Well, Surface Studio design is way much better than the iMac. Too bad it has Windows. In any case, Apple use to lead in design and this iMac is a total failure. I rather buy a Mac Mini, a get a good monitor with slim black bezels and adjustable height.

The entire Surface product lineup from Microsoft is nothing more than Apple envy. Same for those Microsoft stores popping up at some places. I think this happened when Ballmer was still the CEO of Microsoft.

Keep in mind Microsoft Surface will 'cannibalize' the sales of some of its Windows OEM partners.

I use a Windows PC and the new iMac looks good. Let's hope it is kinder to third party repair shops.

God, this is getting so boring. Tim Cook announced that the whole .Mac range would switch to Silicon over the next two years. We are in month 6 or 7 since that announcement. Apple has now replaced all the low-end Macs with M1 Macs.

Compared to the previous low-end iMac you have a much faster CPU, a much much faster GPU, a powerful AI chip, much improved camera, USB-C, and a much larger monitor with 36% more pixels than all the 4K displays that you can buy.

This ^^^ !

It does involve taking personal responsibility. None of my Apple computers came with cables. I had to purchase them. If you really want to use 25 year old USB-A cables because you insist on not having to purchase a $3 cable, I'm sure there are computer manufacturers out there that still offer USB-A ports.
Apple talked me out of buying a $1500 desktop by not including a $5 (or whatever) port. 🤣 Their loss.

It's not a GPU core intentionally disabled, it's using the binned GPU chips where 7 of them are sound and not 8.

Yields don't go 100 percent. It provides a way to use still-great chips and not let them go to waste.
Thanks for the clarification :)

Imagine all the time saved if people hadn’t been complaining about USB a ports for the last <checks notes> five ****ing years. Good god.
I bought about $50 worth of new device cables and display cables back in 2018 and that’s been that. It’s insufferable listening to these people bitch about a port of the better part of 6 years. Of course this completely explains all the whining and complaining about this new iMac. Good grief - BEZELS!?!? I actually think Apple made them white to tweak these people. And it worked!

I can only say that I'm happy to have bought a top spec 27inch Intel iMac 7 months ago: a much better and pro design, along with much powerful specs, except for the CPU in single core benchmarks.

you Also have more ugly desktops (iMacs), non user upgrable computers with entry specs like it was 2016

To me, it looks good as a consumer-friendly computer. I picked up a maxed-out iMac last year with the latest intel chip for some particular needs/interests, however, I could see someone getting their feet wet well in the apple ecosystem with this "friendly" new iMac. My better half has the MBA with the M1 chip and seems to love it; to me this is the air of the desktop range and we'll be waiting with bated breath for the more powerful entrants or possibly an iMac Pro in Q4.

This is the ugliest thing ever. It looks like some crappy LCD monitor from 10 years ago. Awful, truly awful. I think I will keep my 2019 iMac for YEARS to come.
This iMac would've looked amazing if the chin were the same color as the backside and came with black bezels. They fckd up by going with white bezels and the two-tone pastel color scheme.

And the lack of Apple logo on the front feels very jarring. There was no reason to get rid of the apple if they were going to keep the big chin.

Everyone complaining about the colors and the white bezel, look at this picture from Apple. Which devices look dated and which ones look fresh?

Here's a hint: the white bezels are much more modern. And they recall the look of the iPhone, where many versions have a white bezel. But also they recall the first gen iPad, which is very dated, and also had a white bezel...
Why don’t you get another 8GB and a 10 port hub for that money?
You also get gigabit ethernet. Still not worth the $200. I agree it should be 16GB for that price.

Wow that looks so... disappointing! 8 GB starting RAM (non-upgradeable obviously) even for the top spec model, and no discreet GPU? After they've discontinued the iMac Pro? So this is basically a Mac Mini with a built in display. Which is fine for many people but what if you want to do more serious video grading or editing, and you want to replace your iMac Pro or Mac Pro? Your only option is the... wait there are still no M1 Macs with a discreet GPU, or a GPU you can upgrade, or compatibility with an external GPU whatsoever.

And they're super ugly too. Any reason they left out the only color everyone is crazy about, space grey? And is there really some law of physics that prevents the removal of the chin that everyone has been hating so much? Like can't they just put the stuff in there behind the display so you can't see it at least? After so many years with the same design I was expecting them to at least remove the chin.

PS: And white bezels? Damn. The reason displays traditionally have a black bezel is so that you don't see them. That's also why in a color grading studio, the walls are dark grey and you also work with the lights dimmed: you don't want anything bright in your field of vision. As much as they nailed the M1 MacBook Air, this seems like a huge mistake.

Oh and a power brick, for a desktop computer. With a proprietary magnetic cable that transmits Ethernet over the power cable... You had a freaking standard 3 pin power connector, no power brick, Ethernet built right into the computer, and now you have this. I bet Apple had a hard time finding a replacement for Johny Ive but really?

The chin looks fine. Don’t y’all remember the renders from a while ago?

No chin would just look like an iPad. There needs to be some visual difference from the front.
When people say the bezels need to go, they literally mean that chin too.

No one would complain if this looked like a giant iPad on a stand. It's sleek and modern.

That being said, I have a feeling the "Pro" version of this will do something close.

Only for the $1500+ models.
Ah, well that’s...a choice. I don’t most people will care but to be honest if you’re doing something that really requires Ethernet this probably isn’t the iMac mode that’s geared towards you anyway. Still disappointing to hear though.

The only thing that could pardon them would be exact idea you stated. To make it hip and fun for new consumers. I hope the 32-inch (or whatever larger size) version will look more pro, more like XDR display, will have black bezels and come only in space gray or silver.
