The problem exists on every phone, the difference is if you're in a sketchy 3G area. My phone can exhibit no change in full bars or drop to 0 from full depending on my location in town.

No, I don't think he is saying that at all. I think he is implying that the problem is not as widespread as people seem to think it is though. That is very different.

I don’t believe he said that he didn’t think anyone was not having a problem. He said that the usual people complaining (some who don’t even have the iPhone) were the one’s complaining.

Fair enough, if he meant that I apologise. My friend has the new iPhone 4, and first things that strike me is that the new hardware and the screen is out of this world in terms of anything else. However this problem is very easily replicated, and she lives in fairly strong 3G area. Which is a nightmare as she is left handed.

Congratulations Apple on the 1.7 million iphone 4 units sold in just 3 days.
HTC EVO 4g sold 300,000 units and sold out on opening day... oh, wait they overstated their figures 3x the actual  (http://www.businessinsider.com/sprint-overstates-htc-evo-sales-by-3x-2010-6).
Droid X, the iphone killer, will probably sell for about 250,000 units on its first week (comparable to the original droid or unless they'll overstate their figures to 4x the actual). And about 1 million after 1 month. Oh, wait... it's BUY 1 GET 1 FREE promotion time. They'll be releasing droid 3. :D

For all of those complaining that this thread is being hijacked by reception comments: iphone 4 and the reception issue go hand-in-hand. You can't have a discussion about one without the other. It's a hot topic right now.

Reminds me of...when George W Bush would do something seemingly popular (like pardon a turkey on Thanksgiving), many on the left would say "Why doesn't he pardon all those innocent Iraqis dying in the unjust war??! Bush lies!!" (note: I don't intend to turn this into a political thread!!)

Right now, given the press dedicated to it, it's hard to think about the iphone when it, um, can't make a phone call when you hold it your hand.

I had two dropped calls with my 3G on O2, so what?

I have no problem with my iPhone 4 so far, but I switched to VF regardless.

The point is I've never had any dropped calls with any of the other iP's; however, in the last 3 days of using an iP4, I have had 6. As a result I have returned my iP4 for a full refund and am now back using my 3GS.

You're joking, right? You don't think a phone that drops calls when you touch it in the wrong spot is defective?

If it was the Droid with this problem you would be having a field day with it.

You seem very keen to get stuck in to a debate you clearly have very little to do with. You don't own an iP4 and thus your main point of exposure is via these forums - which are clearly going to disproportionally represent issues such as that of the antenna.

I think the number of people with the reproducible signal issue, compared to that which are actually getting dropped calls is very different. I'm not going to deny there is an issue here but I think you seem to have a distorted view of the severity, gained from these forums. I for one can reproduce the loss in signal, but haven't suffered a dropped call once.

I expect a lot of people will come back at me with their rate of dropped calls, but as I've already said - this isn't a fair view on an internet forum where the majority of threads are to do with product defects shortcomings.

Phenomenal rate of sales. I assumed that since there was 600,000 pre orders, Apple would have something around 400,000 available for opening weekend sales. But 1.1 million on top of the pre-orders is fantastic, irrespective of well publicised problems or not.

They should have stocked up more prior to the launch, 2 mil would have been an easy hit! Having said that, counting Sunday trading and since Europe is a good chunk the way through Monday trading, the 2 million mark must have happened by now!

What are peoples thoughts on first months trading? I'd guess perhaps 10 mil - after the opening weekend rush and "wave 2" countries? When are the next batch of countries commencing sales?

It is an unbelievable rate of sales, no one can deny that. And who can say how many would have been sold if they had the white in stock?

Sounds good...

I just wish they could finish supplying all the pre-orders. From all evidence most of the people who pre-ordered through Best Buy have yet to see a phone.

Someone who disagrees with you isn't automatically a troll

No, but someone with an Android avatar in an Apple forum is looking to stir the pot. Translation=Troll.

Not if it has as many problems as the iP4 has. Dropped calls, yellow spots on screen, etc.

But I guess it's all OK because it's Apple and Apple can do no wrong, right?

But I don't have dropped calls with my iPhone 4, even when holding it the "bad" way. Explain that, Troll.

1.7 million hardware recalls......? hmmm....

Nope.

People who spent $200 or more on a phone that can't function as a phone are just complaining and throwing temper tantrums? I'd be pretty pissed off if it were me.

Luckily, I didn't buy an iPhone 4 and have no plans to, I just feel truly sorry for the people who did buy an iPhone 4 that can't make calls, so perhaps I am complaining and throwing a temper tantrum, but others have good reason to rant about it any chance they get.

With all due respect, if you haven't bought one why comment on an issue you have no first hand experience with?

I did buy one and, while I can replicate the issue to a certain degree, have never seen singal drop entirely. Do I believe others may have a more severe problem? Yes. Do I think it's a total disaster as many many many trolls are trying to make out? Nope, not at all. Do I think it can be fixed with a software update? No idea, but I'm perfectly willing to give Apple time to investigate and resolve the issue. For those that don't want to wait or aren't happy for any reason just take it back, not that hard really.

Sadly it seems that far too many people these days have the attention span of a fruit fly and no patience whatsoever. The net result is when an issue like this does show up it becomes impossible to tell what's really going on through the massive amount of noise thrown up on the subject. I wish that wouldn't happen, I wish people would employ a wee bit of common sense, but I know that's never going to happen on teh interwebz. Ah well.

As for the device itself, not at all surprised they shipped that many and am pretty damn sure they could have sold a lot more if they could make 'em quick enough. It's a gorgeous bit of kit which feels a mile ahead of the competition, a screen that blows away anything else I've seen on a modern smartphone and an OS that works beautifuly well for the vast majority of people.

Wow..I think Apple is really on the verge of World Domination  :D

now think what if apple includes a phone iPod touch (with out 3G and data plan) for $300? ( $0 for 2 years contract)

and of course, the first step is to goto T-Mobile (2011) and Verizon (2012) :D

Reception issue on iPhone 4

Those of you that are having dropped call issues on your iPhone 4, it is not related to the "death grip". You need to reinstall OS4 from scratch and DO NOT sync from your backup. Create a fresh phone. Your signal issues will go away. I have had two friends do this and they have not had any dropped calls since doing a fresh install.

For some reason this issue is being blamed on the death grip when I believe it is a bug with peoples backup or just bad OS4 software from the factory. A fresh install should solve your dropped call problems.

When Steve compared the new iPhone to a leica, I thought that he was full of himself. Now holding one in my hand I am very very surprised!! Its no leica but it's damn close. Sexiest phone out there, hat off to you Steve.

""Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.""

And we wait for the apology from Steve for the % of the 1.7 million who are having reception/camera/proximity sensor and other issues.

Oh right - it's a non-issue ;)

This must be a very sad day for you.

That does sound odd.

I just ran a speed test with just ONE signal bar and 3G and got 2113kbps/371kbps.

Not to bad for 1 bar of reception AND I was holding the antenna. :)

That points to a software issue and not a hardware problem.

The soft thinks that the transmission quality is not good enough and drops the connection because its "no service" threshold value isn't right. Not too hard to fix.

A little disappointing they'd release a statement to gloat first so early in the morning rather than a statement for all those affected by issues that was reported by just about every mainstream media outlet. Still, it's just business I suppose.

And wow, 1.7 million sold, yet my Best Buy only got 2 32GB phones in, and it's the only Best Buy to carry iPhones in all of Tucson, AZ. As I continue to wait on my pre-order, that really sucks for me, :)

Seriously though, congrats to Apple.

did european carriers also moved the early upgrade policy about 6 months or it is only ATT in US?

it will be tough for asian carriers to do so, since iPhone is expensive there and data plans are cheaper there - ex - singapore ... they might stick with 2 year upgrade policy
