These are new so why are they not qualified for free repairs? For the asking prices, I should not experience any issues this early. If they are defective, it should be replaced free of charge.
None of them are out of the 1 year standard warranty at this point. They all qualify for free repairs right now.

I thought having those rubbers would help fix the keyboard issue.

It most likely helps with the dust but it also traps heat.

Many people are thinking that the issue now with the 2018 keyboards is failure due to heat (either the membrane warping or the butterfly mechanism failing).

Apple has neither confirmed or denied that heat is an issue.

I had an issue with my 1st gen and what a disaster that repair was. From a keyboard swap to pretty much replacing my whole laptop. why, i don't know. Case logic board display. It was working fine. NO cosmetic damage etc. I think something happened to it during the repair.

I'd actually prefer to keep at least one USB A as I still mostly have USB A devices, and bring back Magsafe! Although, I would honestly prefer just going back to exactly the ports that were on the previous Retina model, and add one or two USB C to that. Also, add an internal M.2 slot in the computer so that storage can still be upgraded beyond Apples soldered storage. This machine would be an instant buy from me.

I'd suggest the same but I felt like I'd get flamed for suggesting that :p

But yes definitely bring back MagSafe.

I've also read about this. A lot of the posts where people complain about the keyboard having problems, I find that they're not using the TB model. The TB model has an extra fan. Both my wife and I have had 0 problems on our 2017 TB models and we've done some pretty intensive CPU / heat processes before as well. I do wonder how much this affects the failure.

As a 2017 MBP owner, BRING BACK MAGSAFE. That's a big thing I miss from my 2015 MBA. :(

i worked in a start up where i was programming for 20 hours straight. sure i took 1-2 minute bathroom breaks but we were in a crunch to get an app out ASAP

So you are risking your health and not eating or taking frequent breaks. Yep priorities need to be addressed. Spend 20 hours in front of a computer then later sleep in a hospital bed, due to not looking after ones health. Shame what some people do to themselves.

Agreed. Programmers such as myself do this all the time. It is very common. But it is sadly a requirement more times than not because programming projects are often times very badly managed in my experience. But it is a living. My wife gets to go to PhD school and we can afford to live in California and play with a few Apple products.

I don't even like very short travel keys when they work let alone when they are failure prone.
Even Gruber calls it an epic fail:

I consider these keyboards the worst products in Apple history. MacBooks should have the best keyboards in the industry; instead they’re the worst. They’re doing lasting harm to the reputation of the MacBook brand.

My first reaction to these keyboard issues was to consider it probably overblown (for example I owned one those iPhone 4 that supposedly you couldn't make a call with and I loved it).
Then I tried one of those keyboards. They suck. Hard. There isn't another way of putting it. Almost any cheap Windows laptop has a nicer to type on keyboard.
And I am talking about fully functioning keyboards.

My wife and I have 2017 MBPs. We've used them HEAVILY for almost 11 months now. My wife uses hers every day for HOURS for her PhD. I have had 0 problems, my wife has had 0 problems. Other 2016-2017 MBP owners we know have had 0 problems. I do not know anyone in person who has a problem, but I don't know many 2016-2018 MBP owners (under 5).

I'm a 160+wpm typist and a huge mechanical keyboard hobbyist. I wasn't a huge fan of the keyboard when I initially got the laptop but I've adapted to it, used it for 11 months now, and have grown to like it. I can actually type on it REALLY fast now, the energy required to type on it vs other keyboards with more key travel is a lot less than you'd think. I don't mind it now. My wife likes this keyboard too and types out lengthy papers with it.

I've grown to like the keyboard. It takes a change from how you type on a normal keyboard. Once you adapt, it is quite pleasant and you can type really fast for hours.

I've never cleaned my wife's keyboard - I do clean mine now and then but I haven't bothered for months now. We've had 0 issues. Glad to see Apple standing behind their product and giving us 4? years of keyboard replacements. We plan on keeping these laptops for 6 years at least.

We absolutely love our laptops - this is definitely the best laptop I've ever had.

Glad to see Apple addressing this issue.

That’s the thing with love, it makes You blind ... until ... it’s over, then comes the hard fall aka sticky keys

lets NOT go that far, macbooks are still the best laptops on the market and always work as they should. sure these keyboard problems are a pain but apple fixes them and i'd take a few slight fixable keyboard problems over another brand who's laptop breaks down within 6 months

GET IT, i got it in the (rose) gold color and i love it!
Which brands breakdown after six months?

i haven't had any keyboard issues on my macbook pro 2018

Exactly. Loving every bit of mine. I just pulled out the AppleCare, on this purchase, to be safe.
When I bought a cover off of amazon, it came with a keyboard cover/sleeve. See if that helps some with debris. Been following the threads in the MacBook Air section closely. Rock-ON!

At least they're Apple products. The 4? year keyboard warranty now on the 2017s and our AppleCare+. I'll definitely be watching this - hence me commenting on threads like this. The failure rate is low, but like smarter posters than me have posted here - there does seem to be a keyboard problem.

Er, get a better job then? There's no reason that you should be working 20 hours a day, ever.

I have a 2017 MBP and it runs considerably cooler than the 2018 model (one of the reasons I bought a 2017 instead of a 2018).

The 2016 and 2017 MBP do not have the membrane so there can be no membrane problems due to heat. It does however allow dust to get in which I believe is the primary cause of failures in 2016 / 2017 keyboards.

All 2018 MBP have the membrane and run hot. The membrane should keep the dust out unless it's losing its seal due to heat.

In any case, it looks like the 2018 keyboard also has problems.

Are you ****ing kidding me? After three years, a $2400 laptop continues to have issues because Apple wants to be different ― nobody else needed the keyboard to be different!

Agreed. I sold my MacBook Pro with second generation buttery keyboard and went and bought a “like new” 2015 MacBook Pro. All for the keyboard. I can live without some ports. But I actually need the keyboard. My company will buy me a new laptop whenever I need one. Still rolling with the 2015.
