The solution might be SE.
Maybe we need MacBook Pro SE, 2015 chassis with the latest internals.
Then we might need a new CEO. Someone do not cry during the event and cares much about function not fashion. Steve Jobs SE.

ps: I have passed to iMac since it is still safer. However, I guess there is simply nobody left cares about Mac hardware at Apple.

Can Apple just admit the design is flawed and move to something reliable in the next gen?

Or perhaps bring back the old retina MacBook Pro to sell as a different range - put the latest internals in it, replace thunderbolt ports and USB A with USB-C thunderbolt 3, put in Touch ID and an equivalent display to the new Macs.

I'd actually prefer to keep at least one USB A as I still mostly have USB A devices, and bring back Magsafe! Although, I would honestly prefer just going back to exactly the ports that were on the previous Retina model, and add one or two USB C to that. Also, add an internal M.2 slot in the computer so that storage can still be upgraded beyond Apples soldered storage. This machine would be an instant buy from me.

I was thinking maybe this issue is just amplified on a forum where people discuss Macs. Now the 2018 13 inch MBP I got my cousin for Christmas is having issues with the space bar double spacing. The 2018 models need an extended warranty and this keyboard must go. It is just shameful and pathetic at this point.

Too late for me, I got a refund on my £1949 512GB TB 13" 2018 model... Refund on the £399 AppleCare too.

Mac mini all the way! It took me a long time to spend that much on a device in the first place, it'll take a long time before I spend that with Apple again after the experience with the MBP
My 15 year old Dell keyboard works pretty well with the 2018 mac mini ;) The magic trackpad 2 is truly amazing though.

The macbook pro we purchased in late 2015 works like a charm ...

My wife and I have 2017 MBPs. We've used them HEAVILY for almost 11 months now. My wife uses hers every day for HOURS for her PhD. I have had 0 problems, my wife has had 0 problems. Other 2016-2017 MBP owners we know have had 0 problems. I do not know anyone in person who has a problem, but I don't know many 2016-2018 MBP owners (under 5).

I'm a 160+wpm typist and a huge mechanical keyboard hobbyist. I wasn't a huge fan of the keyboard when I initially got the laptop but I've adapted to it, used it for 11 months now, and have grown to like it. I can actually type on it REALLY fast now, the energy required to type on it vs other keyboards with more key travel is a lot less than you'd think. I don't mind it now. My wife likes this keyboard too and types out lengthy papers with it.

I've grown to like the keyboard. It takes a change from how you type on a normal keyboard. Once you adapt, it is quite pleasant and you can type really fast for hours.

I've never cleaned my wife's keyboard - I do clean mine now and then but I haven't bothered for months now. We've had 0 issues. Glad to see Apple standing behind their product and giving us 4? years of keyboard replacements. We plan on keeping these laptops for 6 years at least.

We absolutely love our laptops - this is definitely the best laptop I've ever had.

Glad to see Apple addressing this issue.

So in your experience if you don’t presently have this issue, others may not be so fortunate. Plus, it could be an issue for you down the road.

If you are concerned about the energy used by your fingers to type on a keyboard daily, I believe you have bigger problems. Typing fast for what when you have a brief requirement, someone would think that you sit in a typist room churning out standard issued letters and documents during an 8 hour period. Give me a break, no one I know types for a continues 8 hours or longer and yes that includes PhD level academia and journalists. Minutes here and there, sure then a break and back at it or maybe later. 8 hours continuous typing, colour me a skeptic to your claim

I fail to see why people should trust a single poster that owns one laptop at a time with their hard earned money. It takes more than a love of a product to defend something as absolute as you are saying.
So far, I am looking at 10% return rate within 10 months at my place.
Which is, by searching the Google, average failure rate for Apple and very few others, and below the average for most manufacturers.

The real number is that 100% of MacBooks with butterfly keyboard are affected. Because the keyboard design is fundamentally flawed.

They keep flawed design for three years, try to cover issues up with some half assed “fix” and lie to customers that it was just for sound dampening... and give them instructional video how to clean their keyboard - as if it’s the problem that we are all messy slobs..

didn’t even bother bringing in my 2016 mbp yet what they gonna do put another broken keyboard inside?
I take it as a 4K lesson to not buy apple computers anymore

Never had to clean my 2014/15 MBP keyboard ever. Works like a charm.

The previous generation MBP is certainly thin enough, for me even the pre-retina MacBook Pro is thin enough and both have a great keyboard. All that thinnes is horrible. Get the old form factor with old keyboard back please.

Exactly. I was happy with my 2013 MBP, I had no need for it to be thinner or smaller. I just recently found my old external Apple keyboard (same design as the older MBP keyboards) and it feels so much better to type on. I really don't understand how anyone can test the 2016-2018 keyboard and think that it is anywhere close to the old one.

I'm a C# programmer. I spend all day on a computer - I've spent 16 hours on a keyboard before (obviously, with restroom breaks, lunch, etc...). Be skeptical all you want, I probably spend more time on a computer than most people. My health is suffering/reflects because of it, so I'm not proud of it.

When you spend 16 (or 8) hours programming, a reduction in energy required to type goes a long ways. This is why I can't use mechanical keyboards anymore because while they're fun to type on for awhile, the muscles in my hands have adapted to low throw keyboards these days.

I know MANY people who type for more than 8 hours a day... Kinda surprised at your statement.

And agreed, others here clearly have had the issue, which is why I'm glad Apple is addressing it.

I really liked my 2015 MBA's keyboard. Imo, that keyboard was near perfection - I used that HEAVILY for 3 years. I am jealous of your 2014/15 MBP keyboard. Wish I had kept it. :(

Had problems with my 2017 keyboard. Took it in and received a brand new 2018 model from Apple. No problems since.

i worked in a start up where i was programming for 20 hours straight. sure i took 1-2 minute bathroom breaks but we were in a crunch to get an app out ASAP

Too often I see people on here willing to dismiss this issue because they themselves have never experienced it. But you are exactly right.

My 2011 17" MacBook Pro currently shows no signs of GPU failure, but that doesn't mean it isn't a fundamental flaw that can potentially affect every single one of these 2011 15"/17" MBPs. It's clear the same is true for the butterfly keyboard issues.
