that's not apple limiting you.. that's nvidia limiting you..
in this instance, it's nvidia making the proprietary software that is limited to run on only their proprietary GPUs then the software is licensed out to developers.

apple is certainly doing similar stuff but again, in this particular instance (CUDA), the finger pointing shouldn't be going to cupertino.

(or maybe i've just misinterpreted what your point was ?)
Thank you for your post.
As a film-video montage artist my workflow was an example, other people need different hardware to work with different software. My point is,the owner of a Pro machine which is a premium priced computer that is used for productivity beyond daily computer needs, wants freedom-unrestricted access to adjust his/her hardware and software needs in function with his/her work-vision.
This grotesque guy cook and his clueless advisors don't know how the creative industry-that once was the backbone of apple hardware and software works.

Just bought a Surface Pro - I've gone Windows only for the first time since 2004. You keep ****ing us over and over - the new prices are obscene and the spec's are just crap. Got a far more competent machine for £400 less than the entry MacBook.

Will see what the next 18 months brings but I won't hold my breath, Tim. It's clear you favour iOS and the fashion geeks.

I've got nothing personal against Tim Cook or anyone at Apple. I've still got an iPad Air 2 since 2014 working great, along with a mini 2 the wife has, 2 iphones between us and two apple watches with one Late 2013 MacBook Pro. Products have done the job. Problem is I've been given zero reason to upgrade my iPad since then. I tried the iPad Pro 12.9 inch and returned it after 2 weeks. Plain and simple, this pro moniker thing really is a joke when it comes to the iPad. What, a 12.9 inch screen with pencil support makes it Pro? Ok. But there needs to be more. My big thing is iOS NEEDS a version for the 12.9 inch screen to take advantage of the real estate. Seeing the space between those icons is just nuts. Its wasted space and its embarrassing.

The same iOS used on the iphone for the Pro? Come on. I don't see how there is any difference other than more space on the screen and the pencil which the 9.7 "Pro" now uses. The 12.9 was nice for certain things, but in the end I didn't feel like I was using a Pro device. That has to change. Making those things thinner just isn't cutting it anymore. And if the iphone can record 4k Video, why can't we have an iPad with higher resolution capable of 4K playback? I can almost see them keeping the same resolution on the iPads for at least a few more years but I'm hoping that will change.

So many other problems I won't get into right now, but in the end they really need to step up their game and give people reasons to upgrade again. Just my opinion.

Yes, and they are certainly making their point heard. By ranting about it in a forum which he likely doesn't frequent. While making the atmosphere so much worse for everyone else.

Clearly we here have made enough noise in our little "rants" that big time INVESTORS are grilling Tim on board calls as to why he is neglecting us. Let that sink in. Enjoy keeping your head in the sand while I vote with my wallet, err I meant voice.

One of those big time investors also asked if Apple could make a dumb-smart phone in the shape of a circle. Let that sink in.

On the plus side we only have to wait out this year.
If nothing pop's out of that pipeline in 2017 then TC will not be able to mention it again. It'll be BS and nobody will trust anything he says.
I still have a tiny thread of hope that Apple can pull something out of the bag / pipeline / roadmap.
They totally lost me as a customer last year, as an employee this year but I still have a teensy, tiny sliver of Apple lodged in my system.

Don't tell me show me. Pretty simple really. Or better yet, why don't you help us define what "Pro" means to Apple which will allow us to dictate if your definition fits in with what we think it is so we can make a better informed decision on if we want to stay with or move from.

Underspecced, overpriced, and aimed at people who need something only slightly more powerful than a MacBook Air.

I think it's safe to say, "now or never." Business people have to be able to rely on professional hardware and software, and see a path forward on the platform. You can only string them along so far, and then they're just gone.

If :apple: releases a similar form factor to my current 2013 MacPro with whatever components are cutting edge next in the market - I'll be a happy camper. I have a Thunderbolt SSD drive hooked up to my current machine and it's every bit as fast as the internal SSD. Externals are a great solution as far as I'm concerned.

I've run four monitors off it, two of them 4k, and it's like butter. I literally have no complaints about it in the three years i've been using it. As I said in the Mac Pro forum... when I need a new one to replace it (6 months to a year from now) I'll be seriously pissed if there isn't something for me to buy that uses external monitors. So hopefully that's what our boy Timmy is referring to.

As for my 12.9" iPad Pro - it's one of the best computer devices I've ever used. I don't see many of them and I use it for work - so I think it fits the 'Pro' label.

hmm.. yeah, i just sort of feel we're talking about different things.. (not necessarily just you and i.. it's many of the people i try communicating with at these forums in regards to computer hardware)..

like, i'm just trying to discuss the merits and/or faults of the machines we (assuming we're both working pros) choose to work with..

but 'grotesque timmy' and 'clueless other person' etc... ?? i just start feeling like you don't like some guy or some company first and foremost which then transfers down the line to not liking a product.. so the conversation ends up like this:

me: the current lineup offered by apple is completely fine -- sweet even -- for a vast majority of creative pros and their hardware needs.
others: you're wrong! tim sux!

as in- two different conversations guised as one.

I'm pretty sure that Tim means something like Apple TV Pro, Watch Pro, Emoji Pro, iPhone Pro. o_O

For me it doesn't matter anymore. I'm already done with it. A Lenovo beast (Thinkstation P910) is working under my desk. Leasing agreement for the Mac Pro (nMP) was running out and Apple hasn't something new... Still have a 2015 MBP and an iPhone, which isn't getting renewed at the end of the year.

Congratulations Tim! :p

Tim, we want big-ass towers to let macOS shine !
Lot of PCie slots and NVidia on the game again would be great :)
Your thunderbolt world is like a bad sci-fi movie ! More cables, more failures.

I've got nothing personal against Tim Cook or anyone at Apple.
Nobody has, personally. But professionally, he has betrayed his legendary corporate founder.
He killed off a computer company that was the finest of its kind. For what reason?
He found easier money elsewhere. While there was an overkill on resources, the biggest pile of money on the planet, insane budgets, loyal customers, a fine international distribution network.
So, he inherited the best position you could imagine to further develop.
But he killed it.
He killed off a belief, a religion for some people.
From a business perspective, he's the Judea of modern time IT.

People only need to buy a new computer once every 3-7 years. Most Macs sold are to the education sector or to first time buyers. If you have a Mac of some kind, there's no real valid reason to upgrade it as frequently as your phone. The hardware barely changes. Unlike other computer manufacturers, Apple have been fortunate to carve out new markets by selling smart phones & tablets. The iPhone is Apple's undisputed #1 product, so it makes sense that Apple are no longer a computer company, but a seller of 'lifestyle' products. It's the reason why Apple doesn't care about the Pro users anymore as there's no money to be made.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love nothing more than a wider range of Macs and its infuriating how slow Apple are to update them, but you have to realise that Apple are the iPhone company, not the computer company of yesteryear.

Actually, maybe Apple can hold a write in and LEARN what Pros want, and not let them assume what they believe Pros need.
