are 'defective'.

All in all, I have nothing bad to say about the AirPods, except possibly that the case is 'too small'. I have lost it in the car before, but part of that is on me.

Recommendation: If the Apple EarBuds stay in your head, and you like the way they feel, BUY THESE! You will not be disappointed.

"Normal" people adapt. It's only a few loud luddite curmudgeons that yap on about these changes. I was as befuddled as everyone when Apple yanked the headphone jack. But the adapter included in the 7 was perfectly fine. I just left it on my headphones so it was never really as inconvenient as, say, my MBP with only USB-C inputs. But even that I deal with -- though it is a PITA and I do scream "PIMA" every time I go to plug in a thumb drive forgetting there is no USB-A port on my laptop. But then I drag out my adapter and continue working.

As soon as I would have to fold the cords up to put it in the container I'm out.

AirPods are crazy convenient.

And just wait until they gain inductive charging. Hoping v2 has more gesture capability. Then it becomes a complete package.

There is something about the AirPods that i didn't see yet commented and its a huge feature.

I do a lot of phone calls with them, and they typically only last 1:30 hours in the calls, so one of the most critical features, is for you to be able to charge one of them while using another.

Also, another big point, sometimes travelling in public transports and stuff like that, people tend to use only on phone, and the ability for AirPods to join the stereo channels in one, is something that you really get used to (no more missing whole guitars on musics :))

Google ones don't touch this points...

I love my AirPods, the ease of use, the range, the battery life, the ability to use just one, the lack of cables, the seamless transition between my Apple devices. They stay in my ears, they connect to my Watch3 cellular for music without a phone, they are crisp for phone calls. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm waiting to see what BlackBerry comes up with.

I've signed a non-disclosure, but here they are anyway

Love my airpods - agree with other comments that they're probably my favorite Apple product in years (though the iPhone X is sweet if you can afford it ;) ) Never tried the pixel buds at this point.. but some thoughts

* used to use bluetooth "sports" style pods - similar idea to the pixel buds with just a wire between them. They were fine in general, but when sweating during exercise the cable would stick to my neck and be more likely that it would pop out. would be interesting to hear if pixel bud cable had similar thing or was somehow a material that doesn't tend to stick to (wet) skin
* Would have been interested to hear comparison of the microphone/phone quality comparison too between the devices in a review like this
* And what the battery life is in talk mode vs. listen only mode. I was a little surprised at how fast battery died in airpods first time I tried them in a conference call vs. just music/podcast listening - though it is published, just not in the bold print :)
* however, that does lead to a nice bonus IMO about the airpod truly wireless design - very easy to use one airpod, leaving the other in the case, when on a long conference call for example, and then swap 'em out when battery gets low - can go quite a long time on this. Sure, not as nice as having in 2 ears, but it wasn't that long ago that we were all walking around with the 1 ear bluetooth phone adapters, was it? :)
* and I suspect this "q-tip" sticking out of your ears thing will fade as more and more folks start adapting to it. After all, why does it look "less of a tool" to have a wire dangling from said q-tips than if the wire isn't there? just that we're all used to seeing each other with the stupid wires everywhere, and we're just not used to seeing it otherwise - at least that's my thought - which is worth as much as you paid for it.

Yeah, that's great, but I'll stick with my $30 Anker bluetooth earbuds. They sound great and have a clip that keeps them in my ear... AirPods and Pixel Buds look like they'd both pop out of my ears, never to be seen again.

Sure, they can't swap between devices as easily, don't have a mic, and have to use an ugly microUSB charge cable, but it's not worth spending an extra $120. That's just insane; especially when Pixel Buds just look like a marginally improved version of what I have. At least AirPods are something a little different. :p

Gestures would be amazing, like a volume slider
