Well, let’s face it,the absence of Jony Ive is just starting to show. The last five Pro generations looked good, but they were basically the same design carried over from the iPhone 4S/5S era. This feels like the first real non-Ive design, and it sucks. Even the Air, if you take away the thinness factor, isn’t exactly beautiful—but at least it’s not flat-out ugly like the Pro range. It’s funny how both the baseline iPhone and Air have better choices this year. I don’t know what possessed Apple this year with the Pro series.
IMO we have not needed cases for years. I have dropped iPhone pros routinely to concrete from 5 feet quite survivably. I did the 16 PM 15 feet to concrete and it did crack the back, but that was pretty extreme and we should not remotely expect phones to survive that kind of a fall. As it was, the phone still worked fine. But the back glass was cracked.so "awe dropping" was indeed a reference to better drop protection.
v happy about that.
one day we will never need cases at all! one day!
The sensors aren't true 48mp and haven't been since forever, they are 12mp with each pixel broken into four sections, so you get for example one blue color sensing pixel with four pixels of black and white shade data. It's still not clear in everything I've read or seen. I thought the rumours said it was a true 4-8x optical zoom and not a crop in to get 8x
Agreed. I'll let them off just this once & consider it their Zune moment!😂this is what I dislike about Apple lately....there is zero product consistency. there should be standard Apple white (white/silver) and black. NOT midnight, not space grey, but black and then they can have starlight, midnight, etc as alternatives.
With the exception of the rumored foldable iPhone, I’d imagine next year would be an “S” year with the 18s looking largely the same to spread the R&D and manufacturing costs across at least two years. Maybe it ends up slightly less ugly and with better colors, but I’d expect this design to stick around until at least 2027.Underwhelmed. I was looking forward to replacing my iPhone 12 Pro this year, but I think I'll just have the battery replaced and use it for one more year. Maybe next year they'll do better.
Yeah they won't redesign next year. They need to make their money back on this mold before they will start a new design. The internals will be upgraded with the new modems next year. With the exception of the rumored foldable iPhone, I’d imagine next year would be an “S” year with the 18s looking largely the same to spread the R&D and manufacturing costs across at least two years. I will take better optics at the cost of bigger bump any time.So glad they navigated the tariff exclusion, instead of 25% China, 50% India with accompanying price increases. With 256 as base storage, the 17 pro price is about the same as the 16 pro! Faster, better cameras, harder, brighter display — you can “almost” overlook the huge, ugly camera bump.
The value of 8K is in the extra resolution for recomposing shots and/or viewing in 4K. The more Apple promotes these phones as “for Pros” the more they need to match Pro features. We’ve been through this a million times on these threads…Who can even watch 8K video? Thats a legit real pro feature. Not iPhone Pro...but media production pro feature.
You’re not being picky— no black colorway is a weird miss by Apple. I wonder if it was just too prone to scratches and they gave up. 🤷🏻♂️I might be being picky, but seriously...the phone I really wanted this year and NO Black, Dark Graphite color?? IDK, Deep Blue is ok, but I guess I'd go with the Silver.
That would be my first Silver iPhone since the original 2007.
Selling tens of millions of $1k phones I do not think that Apple needs to think in terms of "spreading the R&D and manufacturing costs across at least two years." More likely R&D is constantly ongoing and they are constantly innovating each new small improvement in material or other engineering science on an ongoing basis. With the exception of the rumored foldable iPhone, I’d imagine next year would be an “S” year with the 18s looking largely the same to spread the R&D and manufacturing costs across at least two years. I am with you on color. WTF Apple? Not having space gray or equal is totally absurd. I laugh at people who care about color, but it turns put that I do care when there is no simple civilized gray or black choice.Ugly design aside, the Pro range has a very bizarre and limiting choice of colors.
I own the 16 Pro Max in Desert Gold, and I’ve gotta say, I REALLY don’t like the three colors in the Pro range.
I was considering upgrading just for the camera, especially the zoom range, but I just can’t bring myself to like any of these colors.
The phones (Pro/Pro Max) themselves aren’t good looking, but I could live with that if there were better color options. or equal is absurdSpace Black? Space Grey? A light gold? Something. Silver is extremely boring, and I can’t stand anything blue, and orange is just too funky for an adult like me. I like a hint of orange—like the button on my Ultra—but a full-on giant Pro Max iPhone in orange? Can’t do it.
Whatever are you talking about? I think you are making stuff up. Do you even own a titanium alloy Apple product? I have beat up hard on an original Apple Watch Ultra for years now and an iPhone 16 Pro Max for a year. The titanium alloys rock. Titanium is pricey and hard to work with from Apple's end, but from the consumer's end titanium alloys are all good.I remember posting it back then, everyone drank the koolaid and said its the best material ever. I told them its not, its garbage. Now we are back to aluminium what a scam
The primary difference in the Pro versions is added camera competence, especially the new telephoto. The +$300 cost is very worth it to me to get the improved cameras, but not to everyone. There is more, because the Pro phones have a substantially stronger chip, but the camera is the biggest difference.I need to upgrade my iphone 13, the screen size is too small and it bothers my eyes..and the battery life for it stinks, so not sure what to get, the iphone 17 or the pro..not sure what the difference is honestly
For me the colors dont matter since I will be getting a purple case which will basically make the iphone purple anywayThe primary difference in the Pro versions is added camera competence, especially the new telephoto. Another difference is the color choices. This year it seems like Apple put a vision-impaired intern in charge of color choices.
?? Exactly what is it that you need to achieve, and why? iPhone Pros have always had camera bumps to facilitate the spectacular camera competence that they provide. How are you supposed to lie the Pro or PM flat on a table??
Video usage is just a metric. Expect the Pros to have about 10% better battery life. But IMO it is just 10% more excellent than excellent. ;~)For me the colors dont matter since I will be getting a purple case which will basically make the iphone purple anywayfor me I care a lot about battery life..I read on a separate thread about how all three have improved battery life but they talk about it as far as video playback which doesnt mean much to me since I use my iphone to make phone calls, go on web sites, and go on X..so want an idea the difference in battery life for tasks like that
