You'll never come back? What if Apple releases Macs built using more of their own in-house chips that offer unprecedented value not available in the Windows world? What about APFS that promises to radically improve file management in Apple's ecosystem? What about the very obvious security advantages of macOS and iOS over the alternatives?

I say never say never. You did what you had to do, and it's understandable, but don't hold a grudge at your own disadvantage.

Thanks for your input. You seem unrealistically optimistic and I doubt such technology or innovations are coming to the Mac. It also sounds absurd to use the term 'unprecedented value' and Apple in the same sentence isn't it? I would love if all of this was true and yes perhaps I would consider coming back. I agree about security, and despite Windows 10 being a lot more usable, there is still a higher risk. Admittedly, we still have one last iMac that we use for email/Internet, and most of the PC's are offline using mainly the internal network. On a positive note, let's keep dreaming nonetheless...

We shall see. Apple has squandered a tremendous amount of goodwill in recent years with professionals, prosumers, power users, enthusiasts and ilk. A tipping point came with the introduction of the trashcan Mac Pro when Phill Schiller stated, "Can't innovate anymore, my ass!" While it was an impressive feat of engineering, it did not serve the needs of professionals; thus all Apple did was innovate itself out of that market. Dumb.
I had a 2006 Mac Pro and wanted to upgrade to 'true 64 bit' to run the new OS. Had been waiting and waiting. Finally after 3 years since update, Schiller arrogantly boasts about 'innovation' with that aberration. I was crushed and in disbelief what they had done to the upgradeable, configurable, tower. Immediately ordered refurb of latest current model, figuring they would soon be in short supply. Have stood pat ever since. I can't use an all in one. At some point this machine will not be able to run latest OS, and later the latest iTunes. Later, my old itunes will no longer work with the latest iOS. At that point what is keeping me on an iPhone that I cant use with my desktop? Where ate their vaunted iphone profit shares, then? Ok, maybe no big deal to them, but at that point I've got nowhere else to go but to exit the ecosystem.

It will be too little, too late Tim (assuming - out of good will - that you're not lying). Pro people are already switching.

Oh, and next time, make sure you'll inform pro users along with the shareholders. Cause they are the ones that need to plan ahead. Cause, you know, their income depends from it. However, I doubt there ever will be a 'next time'.

The worst scenario is not that Tim is lying, but he thinks they have a good pro pipeline and it's middling and not what the market wants and needs.

The new pro laptops and lack of new, modern displays for a cohesive experience is Exhibit A for how Apple completely misses the boat on their core audience nowadays.

(BTW, my new MBP crashes 50% of the time I unplug it from LG display. $4K of new hardware behaving like the junk of the PC/Microsoft Windows mess I left behind. Someone needs to explain to apple this is why we came here in the first place.)

& countless thousands of people have plans on bailing Apple if this doesn't pan out.

2017 is the year of reckoning. Patience has been drawn too thin. If golden eggs don't drop this year, the flock is gunna fly the coop. The omen has been written on every website that mentions the word "Mac".
I feel WWDC is their last chance before the trickle becomes a steafy flood of departure from ecosystem.

Please, Please, Please stop using number of days to emphasise how long a product has been out without an update to - it sounds so dumb and doesn't make your point any stronger in fact it does the opposite. Thank you

Would you recommend listing by how many generations of CPU/GPU behind apple products are?

Days is a useful metric.

yeah, exodus to iMacs.
that's a modern day professional computer which runs creative software as good as anything else you'll find out there..

most creative pros are using iMacs and mbps.. (well, most pros on macs.. most pros in general are on computers which are similarly spec'd as an imac).. fast quads with decent ram and gpu..

that's going to run most, if not all, creative software better than a $10k multicore behemoth at a 3rd of the price.

idk, i think you might be confusing 'salty pros' with 'salty armchair quarterback forum posters'..

I'm not even a pro and I need more than 4 cores and 16Gb of memory. (3d Art - sorry but it is incredibly painful on an iMac - assuming of course, that you don't burn it out when rendering.)

Whatever you think of him- why would he lie? It would completely ruin his credibility if in, say, 2 years it's clear Apple has abandoned its Pro users.

But apple abandoned Pro years over 2 years ago. He is twisting and redefining what pro means. Trust me apple has abandoned the pro user a long time ago in favour of profits. Now they are trying to tell users that Pro means buying a device that has maximium profits and sales for them. Remember this is coming from a man pushing an iPad as a replacement for a Mac....imagine what pro means in his head.

He is giving us Politician replies, some of us view that as lies, others view that as positive news, your mileage will vary. For me he has not said anytime of substance for years, he will continue to maximise profits which is not building hardware for pros, but itoys with pro naming convention so he can charge about one hundred dollars more per device

Blablablablabla...
I didn't even bother reading the article. So sick of this crap. We had to make such major changes for my business because of Apple disgusting neglecting. Switched to Windows, don't like it, but at least it works and the computers are powerful. I miss mac, but will never come back because of the garbage we have to put up with.

And this is the truth. At least with windows you control your destiny and can plan. With apple this childish crap of not updating for such long periods of time , and if they upgrade is not a way to run a business . It's just an itoy company now :( made for the home consumer .

It's a good thing you kept your older MacPro. Just checked Everymac.com and was shocked to learn that the trashcan Mac Pro had a SLOWER bus than the MacPro ver.1. How does that even make any sense?
I did some Photoshop speed tests here on MR and my MP was literally 0.5 seconds slower than the new MP. If you configure the old MP on the right way you can pretty much get great speeds. It's too bad Apple dropped the ball on the MP.

He appears periodically to tell us how great pro things are planned. But we have just got one disappointment after another. Heck they have not even bothered to update the design of iPhone for 3 years. The rumors are that 7S of next year will retain same form factor.

But we have to blame ourselves for buying Apple products year after year.
I have switched to Hackintosh. It's miles better than any crap Apple has out there. Even Windows works just fine with added telemetry.

During a Q&A session at today's shareholder meeting held at Apple's Cupertino campus, Apple CEO Tim Cook reassured investors that Apple is still very much focused on its professional customers and has plans to "do more" in the pro area.

"You will see us do more in the pro area," Cook said. "The pro area is very important to us. The creative area is very important to us in particular."

Cook's comments were directed towards the Mac, Apple Watch, services, and iPad, but may reassure those who are worried that Apple is abandoning its desktop Mac lineup, especially the Mac Pro. The Mac Pro has not been updated since December of 2013, going more than 1,100 days without a refresh.

Other desktop Macs have also gone more than a year without an update. The iMac last saw a refresh in October of 2015, more than 500 days ago, while the Mac mini was last updated in October of 2014, over 860 days ago.

"Don't think something we've done or something that we're doing that isn't visible yet is a signal that our priorities are elsewhere," Cook also told investors.

There have been no hints that a Mac mini or Mac Pro refresh is on the horizon, but Apple is rumored to be planning to introduce new iMacs in 2017, perhaps as early as March. Future iMacs are expected to be updated with USB-C ports and AMD graphics chips.

At the meeting, Cook was also questioned about a potential convergence between the Mac and iPad lines, in the form of a touchscreen Mac. While Cook said he didn't want to comment on future product plans, he again reiterated that he sees the iPad and the Mac as two separate product lines that serve different purposes.

"Expect us to do more and more where people will view it as a laptop replacement, but not a Mac replacement - the Mac does so much more," he said. "To merge these worlds, you would lose the simplicity of one, and the power of the other."

Much of the rest of the shareholder meeting consisted of voting on several proposals and reiterating information that was previously shared during Apple's January earnings call. While no shareholder proposals passed - including those calling for increased diversity and more transparency about donations - Apple reelected its board of directors, approved board compensation, and approved Ernst and Young as the company's accounting firm.

Basically guys, there's no need to worry.

Yes a few products are pretty long overdue a spec bump, and the platter drives have long overstayed their welcome, but Apple are in a significantly stronger position now than they were in 2011 — and I don't just mean financially.

A new Mac Pro every year since 2011 would have paled in comparison to their current achievements with in-house chips and so many other things. It's not to say they couldn't have done both, of course! But it's sometimes good to take a step back and see the larger picture.

Rest assured, the new Mac Pro/Mac Mini will come; hopefully along with a more consistent silent hardware upgrade cycle! :)

How's that new job at Apple coming?

About 2 years to late Tim mate

A cool looking box with an apple logo on it
A cpu Xeon or intel 7
2-4 3.5" drive bays so you can have a quite built in raid
Removable ram
Standard graphics card

Are you getting it yet? This is not a soldered on £9,000 toaster machine, this is an MacPro

(Um Tim, it's been 4years, everyone has F off to windows)

. . . my new MBP crashes 50% of the time I unplug it from LG display. $4K of new hardware behaving like the junk of the PC/Microsoft Windows mess I left behind . . .
I browsed through some of this thread and I generally agree to the overall spirit myself. At home we (family and myself) still use Macs and iPhones. But for work I have switched to Windows 10, which I needed anyway and ran under Parallels in the past.

I can assure you that the Windows "junk" has changed to the better. My cheap ASUS notebook goes to sleep and wakes up reliably. I can plug and unplug external screens in the office (HDMI) and at home (miniDP) without any issues (and dongles). For work, I live in the different applications (MS Office, Matlab, Visual Studio, Lightroom) and hardly see a difference from the OS anyway.

OS X is still much more consistent than Windows 10, but this is not a big deal for me. The Mac hardware is probably also of better quality (as it should be for the price), but after 2 GPU burn outs (iMac27 and MBP15, both from 2011) last year I have mixed feelings about this, too. Last but not least, I enjoy being able to upgrade the SSD. This year I will give my money to Lenovo for a new Thinkpad. Money that I had put aside for a new MacBook, originally.
