I don't know if you're joking but I 100% believe this is where they will go next. No need to make a decent Mac Pro modular tower if they can just add the "Pro" moniker to an iMac, claim it meets the needs of the "future" professional and then silently discontinue the current Mac Pro.
There is no way a mobile CPU can match the performance of a desktop CPU. iMac Pro (if ever released) will be underpowered machine.

And right now I'm not terribly thrilled about my Windows choices as far as computers themselves are concerned.
Agreed. At the risk segueing to a hackintosh discussion, the thought of running Windows and related hardware ( i.e. Dell, HP etc. ) does not leave me in the least bit sanguine.

Well actually the classic MP is a very nice looking case as well. Just as much a work of art as the trashcan. But I do think it is proof that it was a very good design. I wonder how hard it would be internally to just swallow pride and release that old case with new internals. It must be hard because they should have done that a year ago. They've lost customers and 10s of millions of dollars of profit by not releasing a Pro machine in 2016.
I bought a G5 tower in 2006. The design is wonderful and when I first opened it up to do some upgrades, I was amazed at the work that apparently Ive had done. That machine still functions for me today.
I felt that the redesign of the Pro was to toss those aside that felt innovation was dead. Oh, and, gee..was the nMP cheaper to ship because of size...guess we'll never know...except Timmy the Bean Counter.
Bring back power and the ability to upgrade and customize..although Tim may feel the market too small, it has the ability to expand in other ways.
C'mom Tim..Have some COURAGE! ( of course he won't be reading this as he heads towards the windmills )
OK, I'm done now..back to my regular scheduled glass of wine...(no, not whine )

> “The pro area is very important to us. The creative area is very important to us in particular.”

That has not been true for a while, but maybe it’s a signal of an about-face after hearing our complaints. Form factor has been ridiculously important to them—to the extent of degrading performance, utility and value for money.

It is incredible as lies and lies by repeating the same phrases from advertising, already spent a long time ago "Apple" brand, now only hear repeated phrases and then take the same of last year, recycled designs, software errors and boring, was thrilling to see an Apple keynote, now is to see a zombie in the stage show.

Couldn't agree more.

How are the engineers at Apple getting their work done?! What computers are they using? Is Jony Ive still using a 2013 Mac pro? Don't tell me he switched to PC. Maybe just maybe then they're waiting for updated Macs just like the rest of us and they genuinely forgot they're the ones who make them.

Want some new exciting ideas send a spy into Microsofts camp. Long term Mac user but really you have let us down and all boils down this slim is king *****.
I am horrified that I have on my to-do list to call the local Microsoft Store (i still feel dirty typing it) to see when they have Surface Studio for my artist daughter to try out. I don't know a bigger MS hater than myself in the 90s, yet here I am, 20 years on. But I go where the tools and products are that meet our needs. Have been Machead since 1995. First Apple II in 1978. Hated idiocy of PC IRQs, etc., and MS malignant rampancy. Helped out volunteering at CompUSA selling Life Saver iMacs, etc., but MS are offering something interesting - at least they are /trying/ to do something new, and for the first time in 5 years or more, I am excited about a desktop product - and it isn't Apple - it is Microsoft. Microsoft.

I still have my MacPro 2011 tower. I added SSD's and maxed out the RAM. Still fast as a rocket. I did not updated to the trash can model. I hope Apple can come back with a desktop that allows consumers to update internals and keep a longer productive life. That said, it goes against the current Apple strategy of soldering and not allowing updates. It's sad. I want to have an optimistic view but damn.....I don't see it happening.

This is really a good point...If Apple Engineers aren't being pushed to develop the best hardware and software, how are they able to want to strive for what should be considered 'Best in Class'.
I think my maxed 2012 Mac Mini outruns the sealed 2014..but wait...this is 2017...????

It's a good thing you kept your older MacPro. Just checked Everymac.com and was shocked to learn that the trashcan Mac Pro had a SLOWER bus than the MacPro ver.1. How does that even make any sense?

iPad Pro, iPhone Pro, and ryzen-based macbook pros! It's gonna be great!

What, am I missing something? I.. nah I don't think so. Maybe they'll introduce an iMac Pro. They could make the screen a touchscreen/tablet like the Surface Studio!

That should address all the concerns pros have, I think. Unless I'm forgetting something. I can't be forgetting something though can I?

On the non-Pro side I could see them making a fanless Mac Mini that uses a USB-C power brick for power. That could be interesting. lol

"You will see us do more in the XYZ area," Cook said. "The XYZ area is very important to us. The XYZ area is very important to us in particular."

XYZ = [pro] | [creative] | [education] | [automotive] | [smart watch] | [mobile] | [Mac] | [Emoji] | [security] | [quality]

I knew this was gonna be full of people saying he's a liar...damned if you do and damned if you don't!
Maybe so, but at this point, if anyone feels like me, I do not trust or put stock in anything Cook says about "amazing products in the pipeline". I've heard it now literally for years and there really has been no "amazing" there. I don't care to be amazed, really, but stop with the gaslighting, already. Put up or shut up. Actions speak so much louder than words and so far their actions have spoken dead silence.

With the advent of AMD's new Ryzen and Vega architectures (both of which I am using to build a desktop with), and the open source Vulkan API which takes advantage of multiple cores, Apple could disrupt the PC gaming and workstation market by making sleek, powerful machines that can outperform even the most expensive Intel processors.
