Maybe this is a warning for Apple. When I graduated in 1960, Edwin H Land was the commencement speaker. Where is the Polaroid Corporation now?

Interesting example. Polaroid, at the time, was the epitome of a technology-first company. We've since learned that such companies have a tendency to become myopic and overly in love with their own innovations, and eventually fail. Polaroid died from trying to beat instant, chemical-based photographic processes into the ground, while the market was providing viable, and eventually superior, alternatives.

Apple has never depended on creating major technological advances themselves. Their model has been to wed emerging technologies to emerging market needs. Different kind of company.

Apple's profit margin is lower than Google's or Microsoft's.

Irrelevant statement. Apple is first and foremost a hardware manufacturing based business. Neither of the other two are. Margins are totally different for hardware, software, and services. There's no point in comparing margins between businesses so radically different.

Really, guys, you're doing it wrong. This is a thread about Cook's commencement speech for college graduates. It naturally follows that instead of reviewing Mr. Cook's said speech, we must endeavor ourselves to finding everything wrong with his performance here as well as his performance as Apple's CEO for the past few years.

We need a deeper level of abstraction and distraction from the main point here. For example, Mr. Cook reflected on a certain period in his youth, that which like many of us, was filled with confusion and apprehension and uncertainity. My response? Where the hell is the damn Finder for iOS?

Tim Cooks original draft:

"...And to you, class of 2017. You are the college generation that proved that Apple was so far ahead that we literally didn't have to put any effort into improving our products during your entire college careers! And with that minimal effort we were able to charge you more and make ourselves more profitable...

Let's give it up for Profits!!!"

This sums it up perfectly!!!!

So Cook's way of serving humanity is to have slave labor in China make their products while Americans go without jobs?
Odd way of serving humanity. I guess he feels his using Apple's platform for supporting LGBT causes and left wing nonsense makes up for it.

I'm not sure why Americans would want unskilled labor.

are you joking?
you'd rather it sit in a subsidiary somewhere benefiting nobody other than the fund manager who earns millions instead of it buying ambulances, or building schools or infrastructure?
sure there are inefficiencies, but i cannot think of a greater inefficiency than it not doing anything.
Duh of course I'm joking. It's a civic responsibility to take potshots at our federal government for the crappy things they do with our tax money. ;) And the things you mentioned are largely paid for with local taxes, which as far as I know Apple does not shirk.

While the federal government does indeed provide many needed services and does a pretty impressive job protecting our country, it also uses our tax money not just inefficiently but borderline psychotically in oh so many ways.

I could list some of the more egregious transgressions committed with our money but that would deviate too far from the thread.

Our tax money does some good and some bad. I'm snarking on the bad. Are you seriously taking my post seriously and literally? Please don't do that. Lightning will strike, volcanoes will erupt, cats and dogs will live in sin if people start taking me seriously. Our whole weekend will be ruined!

Excuse me, my Apple Watch has just dinged and told me I must go Breathe. Not lower case breathe. I'm talking about serious breathing with a capital B. I have to look at this little moving flower thingy and everything.

Why would you be shaking your head? Cook can have a little humor too. It's normal. Not everything Cook does has to focus on innovation.

I must have missed everything he does that focuses on innovation. Or anything....most of the news is him having a go at the competition, lecturing us about morale values, or talking about a non existent pipeline....he lies a lot . He is just like a broken record.

Yeah....i miss steve, his words actually had value and substance....I started watching cook from the 7 minute mark and stopped....never got to what he said about microsoft....truth is , microsoft is out innovating him.

Excellent point being the homed, a very poor copy of what amazon and google are offering while completely missing the point that people do not want another overpriced speaker from apple/beats, they want an excellent siri assistant....this is the cook apple, following and yet too arrogant to realise the competition has done it better, in the past apple was leading....by a large margin.

sorry rant over...

Listened to the speech. Though it was well presented.

I'm not always Tim's biggest fan but he did good this time.

…Minimizing their tax burden is disgusting. We need to fund our ongoing wars and Apple needs to pay up.

So: are you saying these forum members are wrong in their estimation of Apple as a company and its product lineup? We predicted the iPod failure. Where is the iPod today? That's right. We were right. It was overpriced and a useless toy. MacBook Air was a joke in 2008. And it's barely updated today. Failure. Apple is too arrogant. Wireless is not the future. My father always told me Wi-Fi was a gimmick. Slower and limited range. Bluetooth is the same.

Apple needs to focus on REAL computers.

MacBook ($500), MacBook Pro ($800)
iMac ($500), MacPro ($800)

All Blu-ray, all SD card slots, all Ethernet ports, all USB, all headphone jacks. Innovation.
Devastating to watch Mac sales plummet. We need real innovation like 30-day battery life, Blu-ray, 8K display, 5 TB drive, all in a light and thin aluminum body for only $600.

The iMac Pro should be $1,000 AT MOST. I can build a PC with the same specs for less than the crazy $5,000 they are asking for. HomePod should be $50.

Until then I am voting with my wallet and proudly giving my money to real innovative artists like Samsung and Asus. They DESTROY everything Apple makes.

This was hilarious. Even more hilarious is how many forum members didn't get it.

Invalid excuse.

It seems that his message didn't reach many of you. Don't be cynical. Apple is business. Cook is a person. He speaking to graduates. He is speaking to and of their better nature. His commencement address is supposed to inspirational and aspirational. I think it was a fine speech.
Contrast that to Trump's address to the Coast Guard Academy. It was all about him (Trump).

PS: Cook doesn't have to apologize for his success or Apple's success.

SMH! Another cringe moment from this Guy! Tim cook keep Focus on innovation rather than making fun of other companies.
I totally agree.
Apple is the copy cat company now. tim Cook is largely responsible for there lack of innovation.
New watch straps and 'right on' politics are no substitute.
He needs to be sacked so a proper techno nerd can get things going again.

What a load of crap. Apple, like Microsoft, is in the business of making money. How do they do it? Technology.

Steve stole plenty of tech and made it his own. Why? Money. Businesses compete. That's what they do. Somebody wins? That means somebody else loses. It's cutthroat. None of these businesses come together for the greater good. NONE OF THEM.

Now, here's Tom with the weather.
