For the same price, we can buy a last-year MacBook. There's really never a point for such comparisons, but I would never be able to appreciate a man eyeing my coffee. o_O

poor comments by cook. ironically, feels similar to the comments that idiot congressman made that people should pay for healthcare instead of buying a new iphone.

I was disappointed to hear these comments from cook. Why not just say "it's a great phone and technological advancement. if you can afford it, you won't be disappointed. while we understand that it may too expensive for some, we offer phones in a wide range so that everyone should be able to find one they can afford."

He hasn't got much choice. Their prices are now so high they would be out of range for millions of their current customers if they dropped the older models and only sold the newest releases.

Their latest financial results don't really support your argument.

Personally I'd like to see them doing more of the 2017 iPad (a fantastic bargain with great tech for those who don't need a pro) and the iPhone SE when it originally launched. That's better than keeping around ageing tech that struggles to handle the latest software. Everyone who buys an Apple product new from Apple deserves a great experience.

It is not just a phone.

Unless you are the only person in the world who bought an iPhone to make phone calls and nothing else?

The latest and greatest iPhones are super computers. They outperform most Intel PC's now. It is incredible.

We are not all the same. These crazy people you cite may use it for basic purposes. I make phone calls, text, and in a pinch I use it for a brief email. It is handy for directions and as a camera. In an extreme pinch I might Google search, or purchase something from a store app.

The 6+ does all of these things great. Also the Intel PC comparison is laughable. I don't care what SOC is in there, as long as it has that tiny battery, any PC comparison is silly. Regardless, ingnoring that and it's on par with mediocre notebooks.

Coffee is $2-3 at Starbucks, less at places the average joe would buy (McD's, etc.). You'd effectively have to cut off most coffee consumption to reach an iPhone X, that's a stretch. Now if he's referring to people like myself who regularly spend over $4-5 on coffee each time because I go to boutique shops, then we aren't the target demographic for this question. The iPhone X would have no significant financial impact on me and would only be a couple hundred dollars more than a regular iPhone 8+ at max capacity. I don't want one because my iPhone 7+ isn't missing anything and the carrier promotions this year stink. I don't think Apple was anticipating the latter, given that carrier promotions in the past have knocked off up to $650 with qualifying trade-in.

He isn't suggesting that. He's just breaking it down to show that depending on your perspective and paying monthly, it can be reasonably affordable. This is a device you would be using every single day.

Fyi, breaking the price done by per day, the total price is the same. You aren't getting any discount, it is only mental gymnastics that's going on to justify the purchase.

If you buy the iPhone x, it should be because you want it, not because it is cheaper than buying coffee everyday.

What do you use all of that super computing power for animated emojis?

A lot. There are days when I do my entire job from my iPhone. That's email, that's putting together important presentations, editing spreadsheets, reviewing spec sheets, trading financials, I've edited video and photos from my iPhone, fixed php code, etc. It can do it all, and my iPhone X will do it all better now thanks to the all-new bionic processors.

The £300 cheaper iPhone 8 has exactly the same processing power and will also do everything you've listed.

Well you are one of the few still using old fashioned computers. For most people now, their only computer is their iPhone. Or they have have an iPad too.

But yes, if you are happy doing most of your stuff from a laptop or desktop - and you are mainly using your iPhone as a phone - then I concede you don't need to upgrade. But you are an outlier.

Of course they do. The financials show profit. If Apple only sold just top tier gear, many could not afford it .

The 2017 iPad is poor value. You are better off with an iPad Air 2.

I'd like to buy a new iPhone with AppleCare and a case from apple. I used to be able to do that a few years ago and see great value, today it's £1450 - that is not a great experience..... it's actually very poor.

I'll try my X tomorrow, and unless is amazing it's going back for being such a silly cost.... I've always bought a case a AC .... £1450..... Tim cooks apple is becoming an exclusive fashion company :(

Dig into the ASP's and you see their business is not being held together by the masses who buy the products for the poor.

Yesterday's results showed Apple was selling far more iPhone 8s than was expected for example.

ALL of Apple's phones currently sold by Apple do pretty much the EXACT SAME THING. The new ones do it better and faster. The fact you think older iPhones are only good for making calls just ads to the stupidity of Tim's comment.

Show me where the BIONIC chip will make the line ring any faster on the other end.
