The off-center Home Button looks not very Apple-like. Can't unsee it.

Well, I just checked my Air 2 and Pro 1st gen iPads, their home buttons aren’t also centered. I guess your comment needs to travel in time and land in 2010 to be as impactful as you’ve hoped while crafting it.
Not: I’m not a sarcastic coffee mug kid kind of fanboy or a rene richie level delusional mercenary. I feel I have to point this out these days :)

Initial looks: these new iPads look good.

No price rise ( Gasp!)?? :)
I don’t know why they didn’t transition to Apple Pencil 2 support. The Pencil 1 is clunky. That said, the Air is encroaching on the 11” iPad Pro in a big way now.

It's not complicated. The Pencil 2 requires a different iPad chassis. These lower cost iPads can't support that.

Pencil 1 vs Pencil 2 is not complicated... Pencil 1=iPads, Pencil 2=iPad Pro
This makes no sense. Why would a new chassis be required to support the P2?

edit: Thanks @lunarworks for a clarifying post. Flat side for magnets for charging.

Disappointed. Old ass design language that doesn't match the new iPads. Do they just not care anymore? Thick bezels, an off-center home button (thanks Obama @19SK91 ) that cannot be unseen. Couple that low base storage and a high price tag for what's on offer... Apple could have done much better. It's basically an internal upgrade that could have been done a while ago. They didn't even try hard.
To be honest, why try to invest in a product that probably has a small share within the tablets you already sell (I also think they have too many variants of every product now - Steve Jobs would go nuts at the view of adding extra SKUs for the sake of it).

It'll be a handy digital note taker with the Apple Pencil. Loved my original iPad Mini but came away when they were slow to update the internal specs before. Considering it to replace my iPad Air as the Pro is way beyond my needs.

Once this goes on sale, it'll be hot.

Boring, but hot. That A8 was long in the tooth. Certainly A nicer release than the nerfed 10.5"

64GB base? Apple clearly isn't bothering listening to its users anymore. This is ridiculous at this price point and pure greed.

Is it still 2gb of RAM? Perhaps the A12 chip will mitigate some of the issues with the 2018.

I am definitely trading in my 2018 iPad for credit toward the new 256gb Mini. I need that size for my commutes and stuff.

I might trade in mom’s 2018 iPad for the 64gb Air too. It won’t make her like it any more than the 2018, but I think the slightly larger size would be better for her. And we both need different colors (space gray for me for movies, silver for her = she hates the gold LOL).

Any idea what day these will be in stores next week?

Yeah those prices, but with trade ins I can swing it.

At least they gave it a decent processor. I remember calling out that rumor about it using an A9 and thinking it was bunk.

Hopefully it has 4GB of RAM so it will last a while. If so I’ll probably end up replacing my daughter’s Mini 2 with this. I have an old Apple Pencil she could use as well. Seems like a pretty sweet deal to get an A12 and Apple Pencil support for only $399!

For the folks complaining, this new Air looks to be basically the old 10.5” Pro minus the quad speakers and ProMotion display at a $150 discount. The A12 is at least on par with the A10X and it’s still compatible with the Smart Keyboard and Pencil. Seems to be a fair trade off given that we’ve finally got an iPad back at the traditional $500 price point. This will for sure the be iPad for most people for 2019.

It is actually a bit complicated since your equation does not work. Pencil 2=ONLY third generation iPad Pro

Apple's product line across the board is a confused mess.

I'm guessing Apple wants keep a distinct line between the Mini and more expensive iPads? Keep costs down?

I was worried Apple was letting the Mini die. I love the form factor, especially when I have to travel light.

Yep, it's not cheap. But it has some really significant upgrades over iPad mini 4: better display, much faster processor, Apple Pencil support.

And sooner or later, B&H or Best Buy will offer it for $50 off, and maybe $100 off on Black Friday.

The average person won’t need or notice the difference between 1, 2, or 4 GB of RAM, despite what the self-proclaimed “pro” users claim on here.
