I knew this was going to happen...

Nope... as someone who lays in bed to read her iPad, likes to just lounge with the iPad, and especially uses it in landscape all the time unless forced by an app, nope to FaceID UNLESS it works much better than it does currently AND supports landscape.

I really don’t want to see a notch on the iPad. It’s my most used Apple device.

The X absolutely works in "landscape" mode. If you're laying down and the phone is sideways FID works fine. Your head just has to be alligned with the sensor. I'm trying hard and can't think of a usage case in which my phone needs to be unlocked from landscape when my head wouldn't also be in landscape :) Not saying there aren't any, just can't really come up with one on my own. Maybe map usage in landscape in a vehicle mount? I don't normally do landscape on maps though so that wouldn't effect me.

The 9.7 "cheap" iPad? That is going to be the latest to get it simply due to its cost (unless you're referring to the 9.7" Pro, but that's been discontinued).

Yes I was referring to the 9.7 iPad Pro, but if it is gone then I expect it to only be on the 10.5 and 12.9 iPad Pros.

I did a mockup :) I would LOVE this
I would also love you to demonstrate the location of front facing camera.
Similar to iphoneX, aesthetically pleasing but functionally underwhelming.

Yep, Jobs warned us in the video below, about the consequences for a company when the marketing people take over.
Now we have the notch
And because of that, iPad will have a notch, longer, maybe wider, and people will be brainwashed by markets team. They will rush and buy them, then complain the device on forum like this one. Apple will keep earning more money, but that’s it. It is no longer the best company in the world. The Apple people love is gone forever, alongside the lack of awesome product with spectacular design.

I reckon headphone jack will be removed on this one, which means I need to move quickly to secure a recent model before the headphone jack is gone. I rely on that to listen to all my music. 512GB here I come.

I would love if they added a second lightning port in lieu of the headphone jack (if they're going to remove it). Then you could get things like wired video out and USB audio. Just removing the jack would be a bigger step down for me on the iPad than on the iPhone.

I bet they won’t. iPad is not a pro device after all. Plus they can sell overpriced accessories more, just like current iPad.

Of all the Apple products that FaceID would make sense are the Macs. It would have been a much better experience compared to TouchID. I thought that TouchID on MacBook is a mistake. Apple need to gear up those new Macs with FaceID and stop using TouchID. Leave TouchID on iPhones and I hope they won’t abandon it. I’m still hoping they go back to the drawingboard and work on the in-display TouchID for next year’s release.

Here we go again......Apple has run out of innovation , so just produce a bigger version of the latest product . Apple has definelty lost there way after Steve”s passing
Just like that time when Steve was alive that they introduced the first iPad. It's like Steve is still with us!

I dont think there will be a "notch" on these 2018 ipad pros. Unlike the iphone X which is meant to be put in the pocket...the ipad isnt. So Apple can make them "almost" bezel-less. The smaller bezels can be practically non existant, yet still hide the new face id caneras without a "notch". Should look great. Too bad we'll have to wait until NEXT September. Knda bummed bout that. Wish it was Spring of 2018. Maybe it will be. Who knows.

A small bezel iPad? How are people supposed to hand hold it?

This. The only problems i've had with my iPad pro 10.5 replacing my Air 2- and they are very minor- are from the relative (compared to the Air 2) lack of bezel and resultant unintended screen touches.

Sadly it seems like the notch is here to stay, and a visual staple in the Apple name. It won't look as bad on the iPad though, it will have less visual weight.
No reason for the iPad to have a notch, the top bezel doesn’t need to be that small on a device that large. Maybe on an iPad mini but most think that form factor has been discontinued.

Off topic:

Personally, I hope they refresh the mini with an A11 next year, it could keep the current package of the mini 4 and be sold for another 3 years. Seems like a no brainer to me, but maybe the volume just isn’t there.

It is an important size for certain vertical uses, and some individuals prefer that size as well. And anyone who thinks an iPhone plus makes a 7.9” mini unnecessary has probably never seen them side by side. There’s really no comparison—the mini has more than twice the screen real estate (2.3x) and the 4:3 aspect ratio is just better in iPad-sized devices.

I never understood this. I have no problem holding the 10.5" or any ipad. I always rest it in my palms...wether holding it in landscape ot portrait mode. My fingers barely touch the edges, and i have big hands. Never once had a problem with accidently touching ipad screen. Even if Apple goes totally bezel-less for their new ipads, i wouldnt have a problem. But im sure if they do, they will come up with some sort of edge finger rejection technology like they already do with palm rejection. I dont know what the big worry is.

Would love to have one in the same sized chassis as my 10.5. FaceID would be AMAZING for kitchen and garage use. I really don't want to touch my devices with either types of oils on my hands!

Is it that much of a hassle to look at your phone right side up? That must be soooooo terrible for u!!!!

If it's mounted landscape on a tripod - yes!

Or if you have it landscape in a dock because you were watching video, paused it, came back and now need to pick it up and tilt it to unlock - yes.

Why would anyone buy an iPad anymore - so lame
I got an iPad Mini this year and love it. I still think a laptop is better for real work, and a phone is better for highly mobile, personal use -- but this fits that middle space between a laptop and a phone quite nicely. It's also a great "household" device too, to just have knocking around for whoever to use.

Maybe they 1) don't want to support multiple users beyond education (where FaceID won't be used on kids) 2) Will simply have you accept the lower security of having multiple recognized faces or 3) will require a passcode if you want multiple users

1 and 3 are atrocious options for usability.

This looks awesome (I know it's a render).

It's too bad iOS is, well...iOS. I cannot stand its limitations.

But Apple is getting there.

It needs (more than just) enough RAM, USB-C and maybe a microSD slot and I might be in.

Oh, and don't price-gouge us (unlikely).

Well, maybe an iPad is far from enough to use things like endnote, powersimulator. Play Steam games. Play Starcraft II. Use MATLAB with raspberry Pi support. Write python program. And much more.

Especially, when an iPad is as expensive as a computer but sadly do way less.

I cannot justify the need of iPad. It is best for consuming, but not producing, with some exceptions.

That is fair. Basically it is a larger iPhone for me with a larger battery. All the tasks I would do on my iPhone while on the go I do with my iPad at home. If I want to play games and write code, I grab the appropriate tool for the job which would be my MacBook or iMac. Correction: I would grab my PS4 Pro for games.

Ha! The price will be going up more if anything!

Ill be honest here... drop a 2018 12.9" iPad Pro cut down big time with little to no bezels and faceid, and I will sell my 10.5 immediately and buy it.
