Actually the new bragi's for $119 aren't too bad either if you can do without the charging case

If I go to a field trip, 5 hours play back is too short. I still remember people mocking Samsung when they released their Bluetooth headphone.

Take a break... pop them in the charging case for 15 minutes... and you'll get a 3 hour charge.

You can stop listen to music for 15 minutes... can't you? :D

I gotta say, these caught my attention more than anything else so far. I'm a little disappointed at the 5 hours of battery life, but the battery case was a great idea.

EDIT: $159!? NOPE

That was basically my exact same reaction. It's not that I find the price unreasonable so much as I'd just never pay that much for headphones.

In my opinion, this was the coolest thing at the show. (And I was pleasantly surprised by the new phones.)

I actually don't mind the Apple-issued headphones. I think they are pretty comfortable. I usually use wireless ones (Jaybird for working out and Parrot Zika 3.0 when traveling or work) and think these would be good.

Question that I did not see an answer for. What is this W1 chip? Will this connect to my iPhone 6S and iPad Air 2, or only to the new iPhone 7s?

Yeah and? Ok. Pay hundreds for old tech? Or you can buy the 7 or 7 Plus and use the included Lightning to 3.5mm adapter and listen for the 40 hours as well with wires. Or listen for 24 hours with the AirPods and no wires? Or buy a Mophie Case...or Anker battery...etc. etc. etc. etc...blah blah blah...
"Old tech" I chuckled.

3 years ago I would've agreed. Not this time. We're at a point where the speed improvements are minimal from generation to generation, to a point where you wouldn't notice it at all in daily use. The A9 still kicks the asses of flagship phones from the Android camp to this day, a full year after its release. It's not "old tech". At all. It's perfectly capable of lasting 3+ years, easily.

I am surprised how backwards this community is. And I love my wired headphones
Wireless earbuds are the future for mobile. There is always the option of wired. Being able to have buds in, and use your phone/watch without worrying about compatibility sounds pretty awesome.
159$ is not a lot for headphones like this.
I for one am pretty excited to have a set of "real" headphones/buds for when I am listening to music and a set of portable ones that finally bring something to the table apart from disposability (not something I am a fan of)

The earphones won't fall out, they are the same build as the regular earbuds...which fit very snuggly in my ears...I understand that all ears are unique though and maybe you have little malformed baby ears or giant mutated ears...these fit really well for the ears in between...5 hours playback with the ability to power up for another 3 hours via 15 minutes in the charge case is VERY good...I have always loved the earbuds so will purchase these as soon as they are available...the price is quite reasonable in my opinion!
Not sure about this. With all the circuitry inside, they've got to weigh more than wired earbuds. And the stick hanging down from the ear has to have changed the physics of balance.

Still, you'd think Apple's armies of engineers would have figured this all out. They sure look good, IMO.

Are these backward compatible with older Apple Devices? Or do they lose some functionality with older devices...maybe no auto pairing? Will they pair with other devices like PCs? I wouldn't mind using these at my desk with my PC at work for work conference calls, etc.

I love all the battery criticisms. I wonder how many people are just complaining for the sake of complaining. I never use headphones for 5 hours straight... basically ever. (And if I do, I'm at my desk with something much bigger that covers my ears.)

Look at how small these things are. If you need more than 5 hours, this is not the product for you. Laughable? Given the size, I'm gonna have to say, no... pretty cool.

The stick hanging down is probably just for that....to give some directional weight to hold them in your ears similar to how the cord hanging down on earbuds helps hold them in.

Yes they are:
iPhone Models

You're post was spot on. I was impressed with the phones, but the AirPods actually excited me.

I've paid over $240 for high end headphones, but $159 for these wireless EarPods that are so easy to lose. Eh...it's not high fidelity sound, just convenience.

What? 5h is pretty impressive. The ones that Samsung released offer only 1,5h.

Yeah, but they'd always die when I'm out. But their case dragon was spot on. I'd never leave without the case, so the battery shouldn't be a huge deal.

Based on the comments and complaints I assume most people aren't familiar with the average price and battery life for this type of product is.

5 hours of battery life and $149-$159 or whatever it is, is actually very very good.

Samsungs versions cost $199 with 1.5-2 hours of battery life

Bragi Dash are $300 with 3 hours of battery life

And the reasons why the battery life sucks? They all have far more sensors measuring different metrics like motion, VO2 and continuous heart rate. All of which drain the battery rapidly. Oh and they also use Bluetooth making them compatible with ... well, mostly everything.

Apple had the chance here to design something equally small and unobtrusive just for music and push the tech forward. Instead they came up with the laziest design solution possible and offer the same battery life (or worse) than a cheap pair of Bluetooth earpods.

i totally agree... 5 hours is laughable. i will stick to my powerbeats 2 wireless...at least they get 6 hours. will wait for the airpods 2

The audio quality will be better on these, most likely. I'm looking at the powerbeats 3 now. It amazes me the difference between acceptable and "laughable", does everyone only speak in extremes now? They last longer than every competing product on the market.

Looks pretty sleek. If the sound quality is good, they might not even be expensive. A good set of wireless earbuds can easily cost $150-200 today.

I would have liked the charging cable to be built-in though, so you can charge it from the iPhone. We're living in the courageous wireless future! Why bring a cable with you?

Actually found this

  • AirPods require Apple devices running iOS 10, watchOS 3 or macOS Sierra.

on here:
http://www.apple.com/newsroom/2016/09/apple-reinvents-the-wireless-headphones-with-airpods.html

So looks like there's not really hope to use them with my PC. iOS10/Sierra must be necessary for the pairing and controls use.

How much do you think truly wireless headphones cost?

Bragi has the same price point for their low end.

These aren't the $22 bluetooth speakers on Amazon.

But then again, it's Apple earphones. Since when have they produced something of high quality?

I have the Powerbeats 2, and the sound quality is really great. Best wireless earbuds on the market (or they were when I bought them). People talk about the bass being too heavy on Beats, but it varies between products and on the PB2, it's heavy but not dominating. The bass is too weak on other earbuds though, so it's a compromise either way.

I suppose with increasing the price to $200 or $300 they could've added those extra sensors but if you have an iPhone or apple watch you already have them?

I have a pair of jaybirds where at full price have the same battery life

Not a huge fan of how far these stick out of the ear but they're better priced than what I was expecting from Apple.
