wow... more iPad news... for change

really sick of hearing about the iPad. MacBook Pro and Mac Pro and LED panels are what Apple should be focusing on. They really let their business slide where it counts.

Also, in regards, it may mean that some lucky people can look forward to receiving an iPad early. Share, please. I can barely hide my excitement about this new format.

Have people been complaining?

My bank's credit card early fraud warning department just called my home number. (I called them back using the phone number on my credit card statement). They wanted to know if a charge (in the amount of an iPad + tax) from Apple was valid or not. I buy lots of stuff from Apple (MacBooks, iPhones, etc.) using this CC.

Why would the bank suddenly think yet another charge from Apple would be suspicious? Could someone have stolen the Apple Store's commercial account credentials? Is Apple asking banks to check because of fraudulent orders?

...very strange...

That's the thing though - It just came out today and I ordered it March 12th - trust me I noticed I was suddenly down a grand.

Same thing happened to me. I ordered on 3/12 with my debit card and only $1 was done as a pre-auth, but nothing came out after that. Now, today, the full amount is pending on my account. I still have a late April ship date.

They're PRO-ACTIVELY Reversing the 3G Authorizations

Apple Pre-Auth'd the 3G's in error. Apple Online Supervisor just got an email stating to do whatever it takes to reverse pre-auths - especially if they are debit cards and have emptied someone's bank account early. The pre-auths for the 3G's should have been placed a few days prior to shipping as with ALL mail order items.

Supervisor also SPECIFICALLY SAID that there is zero expectations that the 3G will be shipping any earlier than LATE APRIL as planned.

it'd be great if they shipped just a tad early (wifi). i've got two on order and leave friday night for a three week holiday.

Charged

My Fidelity Checking Account was charged $745 roughly for the iPad 64GB Wi-Fi today... not just a pre-authorization... I ordered in the first 20 minutes of pre-order...

I ordered the case as well but no charge for that yet...

I am assuming it will ship soon and FedEx will just hold on to it until it is April 3rd... I cannot not imagine Apple messing up their official release date... but I sure hope they do.

Ah well, too bad for all those 3G dreamers.

It didn't make sense that Apple would ship something three weeks early -- something they swore would appear at the end of April. It made no sense from a supply management standpoint.

There is more to this story than revealed in the article. I'm an AAdvantage CitiCard holder with more than 1M miles (not bragging, just saying I've been around for a while and have made a lot of transactions) and my iPad purchase was suspended by the credit card company due to "high risk activity".

I received a notice from Apple that my credit card transaction wasn't accepted so I tried repeatedly to reauthorize the transaction from the apple store. I then logged into to my credit card account and noticed my account was suspended. I called them and after a bunch of security questions I had to tell them to approve the charge from the Apple Store.

Citicard doesn't do this kind of thing very often so it brings to question what did Apple do to trigger these adverse credit card events???

Good lord, I'm glad I didn't use my Citi card for this one. That said, I've never had a problem with my Citi card for any other type of online/store charge. Strange that the apple store freaks them out.

Yes it is and this thread is about preauthorization holds for ipad orders. In no way did your post have anything whatsoever to do with this topic.

Come on guy... You are the troll here!

Well, I won't be unhappy if it ships early, but I'm guessing some wifi only model buyers will be pissed if they really wanted the 3g but couldn't wait. We will know in about a week. I'm fine waiting, but if it comes early I won't complain:D

I never take what a csr says to heart.

But, it's likely it was an error. I hope it was not.

Apple Pre-Auth'd the 3G's in error.

Now it makes sense.

Apple jumped the gun and charged 1000's of people who didn't expect charges or even have room on their credit/debit cards until next month, closer to the expected ship date for the 3G models. That created a tidal wave of complaints, so now the CC companies are marking the entire batch of charges as bad, since, for some reason, they can't seem to tell the wifi iPad orders from the 3G iPad orders.

Or at least that's one hypothesis...

And some (soon ex) manager at Apple will feel the wrath of Jobs.

Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but that seems like a huge "mistake" to make. I could see pre-auths on the card, but from my experience (and the experience of others), an initial pre-auth of $1 was made.

I can't see a $200 billion company making an error of that magnitude. I'm sure there a number of safeguards in place to ensure something like that doesn't happen.

Again, I'm probably being optimistic, but maybe they got the 3G models approved earlier than expected? Don't forget, it's easier to exceed the customer's expectations than to explain why they didn't meet them.

"Prepared for Shipment" doesn't mean that shipping is imminent. In the past, people have had orders stay in that phase for days or weeks. What it really means is that the order is locked in and cannot be changed or cancelled.

Hey, some people here can find anything to complain about.

They could probably receive a free gold-plated iPad autographed by Steve Jobs and they'd still bitch and moan about how it doesn't have eSATA, or the latest Nvidia graphics chips, removable battery, blah blah blah.

These are people with unhappiness issues. They are probably emotionally unstable, with a deep seated lack of self-confidence. Their insecurities are publicly manifested as entitlement behavior.

this is so so true...and yet so so sad.

Here is the Wikipedia article on Preauthorization Holds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorization_hold

It's not so easy to reverse the hold. It would be easier to let the hold 'fall off.'
